- Watch Sir Antonio Pappano lead NYO-USA in a performance of Edward Elgar’s “Nimrod” from “Enigma Variations,” Op. 36, as an encore to the ensemble’s performance at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg in 2019.
NYO-USA 2019 comprised 119 members-ages 16-19 and hailing from 33 US states-who were recognized by Carnegie Hall as some of the finest players in the country following a comprehensive national audition process. In preparation for its performance activities in the New York area and abroad, NYO-USA once again worked with an impressive list of principal players from many of the nation’s top professional orchestras during its training residency.
Following a return to the Tanglewood Music Festival in Lenox, Massachusetts, Sir Antonio Pappano and NYO-USA took the stage Carnegie Hall for the orchestra’s annual concert in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage. The program included Strauss’s “Eine Alpensinfonie” and Berlioz’s “Les nuits d’été” featuring renowned mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard. The orchestra then departed to Europe for debut performances as part of the Young Euro Classic series at Konzerthaus Berlin with mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená, as well as the Edinburgh International Festival and Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, and a return to the BBC Proms and Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam with mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato.
This piece of music quickens the heart of every English soul.
Everyone with a soul
@@hoof2001 For the English, it hits different for what it represents to us. Our nation, our identity. The sacrifice of life, given by those in their duty to us.
As a Briton in mourning at the loss of our great Queen, thank you for tributes like this. Even though this wasn't uploaded for her majesty, and was done so years prior to her passing, it's touching to see our cousins from across the globe sharing and practicing great music like this. Just like in 2001, when 9/11 saw thousands of Americans stranded in London and UK, the British guards performed your nations anthem in solidarity with your loss and the people's trauma. For me, this returns the favour.
Look like several members of the orchestra were about to burst into tears. Amazing how Nimrod can do that.
Who wouldn’t, it’s a powerful piece especially if you can connect it to something personal in your life
This was their last concert, I’m sure it was very sentimental
I had this played at my fathers funeral. It was his favorite. They play this every year at the cenotaph in london on remembrance day. It echoes around Whitehall, very moving.
It symbolises the British peoples acknowledgement of the debt we owe to the generation who lived and fought through the world wars and brings tears tomany eyes. Awesome music.
Thank you for performing this peice for the late Queen Elizabeth II.
Beautiful
This piece just echoes the lush green fields of ENGLAND with every note
The virtuosity is astounding.
What a memory it must be for a young orchestra to play such a piece; I wonder if they are aware of it
amazing!
Lol. I've watched two videos of this music piece performed and my eyes have felt watered. Wow. Incredible! Awesome! Keep up the good work!! :) And just to add, very cool to see a female timpanist! :)
instablaster.
A very special performance a chemistry of young and confidence has produced a unique moment of greatness.
Best performance I’ve heard
The words to this are beautiful, We will stand together by Russell Watson.
A very good Youth Ochestra, but watch / listen to, this wonderful music, as played by the Radio de France Philharmonique, conducted by Mikko Franck. on YT. Only the Best. In my opinion of course.
REGARDING MY COMMENT---THE VID I RECCOMENDED WAS REMOVED 2 YRS AGO.
Sound is too low.... ^^
i'M ON MAXIMUM
1:14 yooooooo it's Larry David in the audience
Viola and cello section swapped? Is that to give violas bigger sound?
Thomas Smith that’s how many European orchestras are arranged, so I’m sure Pappano ultimately made the decision for one reason or another. Really depends on the conductor. Some like the lower sounds in the center
@@markmurphy7870 With this particular music, Cello are usually to the for--but, moving the musicans around during a concert is not practicle, or desirable.
Wow! How well this orchestra members are together with this music! It is well done!! They are all youth. I thank to conductor you did wonderful work!!!
Watch at 0.75 speed, its encapsulates Elgar's demons.
Played a little too fast for my liking
Well played, but too hurried for my liking. Not enough time to savour the drama and emotion
It's a youth orchestra ffs.
I've known Enigma Variations since I was 10 ( 65 now ), and have owned maybe four recordings of it. At no point in this performance of Nimrod did I even get a hint of it being rushed - not once.
@@paulkirkland3263 😂like what. People just say stuff to say stuff

Not so well performed.
