Get that Massive Worship Drum Tone with this Industry Secret
Question, what if you could sit down at any drum kit and have it sound exactly like the albums you love? Now you can.
Payden Hilliard, drummer for Leeland & Co-Owner of Drum Sample Shop, has spent the past 6.5 years playing 1000s of services on different drum kits all over the tone & quality spectrum!
Sometimes he shows up at a church and the drumset is absolutely incredible! Other times he shows up and the kit is almost impossible to redeem. He wasn't able to bring a drumset with him on the road either, so he needed to come up with a solution that would allow him to achieve consistent high-quality sounding drums.
The solution: triggering acoustic drum samples!
While there are a lot of physical drum kits out there that you can use to get great sound, they can also be expensive. That’s why sampling has become so popular in recent years. With samples, you have access to an immense range of sounds and tones to choose from at an affordable price.
In the video below, Payden is going to talk all things drum samples in a worship settings. He'll cover:

GEAR LIST:
- Roland SPD-SX
- Kick: Roland RT-30K Kick Drum Trigger
- Snare: Roland RT-30HR Dual Zone Trigger
- Toms: Roland RT-30H Single Trigger
Pure gold this is. Couldn’t be more under-rated.
glad you enjoyed!!
♥
I imported these samples into my Roland TD17 and layered two velocities per pad. Sounds awesome!
What do you mean layer two velocities per pad?
Any church drummer can relate with the idea of not knowing what kit your going to play! lol Thanks for sharing man.
So true!!
🔥
Finally! I’ve been tellin’ errybody how good the JETS kits smack. Glad someone finally made a video.
ayeeee 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks for showing us this. I really appreciate it.
That's my guy Payden! Great to see your growth brotha!
I guess 2 things to add, 1st you need Steven Slate Trigger to use these samples in a DAW to sample replace your Snare/Toms live, alternatively if its post recording you could convert audio to midi (using transient mode) and then use say a drum rack inside Ableton and load them up that way. And the second point is blend the snare sample with your existing that way it still feels real. I know both Bethel and Upperroom only use the samples for full groove moments.
Hey Ollie! Yeah, we are familiar with that method. That's definitely one of the ways to go about it! Go ahead and watch both parts of the video series we did to see how we went about blending, triggering, & everything else you mentioned. Appreciate your thoughts, man!
@@Worshiponline can you post a more in depth video going over routing, settings, and sensitivities?
@@nhowery he won't, it's his business
The last kit can literally fill ur stomach....
So don’t worry about making your drums sound good, just get triggers and buy our samples. 😂
Simple solution lol
On the real tho. So frustrating.
Dude, I don't think you paid attention the video at all. There's a lot of things that go into making drums sound good for worship, proper tuning is only a part of it.

Amazing. Absolutely amazing.
Glad you think so!
The pizza box raw kick low key sounded good. Lol
Right?!? 🤣🤣
Super impressed, great video!
thanks for the awesome content! My church uses a TD-50k2 electronic drum. Would you recommend using these samples on electronic drums? the kits on the TD-50x module are great but they don't have that worship sound for the snare that the samples have
glad you’re enjoying the content!! I would recommend these samples! You can also check out Drum Sample Shop- they have phenomenal samples.
🤣🤣🤣 this dude is hilarious 😂 I think the third kit is the most common one that you might see in majority of the churches. And even if you bring your triggers most sound tech don’t even know what’s that thing 🤷🏽♂️😆
He is the funniest dude around! We love the guy. The cool thing about what Payden showed in the series is the sound tech doesn't even need to worry about what triggers are! All the sound tech needs to do is provide an input for the samples to go to the house through and then mix them with the drums! Super super cool & easy! Part 2 shows how Payden sets up his SPD-SX for this. Give it a look!
Hahaha I love that last kit, where can I get one from 😂😂😂
Like Payden said, SUPREME! 👨🏻🍳👨🏻🍳👨🏻🍳
Couple HUGE questions:
What's the mixing process for samples and regular mics?
just straight 50/50? and how do you eq the sample. like you would a regular snare?
What sensitivity do you set your triggers to avoid that awkward "machine gun" sound of the samples at low volume or playing ghost notes etc?
No replies? Sad 😔
@@goodc713 Kyler! So sorry for our delay. Big apologies! Email support@worshiponline.com and one of our audio guys can answer this question!
You really can’t get one of your audio guys to just reply to the comment you’re already 3 months late on lmao
You simply play dumbest possible groove with no dynamics, go ghost notes, flams, just like in the video.
the answer is... whatever sounds good. 50/50 blend to start and adjust from there. if you need more articulation/natural dynamics, lean more heavily on the natural drums. if you need more consistent hits, lean more heavily on the samples. as far as eq, i believe these samples are already eq'd so it's just plug and play.
Great video! Although floor tom sounds so dead.
So boxy, perfect 👌🏼
STUFFED!
Yo that tone is cheeeesey!
🔥🔥
i use triggers with drum samples as layers on top of mics and they sound great
What triggers and drum module are you using?
@@notforyoutube Roland Rt30K for kick and rt30 singles for toms with Roland Tm6 Pro module
Witch are those mics…. I mean the two for the snare, two for the kick and the rest of the set… I would like to know
Snares are SM 57's
Kick is Shure Beta 52
Toms and Overheads are made by Sennheiser
Gotta love Moon Gels lol 😂
absolutely!!
New drum heads properly-tuned are still cheaper than triggers and samples.
Good point... But i think triggers and sample will make your sound consistent you could use it for a long time too
It’s good for touring in case you have to play another kit. I get it
@@kyronnewbury i like to think i can tune decently and I've only been drumming for three and a half years 😅😅
I think Genre is also important, i wouldn't do this if i play in a Jazz band or something. Find out what fits you the best. I'm not saying one is better than the other. Maybe for recording an album, wich takes sometimes a whole year to do having that consistency in the tone of your drums without having to tune after every session (lets be honest "great tunning" is subjective). Than yea i wpuld choose those triggers. But it's all about trying things out for your self and figuring what really works, instead of having an opinion on something without really testing it
And having great drumheads but bad mics won't cut it either, you can spend anywhere between $800 or more on average great mics
Thanks for the video. Watched part 1 and 2. Quick Q - Does this setup with the SPD SX allow for multi-velocity sample triggering? or is it just one sample being played at different volumes?
Do you mean multi-velocity triggering on one drum? That is the same as playing samples at different dynamic ranges! You can control that from the triggers themselves
@@Worshiponline So, with samples... would I be able to start a soft build and slowly get louder on the snare and floor tom? Or are the samples just going to stay the same volume no matter how hard I hit? Or is there a way to add more dynamics?
that pizza box drums sounds a lot better than my real drums
Good stuff brother!!
Thanks for watching, Dennis!!!
Awesome info!!!! Are these available for Roland TD-50X ?
Thank you!!!
Sounds great. what are your trigger settings for the snare trigger? I’m using a Roland trigger with the SPD X and keep getting some misfires from the trigger.

Hahahaha u put it in my head xD
True
Im using midi trigger in both way, 1 for enhanced the sound of my already good acoustic drum with clap, synth and other with noise or low end boom. The 2th reason is for recording midi data with my favorite software sampler im already full of good acoustic and electro drum sound, but thanks.
Hello, I'm trying to find a way to download the spd sx editor, but I don't see software available to Mac OS Monterey 12.3.1, any suggestions?
Hello! Download the software that’s available. It should work!
@@Worshiponline I tried to download the software last night but a message kept popping up saying that it couldn’t open because of malware issues.
I have a yamaha multi 12 the samples work with it
The Rack Tom sound and samples are clashing on all 3 kits so bad haha, Id roll off the attack curve on the sample but then youve still got the weird tone clash
But the other drums samples surprisingly work really well with the acoustics!
Also thats a 60s acro, i have the same
Are there different velocities? We are looking for sounds that we can trigger with a plug in for our broadcast. I am the drummer and really want these sounds but our engineer wants sounds with different velocities.
Last but not least. Can we buy these Sounds in a tci-format too?
God Bless btw
Yes! You can set the velocities for each trigger on the trigger itself!
The secret to that snare sound that no one will tell you is the compression and reverb that’s on it.
Set the compressor threshold to 20 db below where the snare is hitting, and set the ratio to 2:1. Give it roughly 6-8 db makeup gain and you’ll have the nice initial hit.
Then, set the reverb to sound as much like a stadium as you can, and listen to the difference in your mix.
Hello! Can you share a video or documentation on how to set up these triggers to the spd x? I only see 2 trigger options on the console. Not sure how you are doing 4
If we are running a Roland TD50 (electric kit) can we load these samples onto that? How would that work?
You can! You would just follow the instructions on your electronic kit on how to load samples from your computer
Payden: no drum kit? Okay, we 1st gonna buy pizza.
Thank you for this vid! Part 2 was very helpful for me. Also, it would really love to see how it all goes to FOH. Is it one mono DI box from the SPD-SX to FOH or are both Master Outs being used? Are the Sub Outs being used? 2 stereo DI boxes? Also, what triggers are being used? I only know of the DDrum Triggers. Thanks!
At 5:13, it looks like it’s one mono line out to FOH. If that’s the case, are all of the samples already the same volume? Are they balanced in the SPD-SX itself or is there no volume balancing necessary?

Is there another video on how to set up the this unit and run it to the house sound
Any tips for setting trigger thresholds so you don't get false triggers or trigger when playing softer?
Hey Jared!
We’re connecting with our team to get you that answer. Thank you for your patience!!
Play with the threshold settings a bunch, make sure your dynamic settings are on so that the sample volume matches your playing velocity, and also look into getting a kill-switch for the moments you know you don’t want to trigger a sample!
This may be a stupid question, but I’m curious since he’s not running 100% samples and he’s using a hybrid between the sample and the actual drums. Do you have to tune the drums to the same pitch as the samples? It seems like if the drums were tuned lower or higher than the recorded samples you’d hear the difference when the sample is triggered and it wouldn’t sound good.
Not a stupid question at all... I would say that you could tune the drums how you want/need them for the room you are in and then modulate the samples inside the Roland or whatever DAW you are using...
@@marcusfinchum6322 Ok, cool 🤙🏻
just ordered the black stallion just to get my feet wet... kinda hyped..
How do you go when you play a cross-stick. Is that your second sample on the Snare? Or do you use the second sample for a rim shot on the Snare?
Hey Bill! I want to make sure I answer your question correctly. You want to know if there are 2 different samples for cross-sticking and rimshots?
the pizza boxes tho 🤣

I just bought your US/UK packet, which exact kick and Snare did you use the most in the record, or on the way maker live version?
Great question! I’ll get back to you on this 👊
WFL III drums are made where I live in Kansas!
I just set this up and I’m noticing quite a bit of delay/latency from the SPD-SX especially when blending with the kick/snare mics at FOH. Any pro tips?
Great question! Email support@worshiponline.com, and one fo our audio guys will help with this answer!
I think I can hear a delay in this video also, in particular on the kick drum and toms. Not sure though.
I assumed that you would always take your own gear everywhere you go 🙂

Sounds cool....Each trigger $100+ x 4 or more, wires, and $500+ module.... It does add $1000+ to your setup. This does expose a secret.....That being said, I really like to get my drums to sound good without all of this stuff....And if you are setting up every week....it will add time to get everything up, soundcheck never goes perfect. Might as well get a Electronic Kit.
Great point!! All depends on what you're wanting as a drummer!
I bought the drum samples. I am wondering what folders are the low end hi Tom
Do you run the rt30hr at the snare drum as mono? Because otherwise you run in issues with not enough inputs at the spd-sx? Would it be the same in your setup to use rt30h for snare?
Thanks
I brought the RT30 triggers but even tho I have stereo splitters I'm running into the issue of having both triggers 1/2 having the same sample come out even though I assign different ones to them. Is there a fix to this? Any help would be much appreciated!

@@Worshiponline seems I missed the update where the RT triggers are registered. I used to set it with a dual pad to split the triggers in rim and head. I’ll check it out today and update for audience convenience. Thanks for replying and God bless!
What about dynamics? Does it works with the triggers?
You can change the velocity on the triggers themselves for dynamics!
Thanks for sharing this. Question: how do I mix the real drums mics with the roland samples?
Have the same question!
Good question! That can be done on the triggers themselves, and in some case from FOH!
Hi! I recently started incorporating samples at my church with the drum kit and I’ve run into one small issue. With the snare, I’m a pretty big fan of rimshots for the volume and tone. When I started trying to use my Roland HR-30 for the snare sample, I noticed that my rimshots would sometimes “cancel” the snare sample from firing. Have you found this problem and/or have a workaround?
I’d really appreciate your feedback
In addition to that, do you pretty much lay off of doing cross stick, as the snare trigger will fire? Or do you actually utilize the "R" of the "HR" trigger?
Hey Gaige! In the SPDSX’s trigger settings you want to make sure you’ve loaded the preset that matches the trigger you’re using.
@@Worshiponline so I am using an Alesis Multistrike pad but it automatically detects that it is a dual sensor trigger so I dont have that issue

Soooo just a little update on my side..😊 I bought the triggers a year ago and play with them in church since then. I mostly use them as gates and this video made me curious how that "shit" works because it's a whole lot of effort to really incooperate those things in a real church environment. Randomly the Video just popped up again and I watched it again and decided, it's now time to buy the samplepack. I started a UA-cam Channel where I do worship drumming and I'm so pumped to set my spdsx up with those samples to enhance my drum sound for my next worship covers! Lots of love from Germany man you brought a whole big stone into rolling the last 1.5 years😂👍🔥

Is like Madness from MUSE! Top!
What snare drum you used in the first kit?
A 6.5″ x 14″ 1909 aluminum snare drum!
You guys that dont like it, dont buy the samples nor the triggers keep sounding mediocre. Even professional mixing engineers use drum replacement so why not to use that tool if you lack of a good drumset/drummer/acoustic space/mics/mic technique/mixing skills/ good mixer/ and good overall mixing a band thats some of the things to make a drummer sound good besides tunning.
You make a great point!
Is he running triggers through the SPD?

Is the SPD-SX a Necessity?
You can load these samples into any sample host!
Where can I buy those pizza boxes?
Hahaha 😂
Does the pack have cymbal samples as well?
Didn't look like it, and doubtful as there's no great way to trigger/replace cymbals. Cymbals gotta be real (or else, look for a top-end electronic kit/brain and cymbal triggers).

@@Worshiponline But as far as I can tell, the SPD-SX only accepts 2 dual-trigger inputs, so if he's using Y-cables to bring in 4 triggers, he's only getting single zone from each (thus the snare trigger doesn't necessarily need to be dual zone; it's not connecting to two inputs).
I LOVE sarcasm. :)
