Nice review! Although can I suggest: in the tone comparisons, show a given setting for one bass then the same for the next bass, before moving onto the next setting; this will allow us to hear the comparative differences side by side. Having all the tone clips for one bass grouped together followed by those for the second doesn’t easily allow for such a comparison. Thanks!
Most important in this video to comparison: 70's: 4:11 60's: 5:56 70's Neck: 4:46 60's Neck: 6:31 My choice is a 60's, great tone with punch! 70's more muffled.
You do not discuss the most important difference between the two, and the most likely reason for tone differences. The 70s jazz has a bridge pickup closer to the bridge, which is period correct. This makes a big difference in the bridge pickup tone and is the reason why they were a hit. They have a bigger spank and growl than the traditional position (which is what modern jazz basses have returned to).
Excellent point - and great excuse to the Mrs why I have SJB75 from SX with maple fingerboard v J & D 70s bass and a CV 60s in Daphne Blue. What I am finding is the 70s bridge pickup is quieter (less oscillation there) - and the stock pickups on CVs 60s are too hot for my env - way too much noise so some EMGs are on the way. This demo makes them sound better. Making some videos on my channel.for this. I rewired pickups with twisted pair wires. Made it quieter but still way too noisy.
practically the sound difference between two basses comes from the distance between the bridge pickups and the bridge itself only...also because they have the same pickups...
Jeff, please tell me on which guitar the distance between the bridge and the pickup is more standard and universal. that is, on Fender American professional jazz bass guitars or Fender player jazz bass is the same as 60' or 70' ? I want to have the sound most suitable for the RHCP group, which is better for me 60' or 70'. THANK YOU
Definitely the 60s for me. I have both, I definitely prefer the 60s. Now if Squier just offered a 60s reissue with stack knobs...that would be the overall winner. I had to convert mine, but it was totally worth it.
Just tested both today at my local music store and went with the 70s because it just kinda felt better to me. The 60s neck felt a bit thicker which I did not like as much. Also in this video, the 60s does sound a little better but in the store the 70s sounded better to me. Before I tested them I was quite sure I would go with the 60s just from watching UA-cam. You should really go play and see which one speaks to you in the end :)
Totally agree with your sentiment of trying it out for yourself. I love making the videos, but it really is up to how it feels and sounds in person. Thanks for watching
I'm actually a P-bass fan, but really enjoyed this jazz shootout. I would go 60's. Btw, I'd love to see a review on that stock Bronco! I talked myself into buying a budget short scale so I would appreciate your thoughts on that bass. Thanks in advance & keep up the good work!
Both basses are awesome. I personally have the classic vibe 60s and love it dearly but i can't disagree with the 70s winning and might have to own Both
hello, awesome review!!!! if I may ask a question, is there anything that can be done to give a more "round tone" like you said, to a Poplar body Bass??
The Sire V3 is a similar price point to these basses, and the Sire V3 potentially represent better value due to the onboard active EQ and sensational neck/rounded fretboard. Great question and thanks for watching!
How would you compare either of the classic vibes to the Affinity jazz basses? I was really interested in the 60s cv because Flea uses a 61 Fender Jazz, so I assumed the closest I could get on a budget is the cv 60. But if the Affinity is just as good at half the price then idk.
Hi Connor thanks for watching! The Affinity series are a good bass but are a big step down from the Classic Vibe series. If you’re just starting out the Affinity is good, but if you’re looking to stick to the bass longer term I would get the CV. I hope that helps a little!
@@91cog cheers mate. I normally get overly excited and spend a bunch of money on a new hobby and flake out a month or two later. But it's been 3 months now and I'm still as eager to continue and practicing everyday. So yeah, I think I'll go with the classic vibe series. Even though in Aus they've gotten a price hike over the last few months, I better get it before inflation drives it up again.
I’d like to chime in here if your still considering getting a classic vibe, but you still haven’t. Just get yourself a Sire Marcus Miller V3. And if the shipping costs workout for your country, maybe go for a Sire Marcus Miller V7 off of Thomann music’s website. The quality and specs of the Sire basses is far better than what you’d get from squier in the price point of the classic vibes. If you did end up purchasing it though, maybe consider adding a sire Marcus Miller (jazz bass) to your collection, they are great instruments (especially for the price)
the 70s bass only has maple for the natural look unfortunately. i wwouldve loved if i could get it in sunburst for the looks but idk now. for me the quier 60s is a little cheaper
This goes into my TC Electronic BAM200 into my audio interface. It’s a class D amplifier, there is no digital emulator from my understanding. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for sharing, Jeff! I definitely have missed discussing that in the video and agree that it has a big impact on tone

Oh yes please, I love stacked dials! Would totally be a fan of that. Thanks for watching
Check out the paranormal jazz, just what you’re looking for
The 60s just do it more for me! A smoother sound but still with lots of punch. Great video as always mate 👍
Your 60's CV with that cream pickguard is just... gorgeous 🤤
Thanks Jonny! I truly love your 60’s Bass with the ivory pickguard, it changes the whole vibe and I’m loving it!
Cheers mate...I purchased the 70s CV partly as a result of your video 🙂
I'm a 60's jazz bass lover and this video confirms my love for 60s characteristics!!!!
What a superb detailed review and those tone settings for each bass was really useful in helping to decide should you be considering buying one.

Thank you Bert! I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Bronco unbox and review coming soon - didn’t realise it was a bit of a teaser! Thanks for watching
Thx! Im going with the CV 70's.
Thanks for watching and enjoy the CV70 my friend!
Great comparison!Thank you for your video ❤
Just bought a CV 70s Jazz bass today. Mine is the black one.
Played the both, 60s stands out for me for sure.
I like the deeper tones of the 70's J bass that coupled with my preference of maple fretboards makes it my choice hands down
It truly is an awesome bass. Great choice and thanks for watching!
Awesome video man! I’m going with the 60’s
Rock on Tom! Thanks for watching
Fantastic review
Of course the 70's 🔥
It’s a seriously cool bass! Thanks for watching
Ohh theres something about that 60s one you know. I have a natural finish VM 70s jazz but man that 60s is doing it for me
They’re definitely worth trying! I quite like it, especially for those longer gigs. Thanks for watching Shaun!
Both basses are awesome. I personally have the classic vibe 60s and love it dearly but i can't disagree with the 70s winning and might have to own Both
Squier Classic Vibe 70s Jazz Bass hands down And I have a Squier Classic Vibe 70s Jazz Bass Sunburst in my Bass Guitar Collection 🎸 🎶 😎
hello, awesome review!!!! if I may ask a question, is there anything that can be done to give a more "round tone" like you said, to a Poplar body Bass??
I like 60s for fretted and 70s fretless, without markers :)
70
finger 4:12
pick 4:20
60
finger 5:56
pick 6:05
Thanks Luigi!
70s
Nice looking basses
When talk about 70s Jazz Bass Marcus Miller sound definitely comes to mind
Buzzy strings on the 60s ? Maybe its the setup?
CV 60s all the way!
Thanks for watching and rock on!
I liked the 60's tone more. and you left out the biggest reason for tone change, bridge pickup placement change.
How would you compare the Squier jazz basses to Sire jazz basses (V3 or V7)?
The Sire V3 is a similar price point to these basses, and the Sire V3 potentially represent better value due to the onboard active EQ and sensational neck/rounded fretboard. Great question and thanks for watching!
I think they sound almost the same, but 70s is slightly more jazzy and 60s got more of a rock bass sound if it makes sense 😁
How would you compare either of the classic vibes to the Affinity jazz basses?

I too love the late 50s, early 60s P basses, but I want a J bass. The 60s J bass does it for me
Nice one! Thanks for watching David
play the 70s between neck and neck pickup and you have a kyuss ricknbacker sound
the 70s bass only has maple for the natural look unfortunately. i wwouldve loved if i could get it in sunburst for the looks but idk now. for me the quier 60s is a little cheaper
Is it myth or not that bass who has maple fretboard don’t too blend with the drum kick bass?
Myth for sure. Tone woods aren't a thing on electric instruments
@@lit_wick ahh okay thanks
I was kind of hoping this was a set up for a pun! Thanks for watching
Are the necks identical?
Other than the fretboard, inlays and logo styling, they are identical! Thanks for watching
amigo un día podrías hacer un Sire v5 vs Squier Classic Vibe 70 !!!
Thank you for watching amigo!
Tnx a lot
Where can you get em for that price mate?
Keep your eyes out for those sale prices! Thanks for watching
What amp are you running this into? It sounds like there’s some valve emulation going on?
This goes into my TC Electronic BAM200 into my audio interface. It’s a class D amplifier, there is no digital emulator from my understanding. Thanks for watching!
God damn I watch this video countless times I still can't decide between the two
Go with your heart! Thanks for watching
@@91cog after 3 weeks
I finally decided to get the CV60
anyways man thank you for the video
60s Jazz bass all day long on sound man! 🤷
Il 60s è il più fedele!!! Comunque il peso è di 4kg esatti. Io lo possiedo
grazie per aver guardato il mio video!
60's but with block inlays. Dot inlays suck.
No slap…
Fck they are cheap in Aus! 999 in NZ!
That was the most common price at the time of filming! They’ve definitely gone up since. Thanks for watching
I bought one anyway. Amazing tone and sustain on this bass. Love it.
Now, compare those to the Harley Benton JB75. $135. Sorry.
I wish we got Harley Benton in Australia, would be so keen to check it out! Thanks for watching
Bindings & inlays? That’s paint nit wit.
Ah well close enough! Thanks for watching
