Is there a certain channel the digitak needs to be on?

Double check video 1 getting started.
Your digitak can be assigned to any channel you'd like. However you need to route each zone accordingly 1-16 to talk to the channels in each zone or singular zone.

@ so each pad on the digitak has to be assigned to a different midi channel and one of those will take up one zone on the SL?
