    IEW Structure and Style for Writing! This has been a wonderful solution for us!

      A few people have told me to look into IEW Structure and Style. I think I just may have to!!! Thank you.

    Sounds like a great year coming up! I look forward to hearing about your favorite and least favorite books this year!

      Thank you! I’m nervous to mention our least favorites lol. I hate saying when I don’t enjoy a book as it truly is subjective but I also pride myself in making sure I’m honest and authentic on this channel.

    Wonderful! Would you consider filming a day in the life (DITL)?

    • @howweschool
      @howweschool  8 місяців тому

      We will definitely try. I don’t film Jam without his permission, so it’ll have to be a day he feels like being filmed and ok with me posting it. I hope we’ll be able to get a ditl filmed!

    I enjoyed seeing your curriculum choices! I’ve always been curious about Oak Meadow so I look forward to your future videos about it. We read Birchbark House this past school year. The audiobook was really good! It totally made be bawl though 😭. It’s a really good book and my 9yr old was fine with it, but it definitely pulled on my mom heart strings ❤️ I recently saw that Lighting Lit has plans to revamp the composition component. I too have found it a bit lacking, so I look forward to seeing how they will change it up.

      I’m so happy you enjoyed seeing our choices for this school year!
      I’m definitely going to have an in-depth video on Oak Meadow!
      Thanks so much for the warning on Birchbark House. I’m a crier, especially when books tug on my heart strings! Maybe we will try the audio version for the book. When we feel like we need a break from reading assigned literature we opt for the audiobooks, so this may be one we do that with.
      I sure do hope LL revamps the composition portion. It’s one thing to say do this and another to teach how to do it!

      @@howweschool for writing we have been doing IEW in the summer. I find a more writing intensive, basic structure has been really helpful. After we finish IEW we will move into Lightning Lit. grade 4 for my daughter. I’m hoping what she learns from IEW, she will be able to apply to the composition work assigned in Lighting Lit 🤞

      @@michellegf I’ll look into that. Maybe that would be a good way to get his writing up during the summer. Thank you!

    Love seeing your choices! Would you be willing to share how to fit all this in to your week?

    • @howweschool
      @howweschool  2 роки тому +1

      So glad you enjoyed seeing it.
      Yes, we do most OM topics 4 days a week. We usually look it over to see how long we think certain assignments will take and schedule our week based off that.
      Our Evan Moor daily workbooks get done daily. Usually as morning work since he’s able to do those pretty quickly. But every now and then we take a week off from them.
      Curiosity Chronicles, we listened to the audio Monday and Tuesday, then whenever we have time we do the worksheet and the lapbook. We try to do at least one activity but I will usually use a History Unboxed box for that. Just like the Evan Moor books we will take a week off every now and then.
      Fix-It Grammar is a four day week and he does it first thing in the morning. It’s very quick.
      Lightning Lit is mostly reading, so that’s easy to squeeze in. The comprehension and grammar has yet to take us very long so it’s been easy to do in the car or when he’s done with his OM work. This is another one we take a week or two off from after every couple of books.
      And Real Science Odyssey is something we add in when we have extra time! There’s zero pressure with that one!
      So our schedule usually looks like this:
      Evan moor daily sheets
      Fix It Grammar (4 days a week)
      OM LA or math
      Break
      OM LA or math
      Break
      OM Science or Social Studies (these switch off usually, it’s rare we do both in a day)
      Lightning Literature (4 days a week)
      Break
      Curiosity chronicle (3 days a week)
      If we have free time we’ll add in Real Science Odyssey.
      Lots of free time and independent reading time as well. The only time it may get difficult and I’ll put aside one of our curriculum is if he’s struggling with a new concept.
      Hope that helps.

    Take a look at Partnership Writing from Braver Writer. You can use it as a stand alone piece. We have used both Jot It Down and Partnership Writing and it is going pretty well for my reluctant writers. My plan is to use it in combination with Lightning Lit this year.
    I got the World Geography Maps from Evan Moor this year too. We love it so far. Thanks for sharing all this.
    There are some great sources here.

    • @howweschool
      @howweschool  2 роки тому

      You know what’s funny is that we have Partnership Writing, we were loving it and for some reason we put it aside and never picked it back up! I’m going to get back on and I hope that it helps because we were truly enjoying it. I think sometimes I put too much on my plate and have to take some stuff away and that was what went but it’s probably what we needed most this year.
      So happy to hear you’re enjoying the Evan Moor World Geography Maps! It’s always good to hear a positive review about something you just purchased.
      Thanks!

      @@howweschool I can totally relate to putting to much on your plate! I planning on trying to do some loop scheduling were we spend a few weeks on on topic then switch to something else. For instance, art for a week or two and then a project from the Partnership writing for a week or two. My goal is to get less on our daily to-do list, while still being able to cover all the things we want to.

    • @howweschool
      @howweschool  2 роки тому +1

      @@Homeschoolology we tried loop scheduling but it just doesn’t work for my son. Maybe because I did it for all subjects. Maybe if I just do it for other the extras it might work!

    • @Homeschoolology
      @Homeschoolology 2 роки тому

      @@howweschool Yes we only do some subjects on a loop and it works pretty well. We keep math and ELA as daily things and them loop things like art, history, science, etc.

    I’m 95% sure I’ll be trying write shop D for my rising 5th grader this fall. My oldest used Writers in Residence which is excellent but there’s only 1 level and you’d have to get it from Christian books or used somewhere and then you’d be back on the hunt which is why I’m looking strongly at write shop. Lots of people like bravewriter also

    • @howweschool

      I will look into Write Shop. Thank you. We have Partnership Writing from Brave Writer and I don’t know what happened because we were enjoying it so I believe before I go buy anything else I’m going to go back to that and try it again!

    Also... Oak Meadow does have a lot more writing instruction in 6th grade. I really like the writing assignments in 6th grade. One tip though...in OM 6th grade the English and History are separate, but you still need to get both because the writing instruction is in the English, and the writing assignments are in the history. Cheers!

    • @howweschool
      @howweschool  2 роки тому +2

      This is good to know because if you’ve used the younger grades you know they ask you to write but they’re not telling you how to write and you’re still learning the basic grammar rules. I do have the complete OM 6th grade already for the 23-24 school year so I will flip through it so I can get a better understanding of what’s to come with writing. Thank you so much for your insight on OM writing!

      Yeah, I hear ya’! I was so desperate that we used a Christian curriculum this year. I just couldn’t find anything else. We really like it, and it’s been easy to either leave out the religious parts or to use parts to have a good discussion about what our family agrees with and what we view differently. It’s BJU Press English. I don’t use the grammar portion, just the writing chapters. It’s very step-by-step. Best wishes!

      @@AKiHope yes, I’m trying to find a writing curriculum or method that is secular. I feel so often I get pulled into the it’s not secular so I’ll just skip things but truly what I’d like is to find what I need that is secular. If all else fails I’ll look into this. Thank you!!

    Do you recommend buying Oak Meadow curriculum from their website or is it ok to buy used ?

    • @howweschool
      @howweschool  Рік тому

      First, I would definitely purchase used.
      Second, since I don’t know what grade you’re doing I would call Oak Meadow before purchasing used and ask what their latest publication date is for that grade. Once you know the latest publication date you can purchase a used one that is from the newest publication date. Some people don’t mind the older publications but I wouldn’t go too far back and I’m sure you can ask Oak Meadow what’s different between certain publication dates. I hope this helps!
