  • In this video I discuss how to keep solo your moto camping site clean of food and smells that could attract bears making the camping experience as safe as possible. I use a Ursack to safely store and secure my food from bears which I will explain.

    Good advice. I too have witnessed sloppy campers with bad culinary habits leave themselves in dangerous overnight conditions. I always carry 50ft of para cord to hoist all my food and sundries up on a high branch at least 6ft out from the tree’s trunk. Been camping in bear country off and on for over 40 years and this has always worked well.
    Appreciate your comments on carrying firearms on bike trips. I feel the same. I never head to the woods without bear spray, however. It stays in my tent with me too.

      Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated. I hesitated a little leaving in the firearms bit because I know how divisive it can be.

      @@advmatt Yeah, it’s a hot button for sure. People can be uncompromising zealous either way. I’m an owner too, so I understand both sides but feel as you do about bringing one on a trip. I prefer to heighten my situational awareness and avoid potentially compromising situations on my adventure trips.

    I grew up in alaska. generally the same precautions apply. clean it. bury it. keep it away from camp. its a habit that stays with me in the lower 48. if the weather is shit, I'll either eat a cold meal or make a separate meal stop in a sheltered spot before pitching actual camp somewhere else. IMO guns just cause more troubles than they solve. on a motorcycle its pretty much the same for bear spray. having one get broken in a pannier absolutely sucks.

    Great advice and tips Matt, it would be interesting to have bells on the food bag to hear if something is pulling on it, or a trail cam facing the camp at night. I have been thinking of doing the cam since I have one laying around, or maybe better off not knowing. Bear spray is cheap insurance that I will carry, but honestly, I've only seen one black bear and he wanted nothing to do with me.

      The few bears I have seen have been leaving the area quickly. They can be curious though. Glad you liked the video.

    Pancakes??? now that's living. Yet another item I need to find room for on my trip next week to do the Utah BDR! Like you, I take these types of trips by myself. Oh, I just got the mini pump you reviewed on a previous video. I can't believe how tiny it is and powerful. I've so glad you are putting together these videos, really helpful Matt! Maybe you can do a piece on foods you take. I'm finding that with limited space on my bike, food items need to be compact, need no refrigeration and must be tasty!

      Thanks for the feedback. I keep experimenting with food and really havent found anything that I really love, but I will give it some thought. I have a few ideas. Enjoy the Utah BDR, what a trip.

    What about dehydrated meals? Do they have smells would you have to do the same thing with them? Still in the package of course.

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  2 роки тому +2

      I put away all food, regardless of packaging, an unopened package could have food smell from food it was carried with, and I have seen dehydrated packages split open or rub open in luggage, just safer to put away.

    I believe that would be pronounced 'er' sack as in Ursus (bear genus).

    I do a bit of camping in the Louisiana bayous. Any advice about alligators?
    Great fun, thanks.

      I can't find the bar risers I used on Amazon, but I leaving a link here to Aliexpress that has some bar risers. They are little taller than the ones I used so you might need to move your clutch lever in a bit more. www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002107606396.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.70ee415fuMIwM7&algo_pvid=ebf2f672-6e3f-43b0-aba3-cb6c0a9f54eb&algo_exp_id=ebf2f672-6e3f-43b0-aba3-cb6c0a9f54eb-1
