Been on Holiday to Mull and was blown away by how stunningly beautiful it is. I've never felt more comfortable in my life as that I did on Mull. Its somewhere I feel I'm meant to be.
My family are from skye - my grandfather grew up there walking to school with no shoes, and the family moved to Manchester after falling out with the ferry boatman. I've been considering a return.
This would be about 55K in American dollars. Not a whole lot when considering moving costs, building a place or having to fix one up (more expensive on an island), length of time to search for another job, etc etc. And what about the internet? I hope the people who sign up for this are able to make it happen
most islands now have fast speed internet... but you are right costs on an island are almost doubled to doing soemthing on mainland..so if this scheme had gone ahead the amount offered wuld have done little...it certainly wouldnt buy you the land.
If "internet" is one of the first things you're worried about...this clearly isn't for you. Also, 50,000 is plenty to a savvy person that doesn't need much to survive and be happy with the little things. This shit sounds dope, and if I wasn't leaving the states for Switzerland, I would jump on this in a heart beat.
Such a shame it was scrapped,I’d have loved to move to the Isle of Arran,my Nan was evacuated there during ww2 and said the people there were fantastic, like a second family.
@Ralph Reilly Well that's a very disparaging view of the people of Arran. Unfortunately the island is being turned into little Britain with almost half the houses as second homes lying empty most of the year. Hopefully we'll see legislation similar to Norway's prevent this happening and the Islands can retain their young people.
@Ralph Reilly 👈 Hilariously ignorant and offensive. 'component'?? A country with its own laws, culture and history is not a *****ING COMPONENT! 'Development of the Empire? What freaking Empire? Quite sad really.
The people there now aren't the ones then. There's about three times the population there was in the 60/70s. Mainly English retired civil servants and polis from what I can see.
When you go to the chip shop on Arran when they ask if you want salt on your haggis sausage and chips say NO thanks as they literally pour the stuff on ! I loved the Isle of Arran such a beautiful place . I spent 10 days there camping in 1993 .
There was a scheme to get people into crofting in the Shetland Islands but it was still too expensive for people to go and start up. Depopulation has always been a problem on Scottish islands. Better pay, easier jobs, less hours, more social contact in mainland towns.
I don't know what I would do without Internet access, or poor Internet access. The Internet is a huge part of my life. Even for my dad, who is in his 70s, would struggle without his Internet. If his Internet is not working, I am the first person he complains to about it!!! 😂
If only I had been forty years younger. I would have jumped at the chance back then if I had known about it. To have made a complete break away from my control freak of a dad and brother. As for what I would have done for a living. Possible landscape artist. As well as being a small farmer.

The key findings from the analysis of the consultation suggested that island communities do not support the proposed Islands Bond and as a direct result of that feedback, the scheme will not be taken forward.

No this won't happen, at least not in my home island of Shetland. It's a stupid idea, it'll only lead to raised inflation in our local economy. Something which the modern day politician seems to do with ease. If they want to help increase the populations of our islands then they should be doing all they can to encourage young couples to be able to set up a home, live their lives in as little debt as possible and start their own children. Kinda like the old fashioned way. Fund affordable logistics in order to get goods into the islands to minimise increased costs. So many things that they should be doing to help islands survive but they don't. If want to move to an island then fund it yourself, like what everyone else has done up to now.

I was confused by images in intro, is one from Northern Spain?
No .. 50000 is not enough to start with .. it needs at least 150000 to get the necessary stuff for a family to survive on an island .. you need schools, electricity, water, gas, heat, internet .. etc.
Scotland gets terribly cold in the winter. Colder than London.
When they pay £50.000 pound every year forever its ok.
I'll enjoy the stay to make art and sometimes some holidays 🤗
If you don't use to climate you won't last long looks good on tv but reality every day live is different thear is reson declining of population people living because of rough climate.
