Captain Midnight (1942)
Captain Albright is an extremely skilled aviator better known as Captain Midnight, who is assigned to neutralize the sinister Ivan Shark, an evil enemy scientist who is bombing major American cities. Our hero leads the Secret Squadron, whose staff includes Chuck Ramsay who is Midnight's ward and Ichabod 'Icky' Mudd, the Squadron's chief mechanic. Shark has developed a highly efficient mercenary organization, being aided by his daughter Fury who is highly intelligent and second in command, Gardo the henchman and Fang, an Oriental ally. Unfortunately, Shark is after a new range finder invented by the altruistic scientist, John Edwards, whose beautiful daughter, Joyce, the villains attempt to capture to blackmail the inventor.
I love the way the girls runs, with those Little baby steps. Plus she has a two-tier scream. The whole series is very entertaining.
LOL! So true! If you look closely, in a couple of scenes, the bad girls shoes all of a sudden become "sling backs" (the style of shoe with the strap around the heel....like the ones "Screaming Joyce" wears throughout the entire series. Continuity wasn't always too important in these I guess. Lol!
Gotta love "Joyce"! She has a strong "push" when she fights (smart and tough broad) but her constant "screaming" is hilarious! Another thing I love about these old serials is that when the men fight, THEIR HATS NEVER FALL OFF! Lol! These are the best and the car chases and miniatures are awesome! 12 year olds of the period surely got their thrills from all of these. Thanks for posting this one as I've never seen it!
hats stay on when skydiving too
Thank You For posting These Videos . I absolutely love these old Crime/Sci Fi shows of the 1930s-40's , they're so Intriguing !!!. ( lol, Rather watch this , then present day TV )..
Your so right!!!
we go to their home channel to get more. Just to let you know, I am 77 yrs. old. They don't make them like this anymore.
Same here.
Ivan Shark with all his wizardry sure wasn't much of an electrician; every time he threw a switch, the sparks would fly!
Wow! Vintage aircraft in spades! A Stinson Model A tri-motor, a Ryan STA and a Northrop Gamma all in the first 20 minutes!
All in all not a bad movie serial. One of the better ones that were made in the 1940's.
So Captain Midnight introduces himself to the captured henchman and then minutes later when he confronts bunch of goons, one of them calls him Captain Midnight.lol.
I live for series like these to watch. Thanks AAP.
I loved the serials. One of our two cinemas screened them when I was a kid in the early fifties.
As much as I love the serials they also make me depressed. A brutal reminder of how far we have fallen as a society.
Thanks for sharing this I appreciate your troubles and time to upload it for us to enjoy
Good Super-Hero, good villain and henchmen plus two very appealing female actresses, especially the good one.
This is a top of the line serial of the 1940's.
Captain Midnight needed a better agent. That disguise(?) is just BAD!
A few minutes into episode 1, I spot Ray Teal. Ray was the sheriff in Bonanza. He’s got a list of movie credits dating back into the 30’s.
In doing my research on the series, I see that Shelly Fabres(spelling?) was in a few episodes. Not only did she go onto play Donna Reed’s daughter in the Donna Reed Show, but she had a hit record Johnny Angel. And now you know the rest of the story.
That's not "the rest of the story." What about "Coach"?
I even had the Captain Midnight patch after sending in Ovaltine (their sponsor) labels. I loved this series as a kid. Many thanks for uploading.
That's awesome! If it's true.
Yes, me too. Ovaltine's taste wasn't perfect, but I drank it because of Captain Midnight.
I used Ovaltine on my ice cream 🍨 pretty good that way
@@jerryjohnson8485 Sounds good!
@@jerryjohnson8485 me too...but Nesquik was better😁
At 2:21:24: "My only weakness is the helpless FOOLS who serve me!" LOLLOL!
This is one of the better serials.....love those old cars with the big fenders and headlights...thanks much...
The industry should bring back serials to improve business during covid
I like big headlights, too. ; -)
I just love these serial ....I can't imagine waiting a whole week to see the next chapter like they used to have to wait for.....as they called them cliffhangers .....
The worst thing was you'd have to go to the movies EVERY SATURDAY for 12 to 15 weeks straight (pretty much impossible) or you'd miss some of the story. Especially frustrating if you missed the last episode and never knew how it all turned out. It turned me into an OCD mess. 😊
The intro and outro voice announcer is marvelous! I recognize his voice from other Columbia serials.....
Knox Manning was his name.
@@RRW1982 Thanks- HE was a pro!
@@asgaard636 Imagine if contemporary TV programs employed narrators, or better still, 'intertitles' providing synopses of what happened and/or what might be about to happen!
Yesss! Joyce is the best screamer ever!
1:58:11 : - "Shut her up!
- Shut up!"
😂😂😂
I'm with you! Screaming isn't always going to help you! It makes you sound weak! Defend yourself the best that you can!
For a moment I thought the mad bomber at the start was Captain Midnight. "There's crime happening in those buildings. Call it a hunch. Better blow them up, to be safe." But we get a good old serial that solves things with fist fights and chases.
The bad guy's objective is too petty to sustain the whole run. We don't get to know what he's about or what his larger insane plans are. Devolves into taking turns kidnapping each other.
But lots of cool cars, planes, suit and hat wearing.
Hmmm...what can we do with all this stock footage and old comic book plots? I KNOW!!!
Still, this has a very nostalgic charm to it. Thanks for posting!
This is far better than the crap that Hollyweird is putting out today.
@@leelarson107 That's for sure. I paid FULL PRICE to see The Rise of Skywalker. Except for Adam Driver, it was a totally unwatchable train wreck.
The Sharks have a unique father-daughter relationship. Nicely affectionate for a pair of villains.
LOL.
Chapter 4: it just so happens that 4 policemen in 1 car are out in the country. Probably in search of donuts!
Great Series, Joyce has to be the best screamer 😲 I have ever heard! Cot. Midnight almost sounds comedic!
The cops are more like the keystone cops.😂😅
thanks for posting love this old stuff
Sheriff Roy Coffee must have left Virginia City to become bad guy #8.
Thanks, I hadn't noticed that!
WONDER TV SERIES,AMERICAN MOVIE'S #1 FOREVER
I like the string on the secret door 😁
I like that no one in these serials EVER gets hurt doing a combat roll out of a fast moving car.
Just goes to show how it pays to become excellent at tumbling and other basic gymnastic skills, and for the production crew to have good film editors as well as a list of stunt-workers who can fill in when someone is recovering from a jump or a fall!
please put a time stamp on this scene 👍
Captain Midnight, played by Dave O'Brien also played the fall guy in the old Pete Smith Specials.
You must be old like me. Pete Smith did some really neat stuff. Tragically, he committed suicide in the 70s by jumping off the roof of an asylum.
Loved this when I was a kid!
Thanks! This is great.
"Everybody was kung fu fighting...." sums up every chapter in this otherwise existentially worthy film which seems to be looking for a reasonable plot, a meaningful antagonist, and a minimally logical theme. Oh well...at least Dave O'Brien isn't hotboxing a joint and banging on a cheap piano in a speak. Thanks again for archiving and posting.
I love documentaries. Thanks AAP.
I loved reading all these great comments!
I keep waiting for the head bad guy to break down in tears.
Wow he took em all down my kinda guy he ain't no peneata😎😄
This is superb Art 🖼️🍄💃🏻🥷🏻🤺🤺☝️👌
Captain midnight his a greatest pilot aand is a hero in world war 2 captain midnight stop greatst villan shark
Major Steel is old enough to be a general. Luana Walters, who played Fury Shark, later played Lara, Superman’s birth mother, in the 1948 movie serial. She had a tragic life. Her husband, actor Max Hoffman Jr., died at 42 in 1945. She was childless and she never remarried. Her career dissolved and she died due to alcoholism at 50 in 1963.
im looking from argentine!!!!! thanks!!!!!
That's Entertainment! :-)
If I didn't know better (and I don't), I'd swear Ed Wood wrote some of the dialog.
Ha! These are better!

Pure gold 🎉😂
🥰💘😎great of 📺shows they are great 😊
Stars David O’Brien and Dorothy Short were married from 1936 until they divorced in 1954. They had two children.
He probably couldn't stand her screaming any longer.
Please bring more serials on you tube
Get way of here blow up next week at this chapter 14 scourges revenge another thrilling episode of captain midnight a Columbia serial
Excellent
Great film except for that girl's constant, obnoxious screaming.
That probably added to her getting the part.
If girls these days were attacked and screamed like that the perpetrators would run like hell.
@@colinmcginn977 Maybe they could use a recording of her screaming as a car alarm.
Yeah, with girls there's no "OFF" switch.
@@perniciouspete4986 Don't let your wife or girlfriend see that comment. Lol
How many times did Midnight catch a bad guy, but then he escapes? And how many times did Midnight get captured, then escape. That seemed to be the whole plot of the series.
OMG! YOU BROKE THE CODE!
They have a gun in their hand but they fistfight instead lol. Also what's up with the women?? They just stand there and scream and faint.
That's what women do best. Then they get up and say that they handled the whole thing by themselves.
@@leelarson107 Fainting is a skill, under-appreciated by many. Screaming as well, but too often the screaming in these serials is shrill and only at one decibel level. Imagine Roy Barcroft getting saddled with a role that required him to scream...
Take me home major steel
There is also a "Department of Governmental Intelligence"
It's a one man operation 🤣
Thank you for posting this great series 🙂
Government intelligence? What's that?
@@leelarson107 It's an oxymoron.

Gold Movie Serial Number 11.
Dorothy Short plus Luana Walters.
At 3:57:36, Craven ('Shark') gives directions to his daughter as they are alone for a moment - all of a sudden, his temperament is completely calm and normal. The character of Ivan Shark is so hyper-melodramatic, only because Craven could keep that balance of ludicrous insanity focused,
and then, in an instant, become so much more calm. He definitely had skills - nice that he had outlets for them, too!
How many aircraft does he crash every week?

Hey, gimme a break. I'm doing the best I can.
Yes, galooteous maximus.
Not this one but I have seen other serials in Fiji when I was small. We were more interested in seeing what happen next in sequence chapter rather than main feature movie to follow serial.
Capture major Ivan shark fly in
Why wasn't an 2nd serial made, captain "high noon"
Ewggh! Bad! Yuck! Can I use it?
Horrible, and I love and will use this!!
A sequel was planned called "Captain a Quarter Past Two," but it never got off the ground.
Captain midnight is a superhero is costume in world war 2
Fate is sealed
The only problem with this is it's being over 4 & a half hours. I guess I'll have to download it and cut it up into smaller bits so I not sitting so long to watch it. :-(
the kids who watched this in the movie theaters in the '40's only got 30 min. a week...took the whole summer to see the series...
@@briancrane7634 True but it could be broken down into smaller lengths for those of us that can't sit in one place for the over 4.5 hours that all combined episodes take up and with youtube it's not always easy to just pick up where you left off.
@@ocianaigh1 My husband and myself just watch an hr. every night.
In Australia, Captain Midnight was renamed to “Jet Jackson” because in Australia in the 1800’s we had an outlaw known as Captain Midnight who operated in NSW. This is just one of the very few times we did not “bend over” to our colonial, American and Asian masters. This is 2023 “stand up Australia!”
Strange how the bad guy has a really nice daughter...
She's beautiful but definitely not "nice."
Tarps get business captain midnight
Around 1:57:00 it looks like an episode of "Draw Back in Surprise Theater". You can positively HEAR the gasps.
Captain midnight Is hideout in house care with is henchmen captain midnight fight crime captain midnight is smart then ivan shark is durty villan god to get is suol in to hell ware living demon😈👿
Captain midnighit fight for justice to stop villan ivan shark
Hero's are supposed to take the fight scenes over and not get beat up every time!in comics it's good to see that they put a great fight, but these films that's the only downside that bug me so much!!
I know. He could have shot them several times, but chose to fight and get knocked out, instead.
That`s why they are called cliffhanger serials to see if the good guy can get out of the jam next week.
Ready to make he rival scarfice to capture Ivan captain midnight the himself throws himself intro the hands of the master criminalal but shark eludes capture and midnight fate
Chapter 13 death in the cockpit
Now you talking headquarters
Major steel
This story is set in 1942. If Captain Midnight is such a great pilot, why isn't he in an American fighter squadron overseas shooting down Axis planes? Also, I didn't realize this country had so many traitors during WWII. The movies and serials of the day were full of them.
Not to mention that evil Ivan Shark found potential as a bomber in the funky old Stinson Model A trimotor. Only 30 or 31 of these 8 passenger feeder airliners were ever built, yet a restored and flyable example still exists today! Great ground, taxiing and in-flight footage of the aircraft in this flick, though the cockpit/interior mock-up is unaccountably dreadful!
WWII had multiple theaters. One of them was the homeland. He did not need to be a Mil Pilot. he was needed on the homefront.
Not all pilots and NAZI(s) were in the European theater. Many NAZI agents were located in the Home land. In fact, the Mafia worked with the Govt (even though the Mafia hated the Govt, ti hated NAZI(s) more and could not tolerate NAZI spies. The Longshoremen would identify a NAZI spy and the Mafia would then "take appropriate actions".
@@davidgiles4681 There was no secret air armada of planes manned by traitors or German agents bombing the US. This guy was supposed to be a super-pilot. He would have been sent overseas or at least used as a flight instructor.
@@rimshot2270 It was a serial to boost the Patriotic feelings of America. The bad guys were meant to be menancing and dangerous. That does not mean that German bad guys did not exist.
That does not mean that German efforts to get even the most mundane information and turn it into intel.
Captain Midnight was a domestic hero. He was meant to boost the concept that the homeland is also a battle field and theater. It does not have to have armadas of physical planes. Spies and sabateurs did exist the the 40's on the domestic front.
I get a big kick out of people who expect absolute logic out of fictitious stories/movies.

How many times do good/bad guys jump into each other's cars and the keys must be in the ignition--how convenient!
Cars in the 1930s had a starter peddle on the floor. The car ignition key was introduced by Chrysler in 1949. None of the cars in this show would have required a key to start.
@@AtomicAgePictures Thank you for the information. However, the practice continued in movies and TV even after the ignition key became standard. Another cliche I hate is when the hero or heroine jumps into their car to escape pursuing villains on their heels and all of a sudden, the car that has been running perfectly up to now won't start.
@@rimshot2270 yes but of course that's because like the seatbelts most Americans didn't use the keys the way they were intended to be used it first. Most people just left the key in the ignition because they were used to getting in and hitting the starter pedal and not having to worry about hanging onto a key. When car theft started to rise in the late 1950s and early 60s there were television campaigns reminding people to lock their cars and remove the key.
@@AtomicAgePictures Interesting, but I can't believe it was as common as movies and TV made it out to be. Oddly enough, cars have gone back to the starter pedal or button. The difference is now the car must be in proximity to the remote control for it to work. I remember those ads. In the 60s, they used the silly line, "Don't help a good boy go bad," because so many teenagers were stealing cars and joyriding. If the kid was so good, why was he stealing cars?
@@AtomicAgePictures Correct. My parents never took the keys out of their cars unless they were in a "big" city like Tulsa!
