  • In Part 3, Alan talks about why he worked full time for several years before taking the plunge to bet full time, can a young person be taught a lifetime's worth of experience in order to fast track them to professional betting, can lumping on short ones be a profitable strategy long term and is there anyone he'd back a tip from?

I first met Alan Potts paddock-side at Wincanton Races in the 90's. He was interested in how I bet. I said I looked at the Timeform race card and backed the one in the two top rated I thought was (what I called) "value". He explained why I might consider backing other horses - even a 33/1 shot if I believed it better than a 3% chance. I didn't know who he was at that time, but Alan changed my life. I bought the Timeform Perspective, studied each race, worked out a 100% book and backed anything I could get a higher price than in my book (with a small margin for error). Made a loss the first year, but once I understood things like pace in the race, trainers in and out of form etc... I soon made an overall profit and gave up work to bet "professionally" many years ago. tbh I am just a very small bettor compared to Alan and I don't make as much money as I did when "working": But it is a great life. Thanks Alan.

To Alan's point about the shops in the 90s. I worked in some of Ladbroke best shops (West end of London) during the 90s as a student and I can only remember knocking back a bet once in that period. Nlow a bet of£50 can often get ring up

Ben is not going to like Alan saying dont back the favourite when Ben is all over X with his mate Blogger having his nuts on favourites with StarSports

Is it harder to select winners when you are under pressure / stress ?

Pressure and stress makes you think differently and more carefully and can kill your confidence fast, if you are feeling stress from losing then you are simply staking too much

He said it there, small profit, thank god he has a pension. there is only one way to win and it is not having win bets. you need the odds in your favour.
