Something happens to the sound at 0:54
I couldn't believe that the sound got screwed up at some point. I mean COMPLETELY different. Like there was a 1/4 to 1/2 second delay somewhere. At first I thought it was the Gemini having a head basket resonance problem, but then he switched to the U87 and it had the same issue. Definitely something wrong with the recording or the UA-cam conversion or something. But really hard to assess these clips with that sound issue. I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned this. I think you are the second one to do so. Weird. Maybe the video got corrupt after some time and it's messed up now?
I love how this guy goes into falsetto so smoothly. It's kinda funny and good at the same time.

You can do this all day with most mics against the U87 and what I have consistently noted is the "completeness" of the U87 in a way that others have not matched up.
It is full, it is smooth it has that bottom end when it senses that bottom end, it has those mids and highs etc etc etc .. It is frigging COMPLETE and NATURAL SOUNDING!

I'm undecided between SE gemini II and Warm audio wa 8000. I can't find any comparison between these two microphones. Does anyone have an opinion about the two?
Neumann suits your voice a bit better I think. But Neumann isn't always the best choice, that's for sure. Very nice voice by the way!

I think the Gemini has a brighter high end than the Neumann. In my opinion, it´s better to remove augmented high end with a steady EQ, rather than adding some high, which also bring a background hizz with it. In the low end they´re both amazing. But the Gemini definitely wins for me.
Both mics sound great, but in my opinion, the U87 sounds a little bit warmer. The Gemini II is too bright for my liking. I keep the Neumann. Thanks for sharing.
Gemini doesn't seem to have the same clear top end. A switch to a brighter preamp may work? But theres a low mid bump thats annoying me.
thats because the second tube inside of it allows it to intake more high end than u87 thus having way way way more but i just roll it off
I love the Gemini, it's just brighter and with that, more balanced. Can you do a comparison between a Neumann U89 and a Audio Technica AT4060? Would be awesome!

Did you do any EQing?? If not, then im confused. When I run my Neumann raw through my interface, it sounds muddy and dark, but when I see these demo vids for the Neumann, it always sound energetic, clear and bright. Im kind of a newb, so what am I missing??

You have to do some magic touches to with eq and compression, and don’t forget the place where you record plays a big role in how your mic sounds
Recording space is number 1, then the mic and (pre amp converters*adda) then proximity your singer is to the mic. The u87 is very sensitive but relatively flat. Meaning you can do pretty much anything with the signal sp it works on almost anyone in the right engineer's hands. You are hearing the u87 almost every day as pretty much every animated feature and film and the vast majority of songs you are watching/listening to will be recorded with a u87ai for the reason of its flexibility and quality. The top end is only slightly pushed by 2-3 db but can be pushed and pulled to sound like whatever you want. You dont need more than 1 eq to shape it. Record something and experiment eg 48 @24bit. Play with different versions of eq and listen.

I downloaded the sound and used SoundForge to see Spectrum Analysis Chart. The spectrum graph displays the amplitude (in dB) of each frequency component. Frequency is displayed along the X (horizontal) axis, and amplitude is displayed along the Y (vertical) axis. I am not a sound engineer or any kind of a sound pro. But I could see that SE produced 3-4 fewer dB of amplitude (loudness) in frequency range from 20 to 1000kHz and vice versa 3-4 more dB of amplitude in frequency range of 6800-9800kHz. That might be the reason of subtle sound differences in two samples. But, I had a similar test made myself in a studio with SE Electronics Gemini II and Neumann U89i - and the results were the opposite. Which brings to mind possible modifications to sound made for this video (like added reverberation mentioned before) - different parameters for normalization/compressor. Anyway, my personal opinion - take Gemini II, use EQ you want and you'll have a colorful sound of Neumann with rich detailing of Gemini.
I agree. That was the first thing I noticed unitil the sound file went bad like he was singing into the back of the mic or something. The Neuman was "Warmer" (to me that means more low/mid) and with his voice that was a nice thing. That is a hard thing to compare as the mics actually would have to occupy the exact same space at the same time in order to know. Proximity effect alters low/mid dramatically with cardiod mics.
You mentioned comparing it to a U89(i) in studio and found the opposite issue. It could have been due to the same issue or the simple fact that a U89(i) and a U87 are vastly different microphones. Neuman's have a sonic signiture as do many other brands but their mics are never the same nor should they be model to model.

GEMINI II каеф. Нереально приятные верха. Банально конечно, сибилянты могут полезть, но в данном случае ласкает слух.
The U87 sounds classic...like a classic record from the '70s...It evokes Cat Stevens or Simon & Garfunkel when you hear it. The Gemini sounds clearer, and has the boosted top-end...but it doesn't quite "take you to a different place" like the 87 does. I dig the 87...and I dig this guys voice and the song.

the neumann makes you sound better than you should lol but the gemini bring out the way you really sound depends on what you want but the neumann is definitely smoother and a bit warmer
The U87 walked it - smoother and better in the top end - the gemini was a little brittle in the highs and just lacked that understated fullness of the u87.
The SE is more natural sounding...like it hasn't been affected by age. The Low end is a bit more "real" and focused. The upper mids with a touch of 12kHz would be virtually identical. It's also half the price of a vintage U87 and comes with a warranty. No brainer. People forget that mics don't always get better with age. They require tech work to keep in working order which be expensive, plus mics get duller with wear and tear and age. I'm listening on PSI monitors...these are not so different that it warrants spending on the vintage unit.
Your opinion of course. I think the overal timbre of the Neumann is pleasant. It has body and sounds classy. The SE sounds bland and has an unpleasant sharp top end. It sounds like any other Chinese made mic. Any MXL for $100 plays in the same ball park..Cary Miller
+RockmannMusic your opinion of course......but in my opinion the best mic is the most natural sounding one....the bottom came out more clear on the SE.....the neumann has famous recordings under its belt so it has hype that people buy into...its an old design. not as clean..... its definitely subjective. cuz the bottom of the U87 did not sound all there. and comparing the SE to mxl is delusional.....which also tells me you dont know much. to me it was the better fit for the guys voice in this recording because it can actually capture the lower end....which is important.
+RockmannMusic ill give you that the u87 does sound better from the upper mid-range and up.....it would be a superior choice for female voices.

The U just sonunds better. In fact, I think the TLM 103 sounds better the the Gemini II. Ther are other good tube mics that will outperform the Gemini II, as well. Thanks for the viewing.

***** the u87 to me is highly over rated the gemini has a input and a output tube i just cant see a condenser ever beating a tube mic let alone a tube mic with 2 tubes in overall quality or once its mixed but there both amazing

87 all the way. just use a little bit of EQ. GII is too harsh and something going wrong on mids.
Both are great. BUT>
Gemini has a problem with sibilants. Neumann has its own saturation and is more present than the gemini.
I have both currently in my studio (the gemini I own) and neumann is just better for lead sounds.
The problem with this review is the reverb. Dudes, why would you use reverb on a test like this? WTF?
U87 sounds better on these vocals, it just has that smooth, silky top end. The SE has a bit to much top end sizzle for my taste. I think the SE is a good mic, should work great on overheads, strings, piano, AC guitar, and probably some vocals, just not liking it here, compared to the U87.
just think..if he'd written the song he could have afforded both microphones and a decent hat..oh well.
I have had a Gemini for about 12-13 years now and recorded many albums with it,, I got it when they first released it. the sound has a sharp top end so you have to do a little roll off to make it usable, which can be a hassle! I like to just record flat, but thats a little hard with this mic compared to the U87, and as for the build quality, well the finish is not like the U87 the Gemini has a little less care taken with the details like the threads are not smooth which means you have to be carful when you screw it on to the suspension. The price compared to and U87 is great but my thoughts 13 years down the line is that if I’m going to have a mac with me for the rest of my life, which this is, then price is not really the main issue. If I were to buy another mic again it would be the U87.
yeah i understand but i also have owned a gemini for 8 years and recorded many songs and couple of albums, i like knowing that i have alot of high end information instead of adding it later like the u87, plus gemini more fatter and full, which works wonders in hip hop vocals, and the warmness is incredible

don't know how much the Gemini cost but, I'd go with the Gemini! the neumann is just crazy expensive! I didn't hear enough difference to Warrant the huge difference in price!.....
