Fabian Wendt plays J.S. Bach, Cello Suite Nr.1, Prelude on a 1963 Fender Precision Bass (standard tuning)
arrangement by Fabian Wendt
Yes, the end part is played by using artificial harmonics (harmonics of fretted notes).
The highest fretted note on a Fender Bass is an Eb, but the piece goes up to a high G.
Sometimes limitations can be very inspiring ;-)
Thank you for watching!
I like the way which I was criticized for myself, the tempo that lags which only enhances the beautiful composition. Love seeing someone do the same thing, I guess it was the baroque way, oh well. Not lack of keeping tempo but deliberately lagging it.
I was just wondering how would you play the second movement, since you just have 21 frets... Thanks for the harmonics lesson!
Luke Skywalker of bass guitar
that makes me really happy thank you
now available!! fabianwendt.bandcamp.com
And to think us bass players still get told to just play root. Bravo that is amazing. Beautifully played.
:-) Thank you!
trying to learn this piece on my jazz bass, 200 views are mine, great job man
Yeah! I am happy to hear that! Thank you!
Views count only once but I get the concept haha
How did learning go?
Man, your bass older than Bach
;-) Thanks
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
good joke.
@@fabianwendt2628 I can kill for one of this... this P Bass is no contest one of the most beautiful ever seen... and is in good hands 🙌
lmao
Fabian Wendt plays the Precision here like Van Gogh played with colors. How truly beautiful.
I am really touched and feel very honored! Thank you!!!
The musical joy you achieve at the end of this piece is the definition of cadence.
feel extremely honoured to hear that!! thank you!
The Force is strong with this one
:-) !!! Thank you!
Best version on Electric bass. Thank you for the music. I will play this prelude on my Exam.
This is my favorite rendition of this Suite on electric bass. The guy that looks like Ashton Kutcher is a close second but I'm a huge fan of vintage P basses. I have a 73 but I really want a pre CBS P bass.
Thank you!! Flat wounds are the deal!
You are right. Ashton Kutcher hasn’t got the phrasing right and plays each note with the same intensity. This is played with feeling and, frankly, with class.
That is beautiful; soulful, nuanced, and technically brilliant playing.
Thank you!! :-) :-)
P bass sound at its best. Loved your interpretation:)
Thank you!!! I am really happy to hear that!

As a child and starting on the Bass I was given a short piece from Bach To learn with no clue as to where it came from or who has written it. Playing it I was sure it was from a Bassist I wasn't aware of yet. Bach To me always sounds like he was writing for the Bass guitar. It feels so familiar and comfortable yet has the " mathematics ' style of a tight Bass line. Beautiful is Bach.
It was written for the cello, and that's a bass cleft instrument, too.
I'm trying to learn it on the cello.
That's beautiful. I've played it on the classical guitar for decades. Great job!
In my opinion this one is the best, because he managed to play the whole piece on a bass with only 4 strings and 20 frets.
Thank you! Yes, that's part of the game!
Getting back here again to tell you this video is one of the greatest reasons for me to picking electric bass classes. Thank you so much for the inspiration!
fantastic!! I am really happy to hear that!
Best rendition I've seen.
I love this.And I notice that Precision Bass’s approaching.
Thank you! 🙂
And that fender is amazing such a beautiy
This is the only guy I’ve seen on UA-cam playing this piece who is actually making music and not a display of fast fingerings with a horrible tone. Congrats, you are great!
Thank you so much for your comment!! This is probably the most enthusiastic feedback I have ever got! You are great!!
The highest level of bass I ever heard.
Wow!!! Thank you! 🙂
I listened to the start. FINALLY!! Someone on bass has understood that the deep “bass notes” of the piece are drawn out and not played with the same timing as the rest of the notes. Thank you!!
Thank you! Yes, music and sport are different disciplines! ;-)
So beautiful. Congrats for your bass version. Combine Bach and bass is so great!!!
I love how you put yourself, your feelings into this piece of music.
Thank you!!
absolutely stunning
I love the vintage P bass. This is the best bass version of this piece I've found on UA-cam.
Wow, I am happy to hear that! Thank you!!
Beautifull playing beautifull tone. Loved it so much 🎉
I love how you have interpreted this beautiful piece for a beautiful instrument and performed it expertly.
Wow, I am really happy to hear that! Thank you!
This is my favorite
Simply amazing!
This is called music
Just beautiful, guy. Just beautiful.
Thank you!! 🙂
Lot of good ideas in it! Bravo!
Brilliant.
I have listened to several bass guitarists play that and you get it Mr. Wendt. You get it.
:-) :-) :-) thank you!!
I just watched 20 different versions of this, on electric bass, and this is my favorite. Beautiful job. Thank you.
I am totally happy to hear that!! Thank you!!
love this
I'm goose bumped up!
I am happy to hear that! Thank you!!
Fantastic! ❤
To me, a Classic guitar player, it sounds amazing, fantastic that a “limited” instrument can sound like that. Congratulations 👏😂😂👏👏
Absolutely Beautiful
Bravo!
Game changer!
Thank you!!!
BRAVO!!
Thank you!!
Beautiful, musical playing, and that’s a great sounding P bass, you can really hear how dry the body wood is. I loved the thumb position, false harmonics and the use of picking position to round out the bottom notes. Lots of great solutions to technical problems. Thanks for posting 👍👍👍👍
Wow, thank you!!!! It is such a great feeling to hear, that people out there (like you) are really carefully listening to this! This is probably the most detailed description of my version I have ever heard! Thanks listening and thank you for your wonderful feedback! Fabian
this is so beautiful
Thank you!!
amazing
As you know, there are many UA-cam videos of Prelude #1 on electric bass. I watch them all. I am not much of a bass fan, but I am a lifelong fan of J.S. Bach. Bach is rock! I think he would like your version. Excellent musicianship. As you also know, Bach's music did not include any notations as to tempo or volume and such. Your version was beautiful. Uniquely your own, yet true to the music as written. Bravo.
I feel very honoured! Thank you! 🙂🙂
Hey thanks man! This is awesome
Just stumbled on this. Incredibly well done! Probably the best version ever done on the Bass and impossible to top. Love it!
I feel really honored! Thank you!!
O melhor em baixo elétrico que já vi.
Simply briliiant playing, so much feeling.
Thank you! 🙂
Awesome
Thank you!!

Well done! This is my 2nd Bach study-piece and I am well-humbled and motivated by your presentation. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Anthony, I am really happy to hear that! Thank you!
This is a perfect performance. Nice job!
Absolutely beautiful and flawless my friend. Play on!
Thank you!
Brawo! Fenomenalnie to brzmi na basie!
Just beautiful!!! Bravo!!! 👏👏👏
What amazing dexterity & beautiful playing! You are truly outstanding.
Bless
Thank you so much!!!
Well done ! The best bass sound of 1007 on the whole youtube which I've ever seen !!!! Also, it is amazing idea to use flageolet as Jazz bass doesn't have enough range for 1007 at the end of prelude.
WOW!!! I feel extremely honored!
Thank you so much! 🙂
by the way: standard tuning, D'Addario Chromes, Alembic F2B, Palmer DI
Yeah! perfect!
:-) :-) :-) !!!
Fantastic playing, best iv'e seen, played with feeling & emotion.
Thank you, I feel honored to hear that!
@@fabianwendt2628 You're welcome my friend, watched it many times.
Nice dynamics
bravo.
Cool man!
That was very lovely
I’m an electric bass player. I can’t play it yet but I learn it on the piano. I find that this piece can be played much slowly and solve many technical difficulties for the electric bass. The tuning doesn’t help. It’s written for a cello tuning
That's nice
Thanks!
This is dope bro good job
Thank you!
Excellent! Nice cinematography, too!
Thank you!! I will tell her! (Sabrina Schray)
EPIC
Wow!! Thanks!!
Bravo, beautifully played!
Stunning. Absolutely stunning.😘😘😘😘
Beautiful interpretation!
Thank you!!
Great Jaggy, are you insane man!!
Excellent! Thank you!
At first I was like he’s not gonna get high enough but then you pulled out the false harmonics and *blam, pow, boom, whoosh* totally high enough.
Ha ha ha!! Yeah man, that made day!! Cheers from Stuttgart, Germany
The sound is just "wow" 😮 Great job by the way
i love his playing but hate the sound,
Buenísimooooooooooo mató. yessssssssssssss
Muchas gracias!!
fantastic! this inspires me to start learning some solo cello repertoire on my bass for sure! thank you!
Extraordinary tks for share !
Thank you!!
Really well executed. I also have a '63 P Bass. I think it was the best year!
Braboo!!!!!!!
Gracias!!
Outstanding. B
Best part is that battle worn p bass!
Fantástica interpretação.
great tone!
Great tune this bass. Well played man.
Thank you!!
good play!! good arrangement!!
This bass!!!
whoa most bassists just keep a straight tempo throughout and don't really add much musicality in their interpretation. but this really gives the work justice. makes me want to play bass :)
Thank you!! I am really happy to hear that! What instrument do you play? Kind regards Fabian
At the beginning, I worried about the shortage of frets knowing how this number goes. But very surprised at the solution! Harmonics!
:-) :-) :-) Yes!!! Thank you!!
Que hermosos sonidos, excelente trabajo, todo un artista!
Muchas gracias!!
Perfecto hermano !!!!!
Muchas gracias!!!
The tone that you achieved in this video is beautiful! What a marvelous instrument, it's the equivalent of an old double bass with a great, full sound.
That's the sound of a tube amp, yes? Also, when transcribing it from the cello's sheet music, did you decide to delay the notes due to the difficulty of playing artifical harmonics quickly? I'm sure many people would appreciate a breakdown of this piece and/or sheet music showing where artifical harmonics are necessary due to a 20 fret bass guitar. Thank you for your excellent rendition of this piece.
Thank you! I am really happy to hear that! Yes the bass is played through an Alembic F2-B tube preamp, but 90% of what you hear is just the sound of the bass (and the flat wound strings). I am not sure what you exactly mean with "delay the notes". The transition from playing "normal" frettet notes into the section where the artificial harmonics are used is quite tricky, whereas the part itself is not very problematic, but I try to breathe with the music instead of just to keep running through the notes. I hope that helps. ;-) Fabian
