  • In this video, I show you how I stay safe from bears when motocamping. There are only two firm rules, both of which regard food. Millions of people sleep outdoors in bear territory every year, and there is no reason to have a lot of fear about it. Let's look at the statistics and see how to minimize the risk. Bears are just one more risk of getting out of bed. #motocamping #motorcycletouring

The still photos are mine. The videos of bears are stock footage except for where I pull over on the Alaska Highway to look at a black bear at the side of the road. The thumbnail is PhotoShopped, obviously. No close calls for me. That's the whole point of the video.

After spending over 30 years exploring the back country of northern usa and canada I've only ran into bears and seen em run away faster than I could get even worried. However, last year, northern idaho lake, on my bike I park at a lake and walk across a short sandy beach arear and hear a noise, turn around and there is a huge female moose. Its already stumping her feet and snorting at me, then within a couple of seconds she's chasing me around a large fir tree, I carry a smaller size pepper spray, like the ones police use and from 5 feet away i finally had to let her have some of it. We all get complacent the more we are out there, but the more we do, sooner or later a too close for comfort meeting will happen. Be prepared for sure.

I lived right in front of Pisgah National Forest and spent more time out than in my house. So I've seen hundreds of black bears met them on the trail almost always closer than recommend. Ive even had my tent pounced twice but I regard black bears like big dogs. 99% of the time if they see you first they run.
I've even ,over the years would get close to a family and go out looking for them. fourty year ago you didn't have to they we're everywhere but as people moved in and killed or chased them out now you almost have to know where to look.
like everyother animal that can kill you the media has demonized them and people move to these wild places and then deside they don't like the locals. It's a shame. Oh and stop eating all their blueberries!

Couple of things. A bear attack doesn't have to be fatal to be serious. Bear spray is pretty much useless if the wind is blowing and using it inside a tent isn't going to turn out well.

Good points. I don't know how to gather statistics on bear attacks. They are probably available for specific locations. Yosemite reports some kind of contact almost every day. But the point of the video is that the most dangerous part of the trip is while riding the bike, if we follow the rules for food, camping is safe.

Same rules apply to backpacking and other types of camping. Keep your camp clean, and keep the food and smelly items stored away from your sleeping spot.

That's not so reassuring. You're more likely to die riding than getting attacked by a bear. 😬 Thanks for the safety tips.

So.... get the Schwarzenegger gun scabbard for the bike and keep it close... 454 Casull in a shoulder holster might be good as well...bears are no joke, on their turf carry a small stick and be prepared to outrun your friend,...
