If your enemy believes they will be killed or tortured if captured, they will not surrender which causes more of your own to be killed.

Well done for getting through it. As for mistreatment of Ukrainians, seems to me it shows a lack of discipline. But, we have the example of the second world war, and decades later, former POWs never forgave or forgot the hardship and punishment by the two major axis countries. All the Russians have to do to be safe is go home, the Ukrainians have not that luxury. This war is the biggest Russian mistake in history, I expect. I hope so anyway. Take care all, let this put our civilian life experiences in perspective.

I believe mistreatment is actually systematic. It shows a similar pattern to Russian prisons. Russian forces are accustomed to treating anyone they see as enemy as less than human. It is very similar to the axis powers. Its like a total throwback to WWII except with modern twists and particularly Russian flavor

Every single released Ukrainian prisoner has declared that they were tortured. Without exception - just as soon as they go through onboarding back to Ukraine. Yet Human Rights groups consistently give Russia a clean report on how it treats prisoners.
It is all just one great big PR exercise - as is pretty much every thing out of Kiev.
For example we all know Russia is losing many times more men than Ukraine, but some how there are 10X as many Ukrainian POWs as Russian POWs.
Aiden is lucky to be exchanged given how few Russians there are to swap with him.
