“When you follow drugs you get drug addicts and drug dealers but when you start to follow the money you don’t know where the fuck it’s going to take you” - Lester Freamon
"Sheeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiit" - Bunk Moreland
@@joshuaseeberg5742Clay Davis.
That is a very cool and excellent quote and really suits the video. Top work!
We know exactly where the money leads that why it never goes past the dealers unless it's used as a way to take out a politcal/business adversary
because the love of money is the root of all evil?
You never drink alone if you’re listening to Tom Waits.
You never trust a man in the blue tranche coat when you listening HIM
I, like him, would rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.
See you at the meeting.
Then i never drink alone. Thank you
I got Hiccups man. Proud of em too.
This fit in perfectly within Season 2!
i always thought it was a black guy
@Kelly Mojica That version is a cover of the Tom Waits version, actually
@@hoze1235 yeah! like an old christian black man, I couldn't help but imagine it like that :D
Facts
Absolute ❤❤
Ribot's guitar is insane. A very limited guitar player could actually play it after not a lot of practice. But man , to come up wirh such weird and perfect combination of notes, it's totally insane. It's mesmerising, in my opinion.
Great guitar indeed
You have captured my exact feelings about the guitar on this track.
For sure. The creativity of it is superb. A lot of players can achieve technical process, but few have anything original to say. The guitar solos here are unique. Just perfect for a Tom Waits song.
I was listening to this, loud, at 2am, 15 years before The Wire was ever on television. And yet, it's absolutely perfect for each purpose.
I've never watched a single solitary episode of The Wire, or any film or television production which featured this song, and it seems kind of cheap to co-opt this song for something as useless and tacky as an HBO series.
@@RockandrollNegro You’re missing out, the Wire certainly isn’t tacky.
@@AidanCulverREAL This
@@RockandrollNegro Whatever. You have binged this show from beginning to end at least 10 times.
@@RockandrollNegro I think you missed the point of the original comment my brotha. one love.
Out of all of them this was by far my favorite one. 😮💨
& it's the one from season 2 arguably the worst season 😂
@@angelcanez4426 By default. 😅 It was actually a great season.
@@Flee810 a lot of people don't like it but it's shockingly important to the story
@@angelcanez4426 thought so on my first watch. Re-watch the wire and you may start to see it was actually the best.
@Pritam Laskar I don't think it the best, but it definitely does not deserve so much hate from the Fandom 🤣
It is a very good season
RIP Michael K Williams
This mans soul is in his music
Indeed✊🏿Been Listening 2 Tom 4 a While Now✊🏿💪🏿
what a sweet voice!!!!!!
Tom Waits soul is sheer poetry.❤️🌹
Best solo ever.
Marc Ribot is a gem. A left-handed guitarist playing right-handed. Marvelous
People may think season 2 is not the best of The Wire (I personally love).
But this is definitely the best version of their intro!
It's the original too.
Best intro but Season 2 is genuinely hard to sit through
@@matthewmiller1865 I just started. Is season 2 bad or something? I’m current at season 1 episode 10
@@JarmalK you probably watched it by now, but many people including myself think season 2 feels like a side quest in relation to the rest of the show. But, it's still necessary to Simon's goal of showing the full caricature of the city, every nook and cranny. Coulda been a couple episodes rather than a full season tho.
You need season 2 to see how the Greek fits into everything.
All the pieces matter.
Absolute legend.
feels weird to hear this outside of The Wire. My favourite show of all time though and possibly my favourite Waits album too!
i always thought it was a black guy
It could be weird because The Wire theme was different each season being sung by by a different person each time.
There used to be a compilation here on UA-cam, but it was either pulled or the uploader deleted it.
It was my first Waits album and definitely a part of the 7 albums i absolutely love.
It puts a smile on my face knowing that the Internet has at least been good for introducing people to Tom Waits.
Huge, long time Tom Waits fan. Loved The Wire. But I would REALLY love it if this was the song for the next season of The Crown.
i always thought it was a black guy

Blues music transcends race my brother
Blues is a human feeling I feel that x
I mean, the actor of McNulty was there.
Masterpiece
Just started The Wire after over 10 years of saying I absolutely would.. wish me luck!
Just finished!
@@kinGsaL1515 good aye
@@ponuibelizario2958 fucking amazing. I'm on the sopranos now
@@kinGsaL1515 let us know how that goes when ur done! lol
i think the difference between the two shows is the wire's mainly sociological with a focus on its grander narrative, the sopranos is mainly psychological with a focus on its characters. it's an oversimplification, the wire has great characters too, there are twists and turns in the plot of the sopranos, etc, i think what they have in common is critiquing america, but yeh, just enjoy them classics :D
@@stevie8271 Thanks! I just finished S4 E1 5 minutes ago lol. It's great so far although if I am comparing it to the wire.. so far The Wire is still on a whole other level, but I may be speaking too soon. And I 100% agree with the differences you said, the Sopranos focuses so much more on the character especially how much Tony gets in his character as opposed to McNulty.
comfort music. love to you mr. waits.
I remember 3rd Bass, flipped this...back in the day, way before "The Wire" used it for the intro!
Lyrics:
When you walk through the garden
You gotta watch your back
Well, I beg your pardon
Walk the straight and narrow track
If you walk with Jesus
He's gonna save your soul
You gotta keep the devil
Way down in the hole
He's got the fire and the fury
At his command
Well, you don't have to worry
If you hold on to Jesus' hand
We'll all be safe from Satan
When the thunder rolls
We just gotta help me keep the devil
Way down in the hole
All the angels sing
About Jesus' mighty sword
And they'll shield you with their wings
And keep you close to the lord
Don't pay heed to temptation
For his hands are so cold
You gotta help me keep the devil
Way down in the hole
Down in the hole, down in the hole
Down in the hole, down in the hole
Down in the hole, down in the hole
You gotta help me keep the devil
Down in the hole
🙏😊
Amen keep him way done in the whole. Hold onto
Jesus hand.
What about Frank Sobotka? I'm not reading his name in any of this!
Awesome....
How you do that emoji
Fell in love with this track when I watched the live version in his movie 'Big Time', so damn good
Best version of this song and it's not even close.
Best frigging song in the world
LOVE ME SOME WAITS.
As a McNulty from Dundalk, I approve.
I have no idea what you said, but I love it. ✌️💚♾️
Preach brother tom
Best crime drama ever made . Everything else I cannot help comparing and they are never even close .
Tom You Are A LEGEND
One helluva song.
Tip: to make everyday errands feel badass just play this song and pretend you’re a character in The Wire being followed by McNulty and co. Makes dropping off Amazon returns, grocery shopping much more fun 😂
World goin one way, people another.
Excellent version, thanks
Thank you for this song, Tom. But the Blind Boys killed it!
Yea I prefer the blind boys version! Good song either way though!
@@carpediem4887 BlindBoys are good, but this is better, it is so sonically interesting, the way the guitar solo comes in and the odd sound on the sax and having the sax instead of the drums poking out the bossa nova beat is great.
Rest in peace Omar
Epic song
this song is baltimore, and this song represents everything i think my dad lived in that city, the dark smokey clubs, shady people, dark streets, drugs....its weird but if you close your eyes and think of 60s 70s n early 80s baltimore this would be its soundtracc
We started watching Season One about six months ago. I am glad I READ about the change in the opening song before I loaded Season Two, episode one and wondered what the hell had happened????
I'm conflicted, because I was listening to this shit years before The Wire was even a thing and this comment section is completely dismissing the genius who posted the video in the first place...
But also, The Wire IS the best show ever made.
breaking bad is better
@@mynameistaylor1882 Lmfao nah dude
@@mynameistaylor1882 breaking bad isn’t even close. Half the scenes in breaking bad are unwatchable wastes of time. Parts of it are spectacular.
@@chrisdawson1776 With all due respect to The Wire, Breaking Bad is better
@@AidanCulverREAL Breaking Bad doesn’t have a bad season. Seasons 2 and 5 of The Wire a debatable
Inimitable!!❤❤
the game is the game
I cant say I really remember this from "The Wire," but I do remember coming across this gem from "Brimstone," 1998-99 with Peter Horton and John Glover
Hearing this on The Wire I thought it was Gil Scott-Heron at first, what I know of Gil's vocals from 'Me and the Devil'. Both are amazing creatives!
Blackies on the prowl.
happy 72nd birthday Mr. Waits
guitar is the best in this, out of all the other covers The Wire showed.
Best version hands down! It gave me this feeling of hopelessness staying true to the underlying theme of the show!
This and the domaje are the best ones
Thanks Tom, now I want 🦀 😉
Okay, this is a jam.
Glad Frank didn't have to see the collapse of the Francis Scott Key bridge.
Business, always business.
The cicle repeats again
the album is a masterpiece anyway
Nick Cave borrowed heavily from this and Cave's song became the theme song for Peaky Blinders.
Drove me nuts when I first heard the opening to PB only to realise it was Nick Cave.

2 comments here. Either general love for the song or The Wire fans
I think this is the original version of Way Down In The Hole. The rest on The Wire were amazing renditions though.
Although I understand better what's tom say the version in the concert is wild and indubitably better

Does anyone know what inspired Tom Waits to write this song? I know there's some Gospel inspiration, but is there anything more specific that anyone knows? I Googled it, but my question was so baffling to the search engine that they sent me a questionnaire. Soooo yeah. I feel like it's an important subject but little is out there.
The holy spirit
Tom Waits from an NPR interview in 2011:
"Down in the hole, yeah. I don't know what the origin of the song came, but it was very fast. And needing - we needed a gospel song for this collection of tunes that we'd written for "Franks Wild Years," for a show, you know, that eventually was done by Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago and then became a record. I don't know. We had background vocalists on it, which I dug. But the song happened fast. It was like - I was probably thinking about Ray Charles trying to find one of those grooves that he lives in. And once I had the groove, then everything else just kind of fell together, you know?"
The Wire and my mid-90s Metallica fandom brought me here
