- Union Pacific "Big Boy" 4-8-8-4 #4014 was limited to only 1 short excursion in 2022. The locomotive left the Steam Shop in Cheyenne, WY on Thursday July 28th and ran south to Denver, CO on the Greeley Subdivision. On July 30th, #4014 returned to Cheyenne pulling a public excursion benefiting the Union Pacific Museum. This video contains highlights from both days of operation.
This will be part of a future full-length DVD/Blu-ray/streaming video.

It's always amazing to see a Big Boy in action. Greetings from Austria 🇦🇹
The Big Boy is a incredible Beast of steel on rails!
That is one awesome locomotive. I love the whistle and how smooth it rides the rails. 🚂👍❤
can agree
The Bigboy is the best steam engine ever built. Nice that the 4014 drives again. Fantastic video. Thank you for showing me. Greetings from Germany
Nice to see that you follow American steam, especially the Big Boy. I have relatives in Germany, in Munich; when I go there, I like to ride the Fichtelbergbahn. Those steam locomotives, of course, aren't as big as the Big Boy, but they are beautiful anyway. I like German steam.
@@ericemmons3040 Hello Eric, thank you for your nice comment. I'm actually a big fan of the narrow gauge railways in the USA. Of course, I also have models of the Saxon narrow gauge such as the 4K and 1K, which are rare on the Fichtelbergbahn but on many other Saxon railways. Have a nice week and best regards, Wolfgang
The largest, heaviest, mightiest, and most complex of all steam locomotives in the world ever built and to roam on every railroad out there. I tell y'all, the 4014 "Big Boy" is a tremendous titan. A vast and powerful beast like that can make Gordon the Big Engine eat his own puff. I am more than humbly proud to ever being a train enthusiast watching videos of a unique steam engine that's more incredible and intriguing like any other.
I absolutely love, love, love steam locomotives 💙💙💙 & Big Boy sure is a beauty!!!
Thank you for sharing!!!
Take care & stay safe out there!!!
Jesus loves you and so do I ❤️
May God bless you ❤️
The sound of steam engine is great!!!
The big boy is the loudest locomotive of the west!
This whistle fits 4014 better than the other one.
The fact that 3 years ago everyone was like 'POGGERS' when they said about it's return to steam
Wow!!!!!! It back in action. **Magnificent Machine**
I was lucky enough to be the conductor on this trip
Forget Ameican cars, this is the most American thing ever!
Big boy, what a machine. I ask ware is 844, the living legend. Thats my favorite steam train.. from Puerto Rico, usa.
Earlier this year in April, Ed Dickens, the operational manager of the Union Pacific Steam Program (also the main engineer) stated at the Rocky Mountain Railroad club that he and the steam crew were actually thinking about operating 844 this year, and had thought out plans to do so. They decided against it though because UP 4014 is the main focus of the steam program right now, and they want her to tour the rest of the Union Pacific system since she hasn't yet (the next tour will be in the Pacific Northwest). But, the Steam Crew said after 4014 tours the rest of the system, they would balance running 844 and 4014.
844 ran over a woman because the woman was standing too close to the tracks
@@Remibiggestfanwell that’s not the 844’s fault. The woman was standing too close to the tracks and she paid the price.
Great footage!
Amazing video 😊
Long live the Steam King!
Imagine getting the top engineers from around the world to build a new steamer with new concepts!
Good morning ,👍Nice Fantastic 🚂👌
I wish you good health and a nice day 🌞☕

dit soort zaken hoort bij een gezonde en gelukkige samenleving
It be awesome to see 4014 and 3985 and 1218 and 1309 on the same excursion train that would be awesome to see four great locomotives on the same track at the same time
did it change whistles with 844?
844 was carrying his whistle all this time, now he got it back.
@@jesseusgrantcanales yes, UP replaced 4014 with a new stock whistle, which she weared until this year.
How much does it cost Union Pacific to run steam engine excursion journey’s?
How much would you say it's hauling, what with the diesel power units and all ?
I would say that a good rough guess would be 1000 tons, give or take. . .
The diesel units are backup units serving ad a power sorce to the passenger cars and acting as a backup engine if the steam loco broke down and also serves as a braking unit like the brake tenders
@@Remibiggestfan the diesel locomotives on this train have no abilities to provide power for the coaches. That’s done with a dedicated power cars that have on board generators.
Why did they only do one excursion that year?
The Pacific Northwest excursion was postponed due to supply chain issues.
That shot at 7:21
Gotta love guy at 3:58. Some people just don't get it
what happened to its whistle
Ed swapped it
Too bad it doesn't tour the eastern part of the country 🙁
Reasons why:
1. Would need support from other major railroads
2. Restrictions in the Northeast due to tunnels, bridges, and other things (Conneticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, ect.)
3. Money concerns from both sides
It would be amazing, but I don't know if 4014 could fit some of the eastern lines, especially like Appalachia and the NE. It's part of the reason Steamtown in Pennsylvania hasn't restored 4012 (4014's sibling) despite it being in good condition, they've doubted whether there's enough space to justify operating it.
@@regularguy7266 Probably the best chance of 4014 coming more eastward (at least to some areas) would be if it hauled an America 250 train in 2026, if there is one. But as you said, it likely would be limited in scope. I believe it was Ross Rowland who said in the past that NKP 765 would be PERFECT for such a train in the East, due to its more medium size.
Why need the big boy when you got 1309?
The only problem was that almost all of the major class 1 railroads especially CSX and NS aren’t fans of steam trains! Plus, The Union Pacific won’t allowed their steam fleets to travel off their home rails anymore!
Why did they switch the whistle 😞😑 the old one was soooo much better. F
Because the 844’s whistle happens to belong to 4014
@@upstatenewyorkrailfan6775 I know but the old one sounded better. Historical accuracy aside.
