Actually having a few AP shells for the derp gun can be a good thing, since you can overmatch plenty of tanks with this caliber, and having AP will make it much more easier to do than HEAT, or using it against tanks with weak armor but can be enough to be against your 76mm HE pen
I remember O-Ni being pinpoint accurate with the AP gun, but I think that was because of the crew, because you had kaku crew 🙄 Even so, nice performance with both guns!

that last game was a masterpiece. driving a T7 boat in a T8 game on Prok, and blindkilling rhm was blatiful!

I remember this tank as on of the best if not the best T7 heavy back then when it was released. Then WG nerfed HE and buffed Gold ammo and destroyed this heavy line....
It broke my heart when you say that AP on the big gun is useless because you can make a lot of damages (and penetrations) with it, even with tier VIIIs. I've played the O-I for 900 games (and 2-marked it) and I shoot almost only APs and there is just 4 or 5 tanks you can't penetrate that easily (T-150, Churchill, ATs) but can be if you play correctly. Obviously I didn't played against Tier IXs with this gun, but I think you're totally right about you can't do anything (at least i think you can't penetrate majority of the tanks even in the side armor xD) against them with it.
For exemple, last week I've outplayed a full HP Bourrasque with AP in close fight, and yesterday I've totally destroyed a KV-2 in 10s (-750 shell, -70 fire, and raming) because KV-2 can do litterally nothing against my armor x)
I do like the AP from the derp guns for 3x overmatching light armor (up to about 49mm for the O-I through O-Ho, since the 15cm is technically a 149.1mm gun). I generally used the 10cm guns on the O-I and O-Ni, but the 15cm on the O-Ho, since it's the tallest and has the best visibility of hull/turret roof armor.
Unfortunately WG nerfed the RoF for 15cm on the O-Ho massively in the 1.5 update (reload used to be 16.3s w/ a 100% crew and no equipment, now nerfed to 21.09s). Since they later did the significant nerf to HE non-pens, I hope they buff the reload back at some point, so I can go back to trolling around with AP overmatches again (while still being somewhat effective instead of nearly useless).
(I can only talk about O-I) but yea, one of the biggest mistakes players do is not realizing the potential of 121 pen with 700 alpha at tier 6.... Guess u could carry around 5-10 with the higher tier brothers as well...
Decent games, don't forget to make use of the field modifications, since you can upgrade some.
I had ONE good game in the O-Ni before the nerf. O-ho wasn't any better. I rarely play my Japanese Heavy Tanks anymore
Tier 5 and tier 6 are playable.
It is a piñata, a vk3001h (tier 5) can chew through the front with gold ammo without aiming
O-ni is good tier 4 tier one, I usually use the 100mm and I mostly have gud results, just angle your front armour a bit and it's around 200mm+
Only worth tank form this line is O-I that derp gun Is pretty fun and even with 120 mm of penetration on AP it can work, i penetrated so much tanks, just becouse they didnt knew i had APs reloaded

Honestly the only thing this tank needs is a slight buff to accuracy for the AP gun and a dpm increase.
It's not even that bad, most people complaining are the he spammer fraction.

It's a piniata unless you are a free2play player, especially lower tier (usual case)
If toptier, this tank is a beast, pretty fast for its weight and armor that works (frontally), the derpgun is useless and should not be used, vs higher tiers its another story but thats the fate of every tanks that relies on its armor.

Unpopular opinion: this tank isn't that terrible. The 105 MM gun is pretty solid so you can kinda make it work if you keep some distance between you and whatever you're facing
