@@plutorootswoodworking I consider that very high praise. I 1st stumbled upon Jon when I was trying to figure out how to setup my small shop. I had downsized from a bit larger garage and was wondering how I would fit all the larger tools in the much smaller space. Not only was his video super helpful but I was so relieved to have someone with a comedic presence sharing the information. I immediately benjed everything he had to watch and now sit patiently waiting for the next gem he drops. Great guy. And completely blown away that he took time to endorse this channel.

@@plutorootswoodworking I was pretty close to where you were at man. I have a soon to be 3 year old and work a full time job with a 2.5 hour round trip commute so I didn't know how I possibly could make videos and still be there for my family and day job. Jon is actually a person that made me think, hey this guy has a job, he's got twins, he's over 30! If he can make it work maybe I can to. My workflow could probably be a WHOLE video. Maybe someday I could share it if the community was interested. But yeah man. I only do this because I have the support of my wife and I can still male time to be present as a dad. Quick note on the Ridgid shop vac. I bought the 6 gallon one initially but it was useless and had no sucking power for even the smallest things. I returned it and got the 12 gallon one which has been awesome. I use it to clean the car too.

What I've learned in my woodworking journey is to buy a tool WHEN I need it. Not just because it's on sale. Also when it come to router bit and the like, never ever buy a SET. Buy the nit you need at the time you need it.

Good advice Marcus! I've heard others use this technique as well. I live in a somewhat Rural area so the smaller consumable items I tend to stock up on just because I don't want them to delay a project but for bigger tools. You're absolutely right. "Wait until you need it" is a sound strategy. Thanks for sharing! 🙏

@@JasonGrissom No special mods. I've got a big Craftsman vac I've had for 25+ years and a smaller Rigid with a bag I've had for only about 8. The only thing I wish I had for either was better filtering. And I keep thinking about adding a chip separator, but haven't gotten around to it. On the plane front, luckily they are pretty rare in my area, so not overly tempting. Still wish I had one good one though. Cheers!

The ridgid shop vacs are great if you put a bag, a good filter and a good hose on them. And you can add power tool plugs or remote starts on them. The only real advantage to high end dust extractors is they're so much more convenient. In my experience, the ridgid is actually more powerful as well. I absolutely love my Festool CT Midi, but I'm not going to get rid of my Ridgid, especially for messy cleanup jobs that I don't want to junk up the festool with.

I've had my Rigid Shop Vac since dinosaurs roamed the earth, and it just keeps on working. I did make the cheap double bucket cyclone filter and added a 12 ft hose to reach different areas of the shop.. Works like a charm. The buckets capture 80%+ of the dust, and I only have to clean the Shop Vac filter occasionally. Yup, it's still loud.

Came here from Jon’s post (Lincoln St Woodworks). Great video Jason! I’m into woodworking/DIY for almost 2 years. Agree with you on the shop vacs - not worth it at all on their own. Although a cyclonic dust separator like DustStopper and other mods could make it more efficient. Also agree with the drill bits - brad point twist bits are fantastic for wood. I resisted my urge to buy vintage planes from a recent yard sale 😂. Never had Kreg clamps except for the one that came with the K5 pocket jig. Great info overall! Keep it up!

If you can get a good deal on a old hand plane that is complete I'd jump on it honestly. They can end up saving you some money. One issue is that in recent years woth them becominv more of an "antique" piece value them as such and they sometimes ask upwards of 100-200 dollars and for a little more money you can get something new that is made of the same materials as the good ol' days. I'm so happy you enjoyed the video. 🙏

Shop vacs....ridgid ones aren't that great. Craftsman scores higher in tests. Quieter, more powerful, better design, better value.
Secondly buy the shop vac for the task, large ones do great for demo and outdoor tasks (they're bulky). Medium (5 gallon ish) are ideal all around auto, home units. Small (1 to 3 gallon) fill up quickly so aren't useful for most bigger tasks, but due to ability to bag and produce more power than other vacuum cleaners still have a place. PS. I always use bags in my shop vacs because the filters last forever without clogging and the bags do not reduce power but will reduce messiness. Win win!

I use general purpose for most of that, but if I want precision, or if the metal's hard, I have a set of Presto* cobalt bits which are amazingly good. I keep them for special occasions...

My guy - if you have a hobby woodshop, you still need a shop vac. Unless you have like a 3gajillion cfm dust collector, you will still get dust in random places. Not a fan of using a dust collector to clean it up since it’s not that portable. There are hepa filters and bags for every shop vac brand, including rigid. Also a non festool Random orbit sander will still need to be hooked up to a shop vac. Don’t stress beginners out by saying they should skip an affordable still very useful low end option.
That said, your other items are dead on!

I agree with most of it except for the shop vac. Yes it's noisy, but it does have a lifetime warranty through Home Depot. If you spend a bit more money on a 6.5hp model you can get upwards of 200CFM as well for about 1/4 the price of a festool. Just some things to consider. I also attached mine to a dust deputy and an Eagle 11gal plastic can with the steal snap ring for air tight connection. I get almost nothing in the vacuum now and still full power. DD about $50, eagle can was $38 at that time. But yes, it's too loud, to the point I want to put it in a cabinet, and TBH I'm looking to get a 4" shop fox dust collector which has about 600 CFM, and yet still put it in the cabinet. You're getting a lot of pushback on the shop vac thing, and really you do still need a shop vac around (if a drink gets knocked over I'm not gonna clean up the liquid and glass with a Festool), but when I upgraded to a Festool extractor I was shocked at how much better it worked than any of the several shop vacs I've owned. The other HEPA extractors are not far off the smaller Festools in price, though, so it's still probably beyond most beginner budgets. I'm interested to see what you find if you do do a followup to look at mods and accessories, it'd be great if it's actually possible to get anywhere close to $500+ extractor performance at shop vac prices.
