A bar in L.A. serves as a meeting spot for many potentially romantic dates. There are also potential sparks behind the bar, as the two bartenders, Charlie and Jessie, share a rapport that zings with energy and familiarity.
But Charlie is meeting another woman after his shift is over, sending Jessie's hopes plunging. But over one night, romance takes its own course, and it's anything but straightforward.
Directed by Patrick Hickman and written by Stefani Zabner (who also plays a role in the film), this short romance captures the buzz of L.A. nightlife and the vagaries of dating and love in the modern age. Focusing on a loosely connected community of barflies and bartenders, the narrative takes advantage of its bustling and socially diverse setting to explore a cross-section of romantic hopes and dreams, revealing both modern and eternal anxieties when it comes to finding love.
The visuals -- rendered in warm, woozy naturalistic cinematography and handheld camerawork -- are as loose and amiable as the storytelling, which observes the quirks of its characters with a keen but affectionate eye. The dialogue luxuriates in the give-and-take between people, with a good ear for their hidden agendas and subtexts. One date between a type-A optimizer and her more laidback prospect reveals a promising spark and attraction, but the bartenders' romantic potential with one another goes downhill with each beat.
The collective cast finds a solid balance between an understated realism and the stylization of the comedic banter. Actors Matt Garcia and Zabner particularly excel at the genuine sincerity of hope and longing underlying their wit and sarcasm. That hope and longing become more pointed and poignant as the night wears on, but confronting their disappointment might just open them up to other possibilities they've never considered before.
Shakespeare's famous line, "The course of true love never did run smooth," applies easily to ON THE ROCKS, which explores the old maxim with modern wit and mores. And that truth is something the film's characters learn throughout the night, as their prospects ebb and flow with one another. In the end, maybe they find true love, or maybe it's more "love for right now." The film itself has a wry knowingness about love's prospects amid dating's random anarchy, no matter how much we try to "game" it. But it's not about the end point for these characters. Instead, it's more about the journey, and being pulled along each stop by a sense of possibility that's almost as intoxicating as love itself.
If my date asked me if I were a Twitter or an Instagram person, I'd rather jump out of the window than continue the date.
😂😂😂🙌
Kind of like when people ask me what my zodiac is. I feel like I’m being interrogated every time. As if telling you my zodiac is going to auto-generate my genetic code for you to pick apart
The bar was street level so you’d be ok if you did. 😉
Me too!
@@salma_Nella22That’s when I automatically start lying about everything that follows 🤨
Somehow I feel better about being retired with a cat. Best of luck to the younger generation. Looks like social networking hasn't made dating easier, just more time-consuming!
it's always been about the right place at the right time old man,
could I borrow your cane...
@@PerspectiveEngineer Rude. And does Mari strike you as a masculine name? Question: why did this comment draw such an aggressive reply from you? Seems like Mari had compassion, not judgement, for younger people. I have the same. My question is optional. Have a great day, .x. .
@@denisejustdenise well said.
@@K3Flyguy Thanks, Michael. 🙂
A cat is ok but a human is better, easier to pet honestly.
I like it, good writing, I think it takes a good writer to change the mood of the observer along with the characters…you could feel every it of the awkwardness creepiness and uncomfortable feelings of being on a mismatched date at first but then it all turned out for better in the end and ended up being surprisingly cute and satisfying ☺️
Right? It was like an elaborate puzzle all coming together by the end as each person found their true match
Except it's not like this in real life. In real life most people like the same feew people which means most people were left unmatched
That was unexpectedly good. 👏👏 Omeleto puts out consistently good short movies. Keeps me up too late sometimes. 😴
Life is better when you aren’t seeing it through a haze of alcohol.
That joke about getting "to do a bit of missionary work tonight" was hilarious.
Great job cast and crew. I tend to believe life is more seedy than that but then again I don't get out much.
Seedy.. How?
These 2 bartenders need a show
Appreciate the cinematography. The short cuts and long shots were optically provocative. Casting went easy on the eyes. Entertaining film!
This was a good one. More like a destiny thing. Short hair girl loves the Bartender but couldn't say it. But destiny happens & she met the Asian guy who drives her home. & the Bartender is left with Blue dress girl who was actually there to date Asian guy. Very good acting cast. 👍
You know it's a match made in heaven when they both have androids that use the same charger 😍
Awesome short…Very entertaining!! Great cast, shout out to Charlie!!
Really enjoyed watching this, felt relatable lol. Great job Matt great work!!
Aaahhh!! To be a Millennial or Generation Z! I'm a Gen X myself and this reminds me of "Reality Bites" or "Singles". Now it's about social media, apps, and a lot of superficiality. But yes it still holds true that you can indeed find love when you least expect it! 💕👫
these people have the social skills of teenagers...in their 30s? lol.
That’s everyone in LA. Never go there.
Even 50s does 👎🏼
Please tell me where in the world everyone isn’t completely moronic, I’d love to move there.
Good stuff! That barman gave me serious young Adrian Brody vibes :)
He's definitely younger and better looking than Adrien. No hate for him here, just stating the fact and my opinion.
The actor who plays Charlie is amazing! I can definitely see him goin places
Things haven't changed in decades, only the format...started out with matchmakers, then in newspapers, now BOOM! Only difference is you can find online stuff about the person... now it is weird feeling if you can't find an online info on them
Dating is terrible these days!! Everyone is trying to impress the wrong someone....geez.....this sucks!!
This was weird but kinda cute
That's a perfect explanation, haha. I agree.
Seeing from the actual world, not so weird. Dating is unpredictable. Most of the times, you don't end up with the person you thought you would.
Are you in your 20s?
Very nice! Lots of relatable nuance.
Great to see Adrien Brody taking up roles in some smaller films too, what a legend he is!
You play way to much
That's not the brodmeister
Adrien Brody? He's not in this short story. What are you talking about?
If you're referring to Charlie the bartender, that's Matthew Garcia. Not Adrien Brody.
He was probably being facetious... but on the contrary, perhaps he really did actually believe that is Adrian Brody.
@@anthonyb7571 Well, Matthew do looks a little like Adrien. But just a little bit.
This gives me "He's not that into you" vibes. Anyone else?
Old reference, but yes.
@@cahidijoyoraharjo7833 Who the F cares how old it is? You apparently.
This film demonstrates _exactly_ why I stopped going to bars a long time ago. The only genuine person was Charlie. Can't believe he didn't already have an SO.
very nice short! Enjoyed these short stories and the cast!
Those two on that date have nothing in common and no actual psychological chemistry. 🙄
It was enjoyable because
it gave you the time
to get to know the
characters.
You can turn this
into a TV show.
A great little film. Omeleto is saving my life.
I’ll have to fire Charlie. He’s giving away to many free drinks!
I'm pretty sure he reimbursed them with his tips. He doesn't look like a criminal to me.
@@cahidijoyoraharjo7833
I agree
That was really really good. Great premise and very well acted!
Really liked this one. Great writing, acting, and cinematography. Too often a short goes off track because of weak writing.
You know it's 2022 so I'll give it to you,
nice little film you got there.... 😀
I'm glad I'm married and don't work in a bar....anymore 😁🤣
I think we're all glad you did...
@@PerspectiveEngineer boo
i love that the Headstones are playing in the background! Awesome!
Thanks I was wondering
Actually, it's all original music from the band Øzwald - they just released it all as an EP a few weeks ago!
@@zabsy well then, my mistake - good tune! may i edit my comment and say that the song reminded me of a song by the Headstones...who are also a great group :)
Like bees flitting from flower to flower...while the honey gets made and collected in some hive somewhere....
Happy to be married and not deal with the online dating apps . I love how this ended tho💚
they forgot the oxford comma because we don't use it in journalism!!
Very well done!
I don't get the part about how the woman in the blue dress was kind of a creepy tease and when she came back she was normal?
Yeah that sat poorly with me too. If the genders were reversed, people would be calling out on this sort of behaviour.
Maybe she had more drinks with her second date and was more relaxed now ? Idk
I think her character treated dating like a CPA would, all about the numbers. She researched the original guy’s profile and made an attempt at conversation to find commonalities: Dodgers, both CPAs, etc. I think her double booking the date was rude, but also could be construed as a “numbers game” more dates = better chance at success.
At the end of the night, after two bad dates, she was able to make a genuine connection with the bartender, in part because she “wasn’t prepared”.
Constructive feedback: They spoke too fast, couldn't hear or understand. Appeared very rehearsed.
Had no problem understanding them.
You can select a slower speed like 0.75 or 0.50 in your settings if you find it too fast for you.
I often watch vids like Ted Talks or Recipes on faster speeds from 1.25 to 2x as I often find them too SLOW, LOL
Are you from snetica
Ta ta ta tta ta ta ta tta.....
Xcuse me......
Yaaaassss;

That cracked me up....🤣❤️
It was fun to watch. Enjoyed my time.
Well done, excellent job by the actors all are extremely talented!
"Chad with two d's." Nice touch.

"chad is slang for some kind of a super cool guy"
Not in a sarcastic sense ?
Really enjoyed this! I was in a situation where I was crazy about a good friend but didn't want ruin the great friendship I had with her.
The dialogues are way to fast for me. Thank god I have the option to slow them down.
Not to mention there's an option for subtitles? The CC button at the bottom?
I'm Gen X and going on 22 .... From Los Angeles moved to Seattle... I love the writing and acting
I am 76 and I just don’t get it!!Must be my age!LOL!!!
I'm 77, and they're all just a bunch of fakes 😔
Lol don't worry I'm 45 and I don't get it either 😅
Which part don't you get? I think the story is pretty straight forward. Charlie told his bartender friend that he has a crush on a female friend and led her to think that he was talking about her. And it crushed her heart when she found out that he was talking about someone else. Then comes along Alan who's waiting for his date, Avery who's using statistics and calculations to find the perfect match for herself. And when things started to go well, she left so suddenly cause she had another date lined up that night. Which left Alan confused and disappointed. But then after talking for a while with Jessie (the female bartender), they both felt a connection. And then when Charlie finally meet Karissa, the girl he's waiting for, he was met with disappointment as well when he learns that she already had a boyfriend. And then afterwards, Avery got back from the next date she went with which didn't end well. Charlie consoled her and had a chat with her. The two felt a connection and found some things in common between them. And then they hit it off.
It's ok to not get it 😀
I'm 28 and DON'T get it either! 😊
I have a gorgeous girl living in my imagination. It is cheaper that way, no drama.
Modern dating seems sad to me.
Well constructed, well directed and played. Good proof of concept; is it going anywhere?
the ending was perfect
I found the blue dress woman annoying and it felt like she was fetishizing the guy because he's "Asian" .Plus it was rude how she tried to ditch him for another random date on the same night.
She thinks the dating grounds can be navigated with calculations and statistics. How naive.
It actually can. It is all about calculations and statistics. Dating is very predictable. You know already which men will succeed in it and you know which women will take advantage of it. It just doesn't mean that if you "play your cards right" you may not end up in the percentages you do not want to be in. But seeing the overall picture, it is very measurable, very predictable.
@@dinos9607 Uh huh... Numbers can't predict feelings, smart ass. Even though the prediction was successful in getting you the perfect date, it doesn't guarantee that they're perfect for you romantically. Numbers and statistics don't determine your emotions.
@Cahidi
Youre naive as the high divorce rate proves.
Thats how dating apps work, on calculations and algorithms. The billions generated means theres probably sth to it and keep peeps hooked and paying subscriptions.
@@feralkat9370 This story just proved my point. They all didn't end up with the ones they're predicted before. So who's the naive one here? Me or you?
Nice one, love it
Use the jigger. The new owner is cracking down on food cost. Proceeds to go drink for drink with everyone
This is like a bad episode of bar rescue
I distinctly remember dating once - years ago. I found it completely hopeless; but that's just me...
Same. I wouldn’t touch “dating” with a stick. I’d rather be single.
I'm watching this on my phone... the text messages are way too small to read...

My man looks like Adrian Brody
That's life . . .
@9:50 I didn’t expect it this of the Christian scene. Is this what it’s really like these days?
how does this video exist?
Wow the mysterious world and its unexpected ways at the end of the day .
Same problems right now...
The way things are now I'm surprised their isn't USB/charging ports in toilets, then again I'm olde school, so perhaps there is.
I loved it ❤️
Alan is that you!?
this is so cute
How many times is this film going to be made?
Can you sit over there for a minute.?...
Um... once? If you're talking about rom-coms in general, then I guess they're gonna make it till the end of times. Or at least until the end of our civilization.
So true a@ Marih 3286 would rather watch my 3 guinea piggies shred veggies..and cuddle with my 16 year old cat ..than trying to get a date on Tinder lol!

Nice, if life was really like that.
L.A. SUCKS. In so many ways, esp now. Glad I left!
Straight folks sure have it tough…
Damn I didn’t realise people walk around with their lines memorised ten seconds ahead 😆 the dialogue & acting in this is 👎
Chick flick, not saying thats a bad thing just saying what it is
these characters are so stereotypically millennials
This was painful to watch. The camera was out of focus most of the time. The acting was very "im a new actor and i think this was nautral acting." Just yikes.
Oooo that lady in blue dress PLEASE stay away from her 😝 red flag 🚩 when she says you are ready have one drink 🚩 👎🏼
why did the blue dress girl ditch the Asian guy? the seem to be hitting it off then she bailed..why?
She had another date lined up - it's called hypergamy... Check out 'the husband store'...
@@ibubezi7685
Don't you mean "polyandry" ?
Definition for hypergamy I found is "Act or practice of seeking a spouse of higher socioeconomic status, or caste status than oneself."
I 'almost' feel sorry for the Asian guy.... he's going to suffer, from that insufferable girl.... Better ask SSM to smack some sense into him 😉
Okay, this made very little sense, other than that everybody is clearly not into their date. Weird film.
