First view! First Like! First comment! Whoop whoop! The Motels were a US college band which pretty much broke first in Australia. Returned to US and had some top chart songs.
Nick, this is one hell of a song, one of my all-time favourite tunes. Martha Davis was an amazing singer and this is an example of her dramatic delivery. Just beautiful. Great memory.
I reckon you might like some of their other songs. Only The Lonely - ua-cam.com/video/no8ZRIKm6UE/v-deo.html Suddenly, last Summer - ua-cam.com/video/DamSsHxbPAo/v-deo.html - ua-cam.com/video/b9Ox-lGm-wA/v-deo.html Take the L ( out of Lover ) - ua-cam.com/video/Ooi8Cnb1fx0/v-deo.html
Great request. I went down a ‘The Motels’ rabbit hole a few years ago. It turned out I already knew a lot of their songs without knowing it was them. The song Suddenly, Last Summer has an Icehouse sound to it which then always puts me on an Icehouse binge.
I loved Icehouse so much back in the day. Still do. Their Great Southern Land live version in the.... I think.... Year 2000 New Years' Eve fireworks was amazing.
Wow, those doing your requests are so on point in recent times, this is one of my all time favorite tracks and performances. Love it!! This performance is what myself and the professor of rock like to call, bottled lightning! For me, this never gets old!
Loved this band in the 80s...this track, Only the Lonely, Take the L & Suddenly last Summer ☺️ They had a lot of line up changes, but Martha Davis was the constant.
The rhythm section is the driving force and is very hard to keep it at that pace right the way through out the whole song and with Martha's voice and the sax lead (not a guitar lead) this song will be an all time classic!!
Countdown was THE music show for Australian youth back in the 1970s/80s (we didn't have MTV). Hosted by the late great Molly Meldrum, so many Australian bands got their first break on this show, and many international acts guested on it--often the only way anyone who lived out of Sydney or Melbourne could see the bands at all. I'm 51 now, and still have so much nostalgia over this show.
The original version and video was on Countdown for weeks when I was a kid in the 70's, which is why I'm blown away that I missed this in the Melbourne (Elsternwick) studios 70's production of Countdown when I was I kid. I loved this song. Martha used to disturb me strangely as a kid when i was 6 or 7. And kept disturbing me from then....well I'm 53 and pretty sure that she has passed on. Sexy is sexy. She wasn't singing to me as a 7 year old. I was an innocent bystander of Countdown. Molly Meldrum had great taste for the bands he featured, and brought over to Australia to feature.
My memory of The Motels was many years ago when played live in Melbourne Australia and the local radio station did a report and the reporter said after a live cross from the concert " Well The Motels have just finished and I know one gentleman certainly enjoyed it". Martha was and still is one sexy women.
Old Count Down footage is probably owned by the ABC ,Australian Broadcasting Commission .I think (Ian ) Molly Meldrum the host may of had a crush on Martha Davis LOL .I think they had to Sing or Mime to a backing track as well.
I've always loved this song it's sexy and saltry sound very simple but very affective. it was also used in a car commercial for sobaru in New Zealand.nice 👍❤️🥝🇳🇿
Can you please react to JP Cooper - Holy Water(Gospel Choir Version)? it is so up your alley and a great introduction to a singer you have Never heard of.
Good band but you should realise that you're watching Count Down which was Australian TV and the great Molly Meldrum who brought the music to Australian teens for generations. We love you Molly.

This song is nuts. So restrained. Works so perfectly. It's a real ear-worm, musical virus meme. Less is more perfection.
The restraint of this song is what got my attention when this record first came out When New Wave was new.
I've always loved the restrained lunacy of this song. Martha Davis had a very dramatic style. "Only the Lonely" is another good Motels song.
Love The Motels of this era. Another fave is The Pretenders - Brass in Pocket amongst many great songs
One of my favourite songs. I love the pared back intimacy of it all.
I'm happy someone requested that song I've always had a spot in my heart for it since I was a kid
🥰
Don't worry Nick it will get stuck in your head. 🎵
First view! First Like! First comment! Whoop whoop! The Motels were a US college band which pretty much broke first in Australia. Returned to US and had some top chart songs.
Only the Lonely is my fav of theirs. it's so classic 80s snapshot of great melody and instrumentation.
Oh man this song is going to live in your head for days now 🤣
It's about time the saxophone solo made a comeback.
This is a great song and just recently my favourite singer Missy Higgins (Aust) also sang it and made it a modern version. Beautiful.
She has done a brilliant version. Love it.
Soz, but I think the original beats it hands down!
This is why I love this channel… had no idea Missy covered this and I’ll look for it now.
Tina Turner also did a cover in the early 80s. It's hard to find, but a gem. But nobody does it like Martha Davis!!
Another old favourite 😍
I was 16, The Motels were a revelation, opened me up to whole new genres of music.

The Motels were HUGE in NZ. I remember this being played at garage parties all the time as a kid.
Oh, this song brings back so many great memories.
A young mother at 15, more tragedies in her life than most people, and she wrote most of the songs including this one ❤️
Great request. I went down a ‘The Motels’ rabbit hole a few years ago. It turned out I already knew a lot of their songs without knowing it was them. The song Suddenly, Last Summer has an Icehouse sound to it which then always puts me on an Icehouse binge.
Thanks! One of my fav songs

Seeing this band in small clubs in Boston made for great nights 😊 The first album was great

It does work. Everything about this song was unique, it just hit different, but in a really good way. Still does after all these years.
I really think that Martha was a big influence on Gwen Stefani....a very similar tone and enunciation ❤
Oh my gosh, now that you mention it, yes!!
Wow I never noticed before, but there is a definite similarity!!
Loved this band in the 80s...this track, Only the Lonely, Take the L & Suddenly last Summer ☺️
They had a lot of line up changes, but Martha Davis was the constant.
Love the Motels, they were very underrated in my opinion but had some great stuff.
This has been played on radio for 40yrs+....
Chrissy Amphlett, I Touch Myself. Aussie group, same era. Could be an interesting reaction ; ) Live version
I touch myself is their worst song. If not for the lyrics this song would never of been a hit.
@@kerryeva I just think his reaction would be funny to watch.

Omg, what a flashback. Totally forgot about this song
Awesome song
I loved this song back in 1980...first heard it via radio on lord howe island on my 23rd birthday !!! Still know the words

@@teresahale7616 I was thinking of Patty Donahue from The Waitresses.
