This week, Chris, Jordan, and Jaron are joined by filmmaker Levi Holwell to discuss documentary filmmaking and all of the details that go into a successful production. But before that, the four talk about the biggest camera ever made, Nikon's huge new camera robot, and how despite getting a new firmware update last week, Sony didn't give filmmakers everything they were looking for.

I totally agree with Chris about fishing, I used to have those fun time fishing with my grandfather back when he was still there in their friend's garden, this is so calming and disconnecting from the busy routine. My current meditation is about landscape photography now: near waterfalls, in the mud, sunsets, in a forest. Connecting with nature is so good
Beautiful chemistry guys. Great friendly flow. Enjoyed it. Thanks!
It's always a pleasure to listen to your podcast. I really enjoy all of your thoughts on photography/filmmaking and all the other things that get thrown in. Cheers to Jordan for recommending a complementary channel, I will give Tyler's podcast a listen.
I was very touched by your podcast from last week and Jaron's story, thanks for sharing with us. What was shared during that podcast and to some degree in today's as well, made me rethink the importance of printing (my work) and as a business, encouraging my wedding clients to have albums made, even if it's not through me. I find it difficult to sell wedding albums as an add-on, despite their quality and tangible nature.
Thanks for your videos, look forward to the next ones, Nico
Finally got that guest! You'll love blue moon and pro photo is great for video gear as well. Quickest gaff tape/ tripod plate stop in town!
Oh and shutterbug has a few shops around the metro. St. Johns is always a drive lol.
Levi is the best.
This Levi guy is great! Pls have him on more. It’s camera world’s Brady bunch
Fantastic guest!
I would love to see a video comparing black and white film to monochrome digital photography. Impractical? Yes. Awesome? Also yes. It kills me that only Pentax and Leica really focus on monochrome photography (although the Zf has that cool jpeg mode switch)
The best coffee is,... MINE!. I have it down to a science. A blend or two or three. I EXACTLY measure everything. MINE! MINE! 🤪
Nikon does a really good job with the quality of the software releases for firmware updates. They have the fewest bugs and the biggest features of all manufacturers.
I mean… you have to literally forget entire generations of camera updates for this to be true. Even the Z7 had an issue with firmware bricking cameras. But it goes all the way back to the D810.
Nikon has its moment of being great, and they have been on a roll recently, but they don’t exactly have a spotless quality control track record lol
Hopefully they can keep their current hot streak alive
Yeah… no… Nikon is great! Don’t get me wrong! But firmware updates is not in the top 50 things I think about when talking about Nikon
I’m amazed that you own and update cameras from all manufacturers often enough to make this statement
Unless you have a Z7II like me 😢 Still love my cameras though
Weird cinema robot fact (possibly apocryphal): The first use of a computer controlled camera was apparently the opening slow zoom in The Godfather, it was too slow to do smoothly by hand.
So the LLST will be in Chile, but not in the Atacama desert, that’s interesting, they have lots of other observatories in the desert.
And I can’t recommend enough to visit the Atacama desert, San Pedro and the telescopes there, the landscape and the night sky are from another planet! (Disclaimer, I’m Chilean so I’m biased)
Caffe Rhiannon at Crosshands, West Wales has great milky coffee. They only do the one type and my wife doesn’t like it but I love it. McDonalds in the UK, their coffee varies, not just between outlets but in single outlets, as does their hot chocolate, indicating poor quality control of their gloppa-gloppa dispensing machinery.
Thanks for another nice podcast! Some cameras have a nice concept, but are poorly designed and bad in use. I still like the general thought behind the Canon XC-10, as an all-in-one compact video camera. I wouldn't mind if they make one again; full frame, fixed aperture 20-70mm f2.8, parfocal and no focus breathing, built-in stabilization and ND filters, good EVF and rear screen, good audio options. Could still be a real winner.
Same that I still like the concept of the DJI Osmo Pro, which was also a headache in use. How cool would it be if DJI revamped this camera on the basis of the Ronin 4D, with a Super 35 or Full Frame sensor, and the 4D's stability and sensors? Like an Osmo Pocket 3 on steroids, with interchangeable lenses. I think it could give conventional cameras a run for their money if executed well!
St Johns is far? I even looked for a house there in the 90's (never did move out of NW Portland though.) I guess I'm walking distance to Pro Photo Supply but it's weird that no one mentions Advanced Camera Repair on Beaverton-Hillsdale. Maybe they're not the place I remember.
Would love to see Levi’s film in the US. How about some sort of retail DVD distribution?
You gotta love these guys
1:20:40 I wish there were more metering settings that weren't stuck in the film days so it would be easy to properly expose. For example, what proportion of the highlights am I okay with clipping? Anyway, I usually do the opposite - use the B&W mode to focus on luminance while composing, regarless of if the final image will be in color or not
Tuscany trip ftw! Florence is fine for a few days however I'd head out of town, lots of beautiful scenery and small towns to discover. Also if you get the chance, head to the ocean, just a couple hours train ride away. Italy is the best!
The ocean is more like a three hour FLIGHT from Italy.
Can we get a bokeh test on this new camera? Oh and don’t forget to check the loca!
Thanks as always for brightening my Thursday morning (Australia)
What is the equivalent 35mm focal length of the telescope device?
22:45 not sure if it’s been pointed out by anyone else but the ZV-E line is definitely in the Alpha series! They have the “a” logo on them and the product pages say “Alpha ZV-E…”
Kinda the same way the NEX series back in the day was Alpha NEX and has the Alpha logo on it.
For the LSST team: How are they maintaining the image plane in tolerance for all the imaging sensors to account for thermal expansion and general movements due to the whole telescope slewing to target?
In the U.K. the Burger King's with the newer Coffee machines do a really nice Flat White!
For a camera that shoots 3,200-megapixels how big is the file size?
what is the power consumption of the Camera? How warm does it get? how is the camera cooled?
Funny how this video releases 15 minutes after Panasonic announces the new Firmware for the S5ii/x making Sonys new firmware look like a joke
I mean, not really though, right? S5IIX update is sick, but this a7s III update was massive.
Most of the Panasonic update the Sony already had for years (cloud, proxies, stabilization enhancements). But I agree it’s very big to see proxies getting added and improving the AF on the S5IIX even if it’s relatively minor compared to the massive Sony update.
But to be fair, Panasonic is at least not taking 3 years to update their S5IIX and that new shutter mode sounds interesting and I’m sure the image stabilization will blow away Sony’s as usual. I guess we will find out on the 22nd.
@@fofopho Sonys IS and Panasonic IS are two different beats… Sonys IS works… while Panasonics already way too good IS gets improvements… also the Panasonic Firmware is them adopting new features available on newer cameras to “older” models… brands usually don’t do that, especially not in mayor ways… especially not shortly before the S1ii will be announced…
Especially considering Panasonic offers all these features in a hybrid camera rather than just a video camera with no EVF. It is also nice to get these features on a camera I paid $1,300 for new, while my Sony Camera that they still sell for $3,000 doesn't have most of these features, and won't get any of them.
Well, Panasonic is a joke so at least they got better firmware.
@@m4rcin847 is it? it's the defacto standard for professional video recording, has the second largest lens line up of any mount (M43 having the biggest which is another brand of Panasonic...), comparably it has the cheapest cameras for a given performance... kinda seems like buying anything but Panasonic (or Leica, Sigma or any other L Mount alliance brand) is a bad choice on paper... but you do you buddy... I'm sure whatever brand you're using has great marketing material
Has Sony officially responded to the growing number of serious bugs being found in the 3.0 firmware update for the A7S III? Just reading through the A7SIII subreddit, there is the RAW ISO bug, random reboots, diminished auto-focus performance on some Sony lenses (35mm 1.8, & 14mm GM), bulb mode no longer working, TTL flash no longer working, and bluetooth broken on some bodies.
Could PetaPixel test these? Can't afford to test myself, as need the raw functionality of the prior firmware and Sony doesn't permit firmware rollbacks.
With any mass update of a camera system that is this popular there will be bugs. I have updated 4 a7s iii bodies and had none of the bugs on any of them personally.
@@fofopho Unless you're using the specific features that are buggy, the 3.0 firmware may seem fine.
Have you tried recording to a Ninja V in ProRes RAW at the lowest ISO? Using bulb mode? Attaching a TTL flash? Comparing auto-focus performance of the Sony 35mm 1.8 before and after the update?
How is the LSST for street photography?
Hahahahaha brilliant from Chris on BIFs 🤣
was that noise at 27:47 one of those weird Adobe podcast audio reconstruction errors? I haven't heard one of those in a while, haunting and distressing!
Unsung coffee is one you just mocked five minutes prior- Taco Bell’s coffee is solid 🤣🤣🤣
these are my issues with the update after getting it on my A1..
1. They changed UI, they have stupid boxes on the SS, Aperature and stuff making it distracting
2. They bricked the previous mobile app and we have to use Creator's App now
3. Creator'a App does not support back button focusing.. previous app supported it
4. All the setting gets reset on your camera, very tedious to save all the settings before switching over..
5. Third-party battery doesn't show battery percentage.
6. There is no way to downgrade firmware.
I got to get to Calgary
What do you think about panasonic s5 ii firmware update?
And i was so sure the „next week we’ll have a guest“ thing will just become an insider joke
I used an XC-10 last month. Remined me of my 1000s of hours on an XF-105 back in the day. It was... fine.
Will there be any more built? Maybe placing one in space or on the moon to take high resolution shots of the earth.
If you want THE BEST COFFE you have to visit Portugal to try Sical or Buondi 😋☕️
Today I realised I want a manufacturer (preferably sony :P) to design a camera which you can always hold with the grip in landscape orientation but able to rotate the sensor and lens mount 90 degrees for getting portrait orientation. For weddings and long events this would be a huge time saver (and would also save your own stamina) especially when bouncing on-camera flash - the hot shoe needs to be at a spot which doesn't rotate of course. Weather sealing such a mechanism might be close to impossible though..
a mirrorless rb67 or just buy a digital back for the rb67
As a self diagnosed 2/10. I apologize for bringing the average down. I will force some of my more visually pleasant friends to watch to bring the numbers back up!
BILF genuinely cracked me up
Odd with the reasoning for leaving out the A7sIII for the LUTs. Wasn’t the custom LUTs available in the A6700 and A7cII/R?
Yes, strange choice
The 2.0 Firmware on my a1 made my SIgma 500 5.6 disconnect randomly, anyone else having this issue?
Guys… you can use display LUTs on the a6700… which makes it even weirder that the a7s III hasn’t gotten that added in the recent firmware update.
(Still, love the recent update)
The a6700 isn’t really competing with their cinema cameras… the a7s kinda is… Panasonic and Sony/canon have very different approaches to their cinema vs consumer cameras when it comes to features
Can you ask camera manufacturers, for a range of models, how many firmware downloads they get?
Could there be a business for paying for better firmware?
Is there a way to view this in Canada while not acknowledging the existence of the CBC?
Sure can, set up a VPN and base yourself outside Canada (NZ is kinda fun for the ads…)
… no LUT support for the a1/a7S III because of the reason they are not cinema camera? What about the a9 III and the a6700? They got the LUT support also? Are they part of the FX line? 🤔
Chris would make a lot of money as an ad reading voice-over guy.
In fact I did radio for years and obviously most of our sponsored ad reads. Thanks for appreciating the voice!
it's 2024 with an A1 and I have to use 3rd party apps for focus bracketing. What is going on Sony. Dear God.
Chris takes better photos than me. I am ugly. McDonald's has the best sweet tea. 😂
Jaron plays/played Destiny?
Chris I’ve wanted to mention this for a while - can you make your shot a closeup for the pod filming? The framing on Jordan is better for the quad split podcast format :)))
No, Chris looks good wide. It's the set!
Petapixel could also zoom in to Chris' face in the software (OBS presumably)
It’s the framing of his face I’m talking about. Look at the size of his head in the frame compared to the others. It’s not the set.
@@virtualfilmer It's perfect as it is because Chris has a wide shot to show off his weekly things. It's LITERALLY the set.
Honestly my face is better from a distance anyways
For the LSST team: is it capable enough to take a high-resolution imagery of one of the largest near-milkyway galaxy the Y-0M4-ma?
Hortons coffee is the best😊
Don’t Talk about best black coffee and say fast food place with a Portuguese guy 😂
I was wondering if you were also gping to talk about the apparent A7sIII ISO issues in connection eith a Ninja V that came with the last update. I wasn't able to confirm anything of it myself and aside from ""random"" people on the internet haven't heard anything about it. So I wonder if there's a truth to it and if yes, what you think Sony should be doing about it.
I’m sure there is some truth to it even if it is isolated instances.
I don’t use external raw recording so I can’t comment on it, but I’ve had no problems with the updates on my 4 a7s iii bodies. Been great.
Let me tell you that McDonald's coffee in the UK is HORRENDOUS
same with the ones I've had in New Zealand.
Starbucks is also pretty bad.
Maybe you should buy a Panasonic S5II, FW 3.0 is here!!!!
And it blows Sonys firmware out of the water… so did 2.0… Panasonic really making themselves look good before the S1ii announcement soon… which will be interesting since they need to shove in even more features to make it a selling point over the S5ii
@Broskisnowski Yeah no... not at all... but keep talking out of your ass 👍👍
I can’t wait to get an OM-1 so I can check out my local BILFs!
The Omega goes back to Omega for service let no one else fool with it.
Based on the pixel pitch and resolution, by my math the LSST should be 376 times larger than full frame.
Plus free software bugs!
I'd watch a fishing youtube channel featuring Chris and I don't give a shit at all about fish or fishing. I just think his passion for the nature and the craft would be interesting and it would be a pleasant image to take in. Maybe the next move after PetaPixels is Chris Gone Fishin'
And Jordan could shoot it and be grumpy and that would be really amusing. Maybe he'd grow to like it which would be a fun character arc.
is Jordan testing a new camera/lens/profile or is it just me? looks like his colors are a bit faded in this episode 🤨
I'm having McDonald coffee for 40 years, coffee is not as hot as before, is a no no.
Jordan was my favourite until he dissed the Monarchy. 😂
Also, Burger King fries cannot be beaten.
Actually, McDonald's coffee does make sense. McCafe came out of Melbourne, Australia, a place known for great coffee. So they would copy that mixture of coffee as well.
I also last ate at Hungry Jacks (Burger King in Australia) over 20 years ago. At one stage, they were hiring students from the sub-continent, and quality went down 1000%.
Subway doesn't sell coffee in Australia.
20:53 they themselves advertise it, have been since the first iteration, as a low-light video camera, so...
If Magic Lantern was on Alpha bodies 🤩🤩🤩🤩
I actually know somebody that, not only uses an a7siii for photo, but the only stills they shoot is wildlife
The S line is for sports and wildlife… the R with its higher resolution is for static shots and the no letter version for well just the base model that can do everything somewhat
The A7Siii takes great photos, only the resolution is limited to 12 megapixel, so cropping comes at a real price on those files. But if you see it as an extension of video, e.g. taking photos for time-lapses to be used in videos, thumbnails, or social media posts, 12 megapixel is certainly adequate. It's definitely a video-first camera, with a good photo option.
@@LoFiAxolotl This is wrong, Sony’s S lineup was always first and foremost intended for low light stills shooting and video. The a9 series was their premium sports/wildlife body for fast action, soon joined by the a1, the flagship.
Go back and look at marketing of the a7s and a7s ii. Also look at the specs, those cameras do not support extreme action with a (for the time) fair-to-middling burst rate of 5 fps and small buffer.
@@Edwin-- Oh I know it takes adequate photos! I was just responding to their comments about the small amount of people who use an a7s III for stills.
@@questioneverything680 No it was definitely not intended for low light shooting.... Sony isn't usually making their business decisions based on disproved myths... though they do like using them in their marketing material
You guys know more than me by a country mile, it seems to me that Sony doesn’t understand that if you wanna shoot wildlife for Video or things that are moving, more run & gun, you need an EVF, the FX doesn’t cut it.
So, down here in Australia we have hungry jacks (which is technically burger king but not named it due to copyright disputes anyway). Whilst I have not tried the coffee the rest of the food is easily the best fast food for both price and quality here. I do not appreciate this absolute slander towards one of the premiere fast food establishments here 😝
Burger King is hands down the best fast food burger chain.
@@g.lindzey3291 dam right
It’s hilarious that this channel is sponsored by Olympus. I thought Micro Four Thirds was dead.
The g9ii had absolutely amazing sales numbers! Far from dead I’d say
@@LoFiAxolotl Yes, and Jordan shoots most episodes on the G9II as well
@@Edwin-- and before that on an S5iix and before that on a GH6 and before that on a S1h.... Jordan has a Panasonic Fetish but we all knew that
KFC in Pakistan sells instant coffee, so bad
Pedal pixel brady bunch 😂
Sony is a complete failure with firmware updates, and I shoot Sony.
What an embarrassment. 😂
Maybe if they didn't ignore it for so long.
Fishing... As a concept.
Jordan it's correct, Burger King has very bad coffe
I hate clickbait. In the whole one and a half hour episode you guys talked about the Sony firmware for 5 minutes. Why not call it what it is a discussion with Levi.
In what circle of hell would you ever consider coffee from a fast food chain?
I would STILL LOVE for Sony Cameras to record in the EXIF info the set Focal Length it was when using MF lenses that do not have contacts. I use MF vintage lenses like 90% of the time and I wish it could just record that bit of info in the info so I could be like "Oh yeah I used my Nikkor 50mm AIS and not my Helios 40 85mm f1.5 for that shot". Thats just me though.
It’s not as convenient as in camera metadata tagging would be but when I use manual lenses I take a picture of a labeled lens cap when I start shooting, then take one to finish off a set before switching lenses, then tag them in post so it has the lens info in the EXIF data!
@@Pugboy1321 good suggestion.
Subway is the worst coffee
The answer is definitely McDonalds, you’re so right lol. And hotness, you’re all hot! :) Hot means watchable, in UA-cam terms, and you’re all pleasantly attractive enough. Congrats. 😂
Sony is like Canon. They will never give you the full package to be satisfied with the purchase.
Oh no
Create your own community of professional photographers and make your own camera and lense production company to manufacture the best camera and lenses available that don't need replacing, then make it affordable and then all those issues would be resolved and everybody who wanted such a great system would be your customers. Make sure that you only use the top quality materials to make your products, and don't take any shortcuts or do any cost savings with inferior ideas or items when you are creating them.
Sony is so weird when it comes to firmware
Their H.265 codec (XAVC HS) can do 24 and 60 but not 30 FPS
Let the record show that Chris is both hotter AND a better photographer than me
Please change the intro music :( It's very disconcerting hearing an alarm in the middle of some very nice casual talks. My sleepy head can't take it, and my cats always freak out when they hear that on the TV too
(B)ird (I)'d (L)ike to (F)otograph
BILF sounds so wrong
That's because it is, and Chris has been duly chastised. -Jaron
Sony ZVE1 custom luts work flawlessly! Way better than any Panasonics (with their compressed 8bit like lut implementation) its actually as good as Blackmagic which is class leading 👌 shame for people who bought the older flagships 🤷🏻♂️
*also Nikon wont do it full stop on any of their cameras, wonder why you never touched on that on your previous reviews? That and the lack of internal slow motion conversion in 4k??? Whats up with that guys don’t tell me you are Nikon fanboys now haha 😅🔫
Because no sane person wants either baked in Luts or slowed down clips. The whole point of shooting RAW is you've got control in post.
Again claiming that Sony are bringing features from their lower end cameras to higher end ones with the latest firmwares. They're not. They missed a lot with the A1. Animal eye-AF in video and focus bracketing are massive features to some and not things that require hardware the A1 doesn't have (does NOT need an AI chip) and yet they're still missing. No well focused wildlife video or advanced macro for you on the $6500 flagship camera. You need to buy an older and/or cheaper model to do that and then not have a high res and/or/stacked sensor. It's not like every other camera at the moment has foucs bracketing or anything.
I hate how they bust on Canon all the time, so many pros use it and focus on creating not just the gear. Levi just got to work and with oh, no, such inferior kit.
There’s a room available for Jordan at The Tower where he can reside at His Majesty’s pleasure, with the bonus of being kept company by the ravens, which we know he’ll adore, whilst contemplating whether elected leaders like Trudeau, Biden and Trump are actually a better way to go. 😉😂😂. Don’t read this comment! 😅
NO ONE is doing podcasts these days, way to be innovative guys hahaha. Nah, seriously, great stuff, just sucks that everyone is sorta forced to have to do podcasts now.
Why does the guy introducing everyone look like an animated character, does he really practice those plastic facial expressions
Yes, Apple sucks!
after seeing the title, my thought was, "exactly," when will the c2pa feature be released? I am still waiting for that license .dat file ...., but I strived to read the c2pa website , researched, and tested the c2patool command-line tool already ;) hmm, but I wonder (secret whisper to Sony Firmware developers) maybe just follow the initial c2patool example and name everything (filename p256.key p256.crt, allowed_list ) the same (as a prototype)? ; hmm, regarding Custom LUTs, I am not that worried since I am not really using it actively (but I did try it once on the Desktop softwares and applied it there already so I am not that worried/agitated to push Custom LUTs, since I used to be a Firmware Developer for printers/POS, so I understand the Firmware memory/Burnable ROM restrictions. But, Sony, I look forward to learning/using Custom LUT on the "Monitor and Control" app (on a iPadPro, and already loaded that M&C app), but gosh, I am thinking that iPad Mount (SmallRig) on the Camera Top might be too heavy,... so, I am saving budget for your 5G unit (PDT-FP1) (but hopefully no 5G/wifi problems). Thank you!
You guys need to come to Australia where there is decent coffee seriously McDonald's that is like river water. I cannot believe you have to send it into buying McDonald's coffee I think I need to unsubscribe. I'm just joking. I do love your show but seriously guys I'm a professional landscape photographer in Australia and I routinely grab a coffee on my way to my shoot but you guys seriously McDonald's I'm coming to America to open a coffee chain because if that is the best coffee seriously there is a serious problem in America that needs dressing and that's the standard of coffee. I've actually had some friends travel to the United States and they did say to me how bad the coffee was. I haven't been to United States but I am planning to come over there at the end or middle of next year, where the trip but seriously the coffee needs to get better before I'm coming so you put the word out....lol
FWIW the question was fast food coffee, not our go-to for coffee.
@@PetaPixel I still wouldn't drink it
