For a budget painting handle use Old Tylenol bottles, that have the Adult Safety lock. Where it spins freely it is great for minis, and its pretty much free. Just add some Bluetac or Double side tape.
Thanks, I will get one of them spinny handles ! Instead of a vortex mixer I use a massage wand, its multipurpose as the girlfriend uses it too, but not for painting :)
For myself? I'm using both Princeton Velvetouch synthetic and Monument Hobbies's Bomb Wick sable & synthetic brushes, Loc-Tite gel superglue for most anything except plastic (for which I have Tamiya cement like yours on hand), and double sided foam tape on top of shaving cream can lids as model holders, and the Monument Hobbies Jentastic brush soap is pretty awesome too. I've been considering a vortex mixer for a while, now, as it happens, and maybe a specific chair for my painting table is in order as well? Good video, Miss Angela!
Thank you for using/advocating synthetic sable. I think the growing consensus in hobbying by influencers is “get a kolinsky sable”. No one talks about where these natural hair brushes come from, but it doesn’t end well for the weasels. I use the Mimik “Kolinsky” series from Jerry’s Artorama, and they are fantastic and no animals harmed.
I agree. It’s a total myth that you can’t paint well with synthetics. There’s two things I see the go along with that. People compare super cheap brushes. Like 12 for $5. Yes of course they won’t last. There’s plenty of middle room. And two they forget they still need to take care of them. A good cleaning with some brush soap goes a long way. Anywho, I’m excited to try these.
I just picked up the Norden Gateleg from Ikea a week ago for my hobby room. I'm not putting it together until I have the room setup how I want it but all of the things that you mentioned about it in your video are the reasons why I wanted it.
I would defintely add my brush soap, which has made a big difference in cleaning out my brushes and keeping them longer. I also use a vortex mixer and I tend to mix my paints upside down which seems to mix them even better than in the normal orientation.
That Tamiya is awesome, and I'm looking forward to getting a bottle almost empty so i can throw some cut up sprues to melt in it, but not until I get a second bottle lol
To be honest I'm a bit surprised you don't use natural hair brushes, Kolinsky type, like W&N 7 series or Raphael 8404 (Citadel brushes are shitty IMO and not worth the price GW demands). I'd also add water palette and workshop lamp (very strong wide horizontal lamp on movable arm).
I have used W&N Series 7 brushes before, they were my go to for the comic book work I attempted. But I have found I get perfectly great tip control and shape with my synthetic sable mix, so I've been sticking with the Escoda for now.
Really useful advice. I've bookmarked this for when we finally buy a house later this year and I unpack all my miniatures and paints! Already have the chair at least
I also recently started using the Tamiya thin cement glue and it has changed my approach to assembling plastic models. I made some spru goo using the cement and have been happy with how it fills fine gaps.
I have a problem with many of the painting handle solutions I've tried in the past, and that problem is metal minis. I've got a fair collection of BattleTech minis and the majority of them are metal. Especially with some of the chonkier ones (I'm looking at you Kodiak II), getting them to stick to the darn handle is a real struggle. Poster tack doesn't cut it, and double-sided tape only seems to work if I use the thicker foam tape, which is a pain to scrape off the base when I'm done. I've seriously considered hot-gluing them to a really thick section of wooden dowel! I actually think the base-clamp style like the Citadel one might work for really heavy minis, but I haven't been willing to pay Citadel prices to try one out. Most of what I've seen on the channel has been plastic minis, so I'm not sure if this is something you have really had to deal with. Oh, and the fan service shot at the very end was funny. The, "I know what you are doing Chaos Cultist" wink was perfect!
I'm getting into bigger brushes with synthetic hairs. They hold more paint and only take a bit more care when cleaning and its worth it. I know they are only weasels but I dont like the thought of them suffering for a trivial reason. Was trolling around the shops yesterday while I was waiting for my local warhammer shop to finish lunch. Got a pack of about 20 brushes for like four quid from an arts and crafts shop and most of them are decent quality. Make up brushes for drybrush and good old small wall paint brushes get used for rhinos. I dont do spray painting with airbrush Im strictly old school. Cheers Angela.
I pick up a lot of brushes from craft stores too! It's where I used to buy my Escoda's before the Blick near me went down hill. But the multi packs of cheap synthetic brushes I use fairly often too. Just gotta keep them clean and their tips will keep their shape for quite a while.
Hard to argue with top 5 to be fair! Personally I find the painting handle OK but not amazing. If I hadn't got one for free in the Conquest magazine sub I wouldn't have bought one and having one I wouldn't go a buy one. That's me though and some people love them so go for it! It would give me room to add something different into the Top 5. I'd put it sanding sticks and plastic putty (combo!). Great for filling inevitable gaps in models and sanding down seam lines for a super smooth finish.
Yeah that Tamiya glue is awesome. I got used to just using super glue as I do a good mix of resin and plastic and got sick of it spilling everywhere on the plastic so I tried it out. It's my plastic go to glue now. I did just get a gel super glue and hoping I get more control when I build my Legion Glaive tank.
Hi Angela, how you're doing? I really agree with you, the RGG handle really makes the difference, even if I feel comfortable with the two GW old models, and the Tamiya glues are wonderful, I think are the best I ever used. Thanks for this video,
Another great video Angela! I recently “discovered” the Tamiya glue as well and you’re right, it’s a flippin’ game changer! I also got a vortex mixer a few months back and I just want to break out into an Aladdin broadway rendition of “A Whole New World” every time I mix a bottle of paint on that thing. 😜 I was surprised that lighting didn’t make your top 5 tools. The lights on your work table caught my eye. What lights are those and how do you like them?
i had hand made wooden painting handles that i use all the time, they may not be as fancy as the RGG ones but they do just as good a job :) although i might need to add magnets to a couple of them lol
shocks me that miniature makers don't use extra thin, for me helps being a crossover hobbyist from the 'normal' modelling world, i'm never without at least 3 bottles, 1 on which has melted sprue in it for gap filling.
Testors Liquid Cement is on par with the Tamiya cement. It's perfect for plastic and has a very thin tube applicator that can place a tiny drop of cement accurately on small surfaces. And it's inexpensive, too; only about $6 for a bottle that lasts a very long time.
My hobby shop has an extra thin cement that I use also 😊 I have a tamiya one(I don’t think it’s “extra” thin tho) but I got it for the clear bottle to make into sprue goo
@@HobbyNight the one I’m taking about doesn’t have warhammer tho (there is a GW just as close) but it has rc, slot cars, trains, planes etc, it’s the best place for me to get hobby stuff that’s not GW expensive 🥰
Escoda brushes are one of the finest brands on hobby and painting brushes. They are HEAVILY expensive, so they are not recommended for novice painters, but they last forever if well cared. I still have (and use) ones my dad gifted me when I was 15 (and I have 44 now xD).
i have set of escoda brushes, haven't use them that much sadly. I just ordered tamiya glue last week. Have you tryied the tamiya magic goop? you cut up some sprue and mix it with the tamiya in the container until it become this grey goop and it's great for gap filling. I'm still waiting for my red grass game paint handle to arrive. My next buy is the vortex mixer.
I actually got a vortex mixer after your first video you posted about it and it’s definitely a game changer. Looks like I’ll have to get those handles too!
I was going wait and see if you were going to mention airbrushes but seeing that you prim outside I can see you do spray paint. What are your thoughts on airbrushes? Do you have one and use it for priming?
Great video Angela... have u made your sprue glue yet,, do u have a recipe? I do have a serious issue with hobbing in the last 6 months. I have the paint, brushes, tools but I have lost motivation for painting and creating... how do you stay motivated?
Motivation is so tough to maintain, but I do a few things to help. The main thing I do is set myself ~achievable~ goals so that am likely to succeed at them which encourages me to want to do more or even to try new things. I also switch projects pretty regularly. I often will grab a one of kit to paint if I am feeling bogged down and demotivated by current main project. And I always try to pick something that will be very different from whatever that current project is. I use the Underworlds sets a lot for this exact purpose. If that doesn’t help, you could also do what I did when I was hard resetting myself back into the hobby and start a Instagram page dedicated to the hobby that you post on daily or a UA-cam channel you post to 3 times a week!
@@HobbyNight All great suggestions... but I am not one for a channel... I enjoy all of the content providers on youtube now to include yours. lately its just self starting, I think if I can get over that hurdle I may get the bug again. I am going to really put an effort into trying to do something this weekend. I bought a cordless airsprayer, so I really should get it out instead of staring at it on my desk. thanks Angela!
Hi! Where do you recommend I go buy the vortex mixer? Amazon seems to offer various prices but there's always sour comments in both expensive and cheaper ones. I could take the plunge but I'd like to get the real thing. Thanks!
I use the size 4 the most but will pull out the 6 and 2 pretty regularly too depending on what I am painting. But if I had to pick one to bring to a desert island with me I would go with the 4.
So I looked up the Norden table because it looks amazing, but Holy Shit, that's almost 200 dollars in sweden, I don't even own any furniture that expensive, My Computer cost less than that!
I didn't get to to say thank you properly at the premiere of the vid for the tips and advice you gave me. So Thank You! it was really helpful.

I think it is a great table for hobbying on! Built in storage, a large surface area, but can also be made to be compact if needed! It's so good!
Thank you for the table recommendation! That is the exact thing I need! Something that is study, wide, and collapsible!
