Red lighting, that's how I play at night when hunting. I often play in real time though, some many hours of nothingness, going about my business on other computers, watching a movie, listening to music, practicing with the Angriffscheibe and/or reading the Handbuch, or whatever to fill the time. If something pops up I flip the lights thanks to the overpriced but highly enjoyable Philips Hue. As a rather expensive option, running the downloadable attack disc on a separate computer, I use a Surface, really works great, with the exception of the attack disc app not having a night mode. ;) Great stuff and thanks for posting! Now that's a serious gamer! I wonder if there's a way to tone down HUD elements as well (bright message box and dive command buttons stand out and decrease effect of having a proper lighting).
Yes, there is actually a mod that I use that tones down the brightness of the message box. It´s called Bstanko6´s Low contrast message box. You can also press CTRL + Z at any time to remove all HUD elements
The main reason to use Red Light is red light does not effect your night vision. However, in this situation, it's counteracted by the colours and brightness of the screen. So any real advantage is psychological. You learneall about this during flight training. Assuming your night vision is protected by the red light, then once you turn on the light, you've lost your night vision and it will take about 20 minutes to an hour to get it back. Better to just turn up the gamma. lol However, again. With that red light desk lamp, you might protect your night vision, but it has to be indirect light for it to work. In your case, you have the bright light from the lamp visible. Better to turn the lamp away slightly so you only see reflected light. :)
White light in the room makes it much harder to see details on a dark screen. I have experienced that the red light really does help a lot with that. That is the main benefit.
Also conventional LED doesn't completely eliminate other wavelengths, if you want true red light you need to use an incandescent light that doesn't resonate. We might not be aware of the led resonation because it happens super quickly but in reality led lights turn on and off constantly according to your region's frequency, for example if your power outlet outputs in 120hz, the led light turns on and off 120 times in one second. While we cannot see it, it does have an impact on our biological clock, especially if you're really close to the source. I use a 15W incandescent bulb with a potentiometer, that way I can adjust the luminosity. It's the warmest type of light, it doesn't resonate and it doesn't output as much noise as most LED lights do. Mind you thought, if it's a good LED then it's even better than an incandescent bulb like Phillips' Dubai lamp, the problem is that they're really expensive, nearly impossible to get and shipping almost guarantees arriving broken.
