I have a Mexican P-Bass and a Squire Vintage Modified PJ and if I had played them side by side I would have chosen the Squire because it feels better and actually sounded better than the Mexican stock, I got some Lollar pick ups for the Mexican and now it sounds a lot better but the Squire still feels like a better quality bass than thr actual Fender
Finally! A video that gets right to the point and offers a fairly equal comparison. -slightly newer strings notwithstanding… For me, it’s all about the interface. If a $400. bass felt and played better for ME and a $3,000. bass felt sticky and heavy, I wouldn’t waste the money on impressing a few people, that MIGHT see and/or hear a real difference.
Two things: First, great channel, how do you not have like 10x as many subscribers? Second, I'll be 100% honest. I compared both of these when shopping for a J. As far as playability, sound and quality goes, it's a dead heat. I grew up around Squier however, in my mind they have a stigma. I wanted a "real" Fender, I wanted that name on the headstock, I just couldn't get past that, as admittedly stupid as that is. It helped that I got a MiM Jazz for $300, in brand new condition, still will the tags on. Made it an easy choice.
Dude, I totally feel that. Even with how close these two are, I never take the Squier anywhere. It’s probably my least played bass these days. I recently put it in Eb tuning so it has a bit more utility. Thanks for the kind words! More great stuff to come!
For the vast majority of those settings, I literally could not hear much of a difference at all. That said, I know a lot is lost on computer speakers. Your observation about "feel" is really important though. Thanks for the video - super helpful to get this kind of comparison.
Digging your videos man! I was surprised with how similar they sound! I've always gone for MIM Fenders, but I've heard great things about the classic vibe Squiers
Thanks so much! I’ve always known the CV basses to be good, but I was really expecting the Fender to blow it out of the water. Couldn’t believe how close they were when I listened to them back to back.
I own a squier classic vibe '60 p-bass and a MIM Jazz bass (player series). Both are pretty equal in terme of built quality and I would even say I almost regret that I bought my Jazz bass because for it's price, I could almost have two classic vibe (jazz + precision). But anyway, they are both very good and keep great company to my Dimension US made !!
Cool video! Would have been nice to hear them both, while playing with music. To see how they sound in the mix. Way better than most comparison videos. I think the Fender was the better of the two. The squire looks better though lol!! Thanks man!
I had a 79 USA jazz back in the day. Recently purchased the Squire equivalent 27 years later and it has to be said it does feel pretty close to the original
Squier wins here, I just got this Squier Jazz Bass Classic Vibe 60 2010 Made in China for 150 us dollars, you cant find a Fender MIM for less than 350 now in days so go for 150 instead 350
I have a 2004 Mexican P-bass and a recently acquired Classic Vibe 70s P-Bass but before that I had a Vintage Modified PJ, both Squires actually feels better than the Mexican Fender. I put Lollar Pick Ups in the Fender and put the Fender Pick Ups in the Squire and now they are pretty much on par with each other as far as sound goes but the feel of the bass goes to the Squire.
I have a Squire 77 Vintage Modified and a Fender Geddy Lee Japan. There is a big difference in "feel, weight and build quality" with the Fender being in the lead. For the sake of argument and my poor memory, I believe the Geddy was about $1,000 and the Squire $500. With that said, I think they both have a unique, yet classic, tone. I haven't performed night after night on a stage in 15 years, so I couldn't say if the Squire would hold up under the workload but, it probably would. My #1 is a 1978, 4001 Rickenbacker. A different animal of course. I personally feel the Squire bass, especially the Vintage lines, are an amazing instrument for the money. Yes, for more money, you find better wood and better parts etc but still.
As someone looking to pick up the bass guitar, and with my heart set on a jazz bass, this video was extremely helpful. I was all set on getting the MIM, but now I'm leaning towards the Squier. The price difference here in Aus is about $400-$600 between the two, so I'm thinking I'll put that extra coin towards an amp or peddles or condoms for all the pu$$y I'm gonna slay. lol. Subscribed btw.
I had an early 90's MIM Jazz that was terrible...I've had my 74 MIA Jazz for decades but recently got 2 Squier Classic Vibes, one the P-Bass, and a Fretless Jazz as back-ups and they are light years better than that old MIM Jazz! Thing was new at a gig and the sound man walked right up and spoke into the microphonic pick-ups! (He then asked me if I had another bass, which I did luckily...Lol!!) It was unfinished and rough, and being that I'm from from San Diego I've got no problems with anything Mexican, but it was just plain trash and I couldn't get rid of it quick enough! Lol!! I've heard they got way better, but I still have that memory of buying it new, and not being happy...
Great video but just a little clue.. The views Scott gets has nothing to do with Silly Review Videos. Scott is an amazing educator and put together a phenomenal site for players of all generes and levels. That is the reason his videos are watched and liked so much.. But I do throw a huge Shout to u to bud cause this video is great and put together awesome too.. Thanx
I really prefer the Squire tone. I own a Fender Player series Jazz bass and I think i'm going to sell it and get the Squire! Kills it for my taste. Thank you for the comparison.
The Fender sounds more balanced, consistent and growly, even eith the older strings. The Squier crackles every time you turn the pots which isn't pleasant but it does look nice though!
To put the money into the squier to make it as good as the mim, you might as well buy a used mim...to make the mim as good as a mia fender, you might as well buy a used mia
Nice! Almost sounds like the Squier has a bit of a scoop on it. I wonder if they use different tone cap values? The tone knob on the Squier sounds like it might be taking more highs out than the Fender.
The tone knobs are distinctly different. I kinda got the feeling that the Fender retained more of its character when rolled off where the Squier became very dull.
@@ampthebassplayer exactly the fender sounds a lot brighter if you listen to it on a proper headphone. all these comments like "is the fender twice as good" are totally dumb tho. of course it's not twice as good, however there is a good chance for that it will be a usable instrument for twice as long because somewhere they need to save that money. fretboard wood quality and material is far less limited on this price range. even if they used alder for the SQ does really anyone believe that they are as well selected as for a fender? also tuners, bridge, pickups and mostly frets! Quality Check is not that serioius either...I have a MIM and I'm just considering a second one, no regrets at all. my first bass was a squier I loved that, used it for 7 years but I would always go for the fender. but that's just me. great videos tho!
To Me The Squier Had More Presence & Variety Than The Player: The Player Sounded Like "A Hired Sideman" (Darryl Jones - Rolling Stones) As Opposed To The Squier Sounding Like "Original Band Member, Contributing Songwriter" (Roger Waters - Pink Floyd), If That Makes Sense ...🤔 I've Been Driving Myself Crazy Looking For A Jazz Bass This Year (Late Christmas Gift) From Vintera To Squier Classic Vibe. I Guess I'll Have To Try A Player Out In Person To See If It's Worth The Extra Dough!💰💰💵💵💵
For me the “coyote” sounds a bit fuller, little more sustain, with more over all range. The squier is not bad, little bit “skinny”. If this were boxers the squier were a middle weight and the mex a light heavy.
Honestly there isn't a big difference, I have a SQ VM 77, and a fender standard (jazz) the SQ is great, but it doesn't hold the "full valor", if you're very tight budget go SQ VM or CV, no question, if you have a few more bucks, go fender MIM it will get you more bucks if and went you resell!!!!!!
Since you made this video (maybe before in my market) prices have gone way up. New prices are now $489 (CV) vs $849 (MIM) and you won’t hardly find a used MIM for under $600. It doesn’t seem all that long ago to me that a new MIM bass was $350. I’ve always wanted an American Standard (or Professional they call it now), but they jumped $200 this year to $1800. My rationale for choosing a MIM over Squier is that upgrading hardware or changing the pickguard to American isn’t just a drop-in replacement on the Squier - or at least not with the stratocasters. You have to modify things quite a bit and then you can’t go back when you can’t sell them for the value you’ve added. A squier resale or trade value doesn’t increase with upgrades.
How are you gonna go through effort of putting together a shootout video like this and not go just a bit extra to get both basses a fresh set of strings? Never change, bassists.
Should have loaded both with new strings of the same kind, which failed the comparison. This is always an issue with bass comparisons, no point as strings make a huge difference to the sound when worn in or new, or different types. I wish bass players would do a proper comparison so that people can make a good sound decision. Thanks anyways
Which of these basses do you prefer? Is the extra cost worth upgrading to the Fender?
Squier sounds better. Tortoose always sounds better 😜
I have a Mexican P-Bass and a Squire Vintage Modified PJ and if I had played them side by side I would have chosen the Squire because it feels better and actually sounded better than the Mexican stock, I got some Lollar pick ups for the Mexican and now it sounds a lot better but the Squire still feels like a better quality bass than thr actual Fender
instablaster.
Squier stole the show for me.. it has more character and punch.
Definitely the Fender. I love an underdog but the Squier falls short against it
Finally!

I have that classic vibe jazz with Duncan Quarter Pounders and all new electronics and it sounds 👌, but it also feels good in the hands
I saw your message at 8:13. Don't worry, it happens! Good video! Thanks!
Cool video! Would have been nice to hear them both, while playing with music. To see how they sound in the mix. Way better than most comparison videos. I think the Fender was the better of the two. The squire looks better though lol!! Thanks man!
Thanks! I appreciate the feedback. I’ll see if I can get some backing tracks to incorporate into the next one.

Great looking and well edited video dude!
subbed just because of the poke at Scotts bass lessons lol. Seriously though great video I'm looking at buying a CV right now.

Lmao
LoL
hilarious ahhhh
I genuinely prefer the squier sound
I know, i'm stupid, Squier logo kills me, i can't handle it xD very nice video dude!!

Squier cv jazz bass - £339, Fender MIM jazz bass - £649, is the Fender twice as good ?

Both sound the same. I would be satisfied with the squier!

You can definitely hear the fresher strings on the squier. Not really a balanced comparison for that reason.

I like both basses a lot. It would have been fun to compare the Squier and MIM basses to an MIJ and/or MIA instrument.
Skipped to the playing and wasn't sure which was which for second. Surprised by the tone of that Squier lol
Awesome video!
Glad you enjoyed it!

Nice Video, Fender for the win!
I think they're different but I don't think one is better that the other, probably the squire with some upgrades could sound way better
The MIM is better than the Squier.
There's a difference but i'd probably just get the Squier Classic Vibe 70s
I love the sound of the Squier. But I cannot get over the glossy neck :(
The Mexican sounded better to me
it's very simple: we are comparing two kind of different pickups....well, I prefer the second one
1:56 why do I feel like I've heard this before
It's a pretty famous bassline. Usually it's played on a synth though.
"chameleon" by Herbie Hancock.
Hello there, is standard the MIM bass?
to me the fender pups sound fatter all over
🎶 She's a bad mama jama 🎶
Honestly I couldn't hear much difference
How are you gonna go through effort of putting together a shootout video like this and not go just a bit extra to get both basses a fresh set of strings? Never change, bassists.
I was unemployed at the time. My broke ass could afford $50 for a video that potentially wouldn’t make any of that back.
The squier sounds better 😂😂😂
