My Studio II arrives tomorrow. I’ll be reviewing and speaking about the overall differences. Next speaker I invest in will definitely be the Grand Avant Garde though. You are correct. It is superb. You get a lot of the Gershman magic with the Studio II, but you’re right the tower is also special.
Awesome review, Sean! With great useful info, contents and comparison! By far the more useful review format than most professional reviews out there. Great work
Great review. It is great to hear about a speaker I haven’t heard about. Now I bet more reviewers are going to want to get their hands on them because of your review.
Thanks Zero! Great review on a speaker not hyped in the US market! Sounds like this speaker will make you want to fire it up when you get out of bed in the morning. A very sensitive time for your ears and not a lot of speakers make you want to hear them first thing in the am.
Def. not for everyone, but those who 'get it' will likely love em'. Edit: It looks like Next Best Thing Studio just did a tour of the Gershman facility. It's pretty cool, especially since it verifies that their studio isn't some dilapidated left-over from the 80's. You can check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/IoB3awJsNus/v-deo.html
Amazing content and bonus section as always. Thank you. Though I have noticed some of the segways in the video were louder than other sections. You can mitigate that by doing Loudness Normalization just before exporting the video. Industry standard in broadcast is around -23 to -24 LUFS. UA-cam or other streaming services are around -16 LUFS. But you can experiment to what you prefer.
Sneaky Sean, you left the price till the end. But I appreciate it, I would have been biased by the price. But listening through convinced me it has its value. I think you've done a great job in the equipment matching section. I'm quite sure the rest will start to copy you. It also show the depth of your knowledge. At the same time it gave me an idea of what the speaker is about, when you match it with products that I know. Thank YOU Sean. As usual, I love the comparisons, though I've yet to own a Totem. One day - I will.
Thank you, thank you! I KNOW this sound you describe. Your take so accurately and acutely, mind you, defines my previous experiences with the "listening within" aspect of recorded musical consumption - pithily denied me for so long on my journey toward the finest recorded music implementations. A Natural sounding transducer, specifically engineered to require the least mental exersion toward it's material presence as an item reproducing a signal. Changed everything regarding what I felt even possible through audiophile pursuits. So compelling, so desirable and greedily coveted this sound is upon experiencing it over time that I immediately focused on my power upgrade path to maximize this mental euphoria it induces to all listeners at a core level. It tickles more neurons than any drug could. Your music listening becomes a craven delicacy, at once liberated and sublime. Buy.
If it allows you to listen to Anthony Kiedis vocals for hours on end, these aren't just good speakers they're some kind of "magic boxes"!😄 Thanks for the great review as always.👍
The bonus section comparing products is the best part of the review for me. The adjectives in the rest of the review do not necessarily have an absolute definition, so it is only relative to other products that the characteristics of a product can be understood.
I heard the Grand Studio II at the Toronto Audio Fest. I was not familiar with the recordings but what I heard was certainly impressive. Will spend more time with them next show.
Great review. Your friend Thomas said you’d be reviewing the Gershman Grand Avant Gardes at some point. Any chance that review is coming out soon? Thanks.
Really good review. Again I feel like I get a deeper understanding of what a speaker is about from you having not heard them than other reviewers. I will say these look much nicer than the Tekton DI. I personally think the DI are pretty ugly in the standard finish. And if you get the nicer finish they cost $1k more.
No mention of powering these with PS Audio M700's which you reviewed last year ? Nice Speakers and I just watched Thomas' review of the Gershman Grand Avante Guard Speakers. Way over my Budget but I'm sure they are worth every penny.
The Grands are well worth it but you should really give serious consideration to the Studio ll,, they are incredibly well, worth it for a much lower price.
This brings back memories. I live in Toronto and got to meet the Gershmans at the Toronto Audio Video Entertainment Show (TAVES) at least two different years, perhaps 2014 and 2015. Both years Mr. Gershman was with his very lovely wife who was assisting. He was very keen about his innovations in speaker design. He was also a very keen observer of people's response to his speakers. Both years I got to hear his Black Swan tower speakers. Breath taking sound. His room typically had a very enrapt, hushed audience. I know because I kept returning to it! Well one of these times I got to hear on the Black Swans a singer I had never heard before : Eva Cassidy, and the song was Fields of Gold. Let's just say I was a teary mess, and I'm glad the lighting in the room was somewhat subdued lol. Thanks for the review!
You can start some consulting services on hifi solutions who looking for great sound , how to match speakers and equipment by understanding client needs and clarifying wrong expectations etc .
It's not about the components its about how they work together and either the X-over. If you change any one of these components, (replace them with a component that is 10 times the price, or even one that is from your other favorite speaker, it will loose the magic ). It will not sound as wonderful.
Nice review. However, I totally disagree with your comparisons. I believe a more accurate comparison would be the Unison Research Max Mini. Possibly using their Triode 25 dac/ amp. Glad to hear you are staying on. You are the most polished, articulate and succinct. Your reviews are pleasurably refreshing. Hope you will consider sound comparisons in the future. But you do successfully convey the essence of the products with your analytically descriptive, energetic style.
Sound like excellent speakers, as long as you're sitting down, and in the "sweet spot", where some of us like to move around while listening and/or have others sitting around the room. How's off-axis performance?
SEAN- Please note in your vids, when possible, how the speakers sound with TUBES. I have a high-end, resolving all tube rig and it seems most of the better UA-cam reviewers (you’re in the top 5) demo speakers with SS components. For what it’s worth... Thanks Thanks

Hi Sean!! What a great review avain!! Keep up your great work. Just wondering have you ever had a chance to hear famous Franco Serblin Accordo?! And have you thought to review Tekton Encore?! As I would love to hear your point of view how Encore vs. Double Impact compare. I have heard DIs multiple occasions in my friend's house, but somehow even I like DIs they do not have toe tapping and musical engagement factor as Franco Serblin Accordo. But I've heard the many of people saying that Tekton Encore is much more musically engaging than DI or Moab. Therefore I would highly appreciate your review for Encore speakers. As I live in Scandinavia it will be hard to take advantage of trial period. Just hoping to see a review of yours in the near future, that would help me to make a decision... Should I go Gershman or Tekton Encore direction. Anyhow Sean it's been always a huge pleasure to watch your reviews...
More nutrallity, much better Lowe bass and musicality. It's a sound that you can listen for hours without getting fatigue, you can enjoy any kind of music.
Was loving the idea of putting the Studio 2 on my shortlist of book shelf speakers. Then, read a post from someone who bought them and described how the quality control and overall finished product was appalling. With loose wires and all kinds of cheap shortcuts in the speaker itself , after opening it up. One thing you have to bear in mind is the Gershman Acoustics dealer network is few and far between. Hard to know to make of this company, the Studio 2 from limited listening in YT is quite good. Perhaps the recording studio is where they bring in their revenue with the speaker making a secondary project. Having just one person constructing the speakers as the Gershmans have mentioned can increase the hit and miss potential of the end products. In any event , they will need to prove themselves more before going ahead to put down the hard earned cash for any of their speakers.
Thanks Sean. I'm they sound great but I'm disappointed that their website has no technical info. I'm interested in the crossover point since it has an 8"woofer and I'd like to see measured responses. The more the better! I also hate those gold screws mainly because they look like the ones I bought at Home Depot to build my fence. Just my 2 cents.
The website is dated even by late 90's standards. It was one of the first things I noted behind the scenes. Hope they can step up their game in that regard.
@@jamesbrotherton5487 Listen, you specifically mentioned the 8" woofer because you know that size is not optimal to transition to a 1" tweeter. You totally misunderstood my point regarding anomalies. At 4k a pair I can't afford to look at them. Much less purchase them. I have a pair of D-11's that sound fantastic. Picked them up for $500 for the pair refurbished from Acc4less. Love that place.
Try the monitor gold 100 2 way bookshelf for 3k they are amazing and in this same class but will have the quicker more detailed bass.. They won the EISA best product for bokshelf speaker in 2019.I have the gold 200's...they are a 3 way and under 50 pound tower for 5k...I got them for 4500. check out monitors site they are amazing. The EISA association concluded: "Building on decades of success in speakers both small and large, the Monitor Audio Gold 100 is a bookshelf/standmount design with a big sound that belies its compact dimensions. Featuring the latest version of the company’s C-CAM driver technology, using a composite ceramic/aluminium magnesium construction for lightness and rigidity, it sounds fast, detailed and powerful, with excellent integration between the drive units, and surprisingly deep and tuneful bass. Add in Monitor Audio’s meticulous construction and beautiful choice of finishes, and you have a truly superior compact speaker design."
The Monitor Audio Gold 100 you have only go down to 40Hz low frequency. The Gershman Studio II go all the way down to 25Hz low frequency. They crush the Monitor Audio Gold 100 with regards to quick detailed and low end bass!
I was with you until the $3,700 price. To audiophiles, that is not much money, but to me it is. I bought a pair of ML towers for $2200, and that was plenty in my opinion.
Great review on the Studio 2 speakers. I'm interested in getting a pair, however you recomend pairing with an amp that can deliver lot more power than my Naim Unity Nova rating at 80 watts per chanel. Although, I believe Naim rates their amps differently, and perhaps relying more on the quality of delivery which Naim does so well. So....., what would be your thoughts? Is there another explanation, where we could say the Studio-2 speakers would perform well with the Naim Nova? Many thanks.
I haven't heard a set of Gershman in several years , they had a model called the X1 back in the day , I loved em. Glad but not surprised you enjoyed em.
If I were in this to get the clicks, I'd shut down Zero Fidelity and focus more on filming videos of cute animals. :D Love exotic hi-fi that sounds good.
how nice with a not so well known brand and sealed cabinet is cherry on top :) these would be on my wishlist if i had a bigger room. Gallo Acoustic Strada 2 is also an interesting speaker, bass is not important in main speakers, subwoofers completes a hifi system, also sealed of course.

At 4k a pair I can't afford to look at them. Much less purchase them. I have a pair of D-11's that sound fantastic. Picked them up for $500 for the pair refurbished from Acc4less. Love that place.
$4000??? Too spicy for me!
$$$$$

Try the monitor gold 100 2 way bookshelf for 3k they are amazing and in this same class but will have the quicker more detailed bass.. They won the EISA best product for bokshelf speaker in 2019.I have the gold 200's...they are a 3 way and under 50 pound tower for 5k...I got them for 4500. check out monitors site they are amazing. The EISA association concluded:
"Building on decades of success in speakers both small and large, the Monitor Audio Gold 100 is a bookshelf/standmount design with a big sound that belies its compact dimensions.
No waveguide.
The wofer they use looks like dayton audio rss210 ho
It is a custom made woofer. Many woofers look alike, it's a woofer.
I was with you until the $3,700 price. To audiophiles, that is not much money, but to me it is. I bought a pair of ML towers for $2200, and that was plenty in my opinion.
.
Would love to hear them... but no, because Europe.
Yup... :(
There are dealers in Europe please contact Gershman Acoustics for more info.
I see your Europe and raise you.....New Zealand.
@@scubalbany NZ, you can buy directly from Gershman
@@ofragershman9390 Thank you.
неужели винты нельзя было утопить? ну вроде мелочь а глаз колет
woofer looks like Dayton audio
Maybe this brand should rather focus on making subwoofer. 😎
The drivers are not even flush mounted in the baffle🙄
Lost me at "you need to have $2000 or more...." (exit)
I would replace the screws immediatly for black ones, very ugly looking, dont know about the sound!
You talk TOO FAST
I bet the woofer has a hell of a motor-structure , Looks like a BMF !!I like the looks it makes a statement ! Thanks Sean !
I just read about Gershman floor speakers. Glad you are covering this company. Great review.
Thanks!
One of your best reviews yet.
Cheers!
Dude you got me very intrested in these canadians. Great review as always. To quote a great Canadian "Keep On Rockin' In The Free World" my friend.
Hope you can check em' out!
i first heard of gershman acoustics around '05 when they introduced their then flagship speaker the black swan
Good review Sean.
Heard the Gershman Posh at RMAF 2018 and they were spectacular
Sweet!
I haven't heard a set of Gershman in several years , they had a model called the X1 back in the day , I loved em. Glad but not surprised you enjoyed em.
#1 reviewer .
Aww.. :)
really glad to see you review some of their speakers, not a brand you get a lot of exposure to but I am told they are musically pleasing.
If I were in this to get the clicks, I'd shut down Zero Fidelity and focus more on filming videos of cute animals. :D Love exotic hi-fi that sounds good.
I think my bryston amplifier would be perfect for them
Yes, Bryston is perfect for it.
Yup!
And how about Mark levinson?
@@theomindschrddr7983 Bryston is like the poor man's Mark Levinson
@@pjo1964 but for the money very good
how nice with a not so well known brand and sealed cabinet is cherry on top :)
these would be on my wishlist if i had a bigger room. Gallo Acoustic Strada 2 is also an interesting speaker, bass is not important in main speakers, subwoofers completes a hifi system, also sealed of course.
Or you could simply double down on the low-end fun!
yes indeed :)
Alluring, indeed.
