    Finally a video that tells me where to place my hands on the club. I've seen videos that show you how to grip but I didn't know if I should place my hands up or further down the club. THANK YOU! This is so helpful!

    Just wanted to thank you for this video. I am someone who has always sliced the ball. Recently I have been able to hit more of a fade but the huge slice would still show up from time to time. However, changing my grip like you demonstrated in this video resulted in a round that I just finished without a single slice or fade and even some nice draws. Now if I can just learn to trust it and set up to account for my new shot shape I will be in business! Thank you so much!!!

I am a 60 year old guy from Canada and our season is short, so I am looking forward to trying this out when the weather improves. I have watched some of your other videos and I can see where I can improve my grip, putting, and core swing. There are many great videos here on UA-cam, but your methods of training and manner of speech makes much more sense to me than elsewhere. Great video...one of the best I've seen on grip...if I can add my 2 cents based on my experiences going from a hacker to a 4 handicap, I started out with a very strong grip (probably to help overcome my swing faults) to fight a slice and then as I got better the grip became more neutral but my misses were always hooks so after doing some research about Mr. Hogan's grip, I went to the range and tried lining my V's up to the left eye (which I believe is what Mr. Hogan used when he went to his weaker grip)...it felt very weird at first but my hook was gone and I could go at it as hard as I wanted and my ball flight was generally straight or with a baby draw...as a side benefit I discovered I could hit baby fades too....the moral of my personal story is everybody's swing is different so don't be afraid to go to the range and try adjusting your grip and watch what it does to your ball flight...you might discovery your own grip secret.

    Another great video Clay, great in depth detail, very well explained and presented which is a skill in itself - I have always played with a long left thumb but have consistently struggled to square the club face, i followed your advice and bingo - Guys try this out and stop at impact position - Long left thumb face = Open .... Short thumb face = Square ..... the longer the club the more this is exaggerated.

  • @MattiasA72
    @MattiasA72 4 роки тому +1

    How much in the fingers of the right hand should the club be? Should it run the same way as in the left hand? I've seen a video where the coach says it should be more in the fingers of the right hand to make the right hand weaker to minimise the risk of it being too dominant in the swing.
    Best grip video bar none this though.

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  4 роки тому

    I was struggling with a slice about a year ago until I played with a friend of mine who is a pretty good golfer (at least a single digit handicap and doesn't play often).
    I was trying to strengthen my grip to compensate for my slice after seeing all the advice online. Well, as uncomfortable as it was for me to do, he made my weaken my grip (similar to how Ben Hogans grip was that you mentioned in the video) and my shots went dead straight.
    I think the weakened grip allowed me to get the sensation that I was rolling my hands over and squaring the club face. The weakened grip certainly eliminated one side of the golf course (the left side), but I was also hitting straighter shots because I was rolling my hands over...
    As I've played more and have gotten more comfortable, my grip is more neutral and not quite as weak as my friend suggested I tried out... But that's cause I got comfortable hitting straight shots with an EXTREMELY weak grip. I think the key is to exaggerate different things while practicing to get the awareness.

    I always think random things, but I always wonder why you are not more tan lol. You should stop by HHI sometime (Hilton Head Island)
    As far as your videos; they have been tremendous. I started playing again after 12 years, yes, 12 years and the videos have been helping. Just have to keep working on everything till I get my swing and consistency down and I will be happy. I noticed because I played baseball, hockey and lacrosse it throws my driver off a lot when I started again. The attack angles are much different, but all it takes is practice and making my body get used to the movement. I hope you hold your head high knowing you help so many individuals because we all only get one life and I feel you are making the most of yours and hopefully enjoying life as much as we are. Thanks again, Clay. Have a great weekend and I will work on all this again tomorrow when I go to play again!

    The v points to my shoulder not my ear

      That's fine. You can use a weak or stronger grip. It's really personal preference and what works best for you. The key is not having the club too much in the fingers and not too much in the palm.

    Here's something really simple: Place your hands on the club with absolutely no tension or twisting of either of your wrists. This neutral zone grip allows proper finger pressure and overall light grip pressure which in turn promotes club head speed and accuracy through impact.

    Thanks Clay ! My grip is definitely on the stronger side. I feel as though I can generate so much more power using my two thumbs as "accelerator levers" on the club, compared to when using a neutral grip. Would you agree that more power can be generated in the downswing with a stronger grip ? (I feel about a 20% increase in torque/power)

    Went to the range today to try a grip that was highly rated and commented on. Turns out it's super strong after watching this, which is why I struggled. So hard to find good golf info

      You can have a weak, neutral or strong grip with everything talked about in the video. The main idea here is that you don't want it too much in the fingers and too much in the palms. If it's too much in the fingers then your grip may not be very secure. If it's too much in the palms then it's difficult to get a good hinge.

      @@TopSpeedGolf - once I saw this vid it made sense what I had been trying was wrong and I tested the tips from this vid down the range. Grip feels perfect now whilst I'm swinging whereas before it felt wrong just wasn't sure why. I've just got to work on squaring that face, opening the hips.... Staying central.. easy! (Help 😂)
      I think I've solved my problem anyway. Where I used to drive the ball solid 300+ straight, I used to be super fit and now I'm older (fatter 😬) I'm much less mobile so I figure I used to have athletic recovery in the downswing I don't have now.
      Your videos are great, thanks for the reply man, I really appreciate it and keep up the good work 👍

    Morning, Clay, me again. I wonder what your personal thoughts are on how to initiate the downswing. There is so much information, a lot of it different, about how this occurs. Keith

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  8 років тому

      +Keith Dennis Hi Keith. It should happen that you shift to the right early in the backswing. As you are about waist high in the backswing, your weight first begins to start shifting left. As you start the downswing, your left foot will push into the ground, and your hips will start to rotate open, then the shoulders, then the arms and club release.
      Here is a video I did on the hips opening part. Good luck and play well! ua-cam.com/video/_vFBe5RtBvs/v-deo.html

    Dear Clay, total beginner question. With a one iron I can easily see how the club face would line up, but with even a 6 iron, which has maybe a 30 degree face, what is it you are actually lining up? The base of the face?

    I noticed a number of more modern players use a stronger grip than was taught in the 70s. I also have noticed that trying to get "shaft lean" tends to open up the club face at impact with a more neutral grip. Using a stronger grip seems to make it easier to keep a square club face during a strong rotation into the ball and with "leaning the shaft," and compressing the ball. I haven't taken this to the range as yet (new thoughts) but it seems to make sense to me. I have seen that rotating quickly and strongly through often ends up with a slightly high fade, especially with the longer clubs (3 hybrid, fairway woods and esp the driver), sometimes a push or sometimes getting the club a little stuck behind. Your thoughts?

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  7 років тому

      HI, thanks for the comment. Yes, a stronger grip can make it a little easier to get forward shaft lean. If you have a weaker grip then you'll need to square the face at impact by turning the handle bowing the lead wrist. This is what Clay talks about in The Move section on the website. • @jonathongeorge1084
    @jonathongeorge1084 3 роки тому

    I've been taught to hold the club in your left hand across my fingers and not the palm. In the right hand, you basically hold it with your middle/ring finger with very little pressure. Holding in the palm restricts hinging is what I was taught.....?

    I see a lot of people recommending a long thumb saying it leads to a better hinge. Why do you choose to do short thumb?

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  5 років тому

      Hi Shlomo, you want a short thumb so that you get better coverage on the grip with the fingers. If you have a long thumb then you may have grip security issues. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

    Love Clay's advice but on this one I have to say it doesn't work for me. After years of trying to avoid the long left hand thumb (leading hand) I became frustrated and decided to work tirelessly to move in the direction of Dustin Johnson. To begin with I was completely the opposite of DJ's left hand position at the top of the swing until I studied DJ's grip and found that DJ uses a long left hand thumb which I have found to be what works for me. I must position my left hand below the bump on the end of the club's grip which allows me the ability to Flexion my left hand at the top of the swing. It took me 8-months to become comfortable with my new swing - but it was worth it. I have become more consistent, stronger and confident.
