What is a Disciple?

  • In the Mass Readings Explained video series for this week Dr. Pitre discusses, among other things, what it means to be a disciple.
He discusses the type of love that will be distinctive of his disciples: namely, agape -- sacrificial love. That is the supreme expression of love that will draw others to Jesus.
This love is the same type of love Jesus will express for us. And so, when Jesus calls his followers his disciples, he is really calling them his students -- and students imitate their masters in 1st Century Judaism.
Jesus isn't just calling his disciples to be believers but to be his students: Study what the master says, listen to what the master teaches, and to do what the master does.
Jesus' call for his disciples, therefore, goes well beyond merely believing in Jesus.

I write a weekly insert for our parish bulletin and these videos of Dr. Pitre's have become, for me, a great source of inspiration and foundational resource on which to build my writings. I don't always use these [videos], and in fact this is probably only about the third time I have. But the point is that the explanations of the underlying meanings of the texts are unparalleled in my experience. I hope and pray they will continue to post these videos for the edification of all who happen by.
Oh, and don't forget to "Like" the videos. At the time of my watching, there have already been 400 views and only 40 likes. I find it hard to believe that only 10% if viewers actually like, that is, get anything out of these videos.

Amen. Only takes a split second to "like" these and other such videos. It's the first thing I do.

I also hope Catholic Productions continues posting these videos. There's a lot of pretty good stuff on UA-cam, but I have to say Dr. Pitre has become my favorite (or at least tied with Dr. Hahn at the top).

Billy Graham once said, "Salvation is free, but discipleship costs us everything we have.
To be a true disciple, we follow Christ, to learn from Christ, to become like Christ so as to reflect Christ within our family and community. Discipleship was always meant to be primary focus of every Christian believer.

On the date of the apparitions of Mary in Fatima --- Mary, the model disciple and our Mother in Grace, pray for us and for Dr. Pitre! Please keep these videos coming, Dr Pitre. I have not seen a better, more accessible and more useful UA-cam video on discipleship: references to Scripture, Tradition, and reason in less than 7 minutes - Wow!

I reccomend for you guys to do a video on Sedevacantism in the future, because it is the biggest roadblock in my faith right now. I am sure it will help others as well. Their (MHFM) materials seem very convincing.

So many have been led to believe that all they must do is "believe" in Christ & they will be saved. They then go under the label Christian, while treating others poorly & living their lives more as the enemy, which confuses people & puts Christ in a bad light. Even the enemy "believes in Jesus", but he too lives as he so desires. We as disciples, need to work harder at clearing up this misunderstanding in the main stream.

How do you reach your conclusion? The real problem is with people who deny salvation by grace through faith. Sadly, people who preach against faith and boast of work based salvation... Oddly seem to have nothing to tell me when I ask what good works do they work?
I know a lot of Christians who never talk about their works, and live knowing salvation comes by the grace of God, through their faith. Yet I can see the fruits, their works that help the world. The enemy does not have faith in Jesus just because they recognize who he is.

@@br.m I reach the conclusion, because I fell into the trap of believing saved by grace alone, by belief. I "believed", studied, prayed, etc. for 40 years, but in that time I wasn't necessarily saved. I was often lost, far from Jesus. I didn't look like his sheep at all. During my judgement the prosecutor would've had so much evidence to show that I didn't belong to Christ at all & Christ may have very likely said something like "it's true, you said you were mine, but in reality I never knew you. If you knew me, you would've repented of your sins & followed me, how can I defend you when you led others to sin while trying to go under my name, leading them to astray?" I was only saved when I recognized my mistake, gave my whole life to Jesus & begged his forgiveness, was born again, entered by the Holy Spirit, eyes were opened, I was convicted/shown my sins, was taught & led out of my sins, was refined, tested, & taught to testify & teach others of him & these things. "Grace" refers to the fact that he has no real obligation to any of us to save us. He is God, he could make our lives completely miserable if he chose. His grace is about how he loves us (often undeservingly) & he wants relationship with us, he wants to lead us, to change us, to save us. He wants to lead us into redemption, which requires action on our behalf. We can't just "believe" in him, while continuing to ourselves play God, sinning & leading others to it, while believing we are his & saved by his grace, that's just foolishness & a lie that the world likes to spread to keep us from submitting to him & being redeemed.

@@nhartigan72 Okay so you still don't believe in Jesus. but you have taken a security blanket to wrap yourself in, handed to you by the enemy.
Hopefully you come around to your senses. Hopefully you figure out that believing is not as simple as you assumed it was.
It is not about saying you believe. It is about realizing you believe.
Then it all begins to make sense.
Hopefully you are saved from your unbelief, and come to true faith.
      Good luck!

@@br.m Actually I've seen Jesus, he's saved me. For 40 years I "believed" in him, but I didn't follow him. The night I gave him my life & was saved he gave me a vision, while fully awake. I was in hell on a cross facing my demons/sins. I saw Jesus on a cross in the middle of a storm. I begged him & he saved me. It happened 3 times, then I was set free, born again, just like he arose on the 3rd day. He showed me what I believe was his Book of Life, then showed that my life was mapped out & I would receive signs to help along the way, which has come true. He took me to the outside of heaven, which I declined to continue being a father & a disciple. Many in heaven celebrated the unselfish choice, then I was shown that I'd be cleaned up. The next day his Holy Spirit came upon me & began cleaning me up, leading me from my sins, teaching me, etc, so that I could be a better disciple testifying & teaching of him, along with warning others to not fall into the sins that I'd fallen into, as well as to not be foolish enough to just "believe" in him, but to leave their sins, lay down their lives & "follow" him. You can do what you like, including acting as condescending jerk who believes he knows everything about myself & Jesus, but I'd recommend considering what I've written. I know I certainly don't want my name blotted out of his Book of Life, which can happen to people, even to people who "believe". Peace out.

Disciples are man made beliefs off of Gods statement. In his case and words “false beliefs” Connotation: Usually made by people who disregard his exact words to describe a sense that “well this is somewhat okay”; just a bit off to approval.
