      This is why I like the technology age we live in. When I was a kid UA-cam was a thing, but we didn't have internet and there wasn't a tutorial for literally everything you can think of like there is now. I had gerbils in cramped conditions because I didn't know better and neither did my parents. Now any pets my kids want, we can actually go and look up how to give them the best life possible.

      You can buy it online but it is expensive, honestly though it’s worth it since you can use it for hamsters and if you diy the lid mice you can also use it for guinea pigs but I recommend a big larger. But if you are still interested you can search up living world eco habitat

    Ive always been confused about tank/cage size for gerbils. Most things ive read have said 10 gallons for one 5 gallons for each additional gerbil. I have 2 gerbils in a tank thats about 40 gallons and 1 in a tank thats about 64 gallons.
    Obviously the bigger the tank the better, but not everyone can afford or has room for the size tank you are suggesting

    • @inspot9932
      @inspot9932 9 років тому +11

      Mit opinion is, that you shouldn't have animals if you haven't much space. I'm from Germany, so I don't know 'Gallon', but I can't understand, why people have animals in small cages. I'm sure, they don't want to live in a small room.. Rodents are "small", but they need much space!
      My gerbils (I have 3) live in a 120cmx60cmx60cm Cage and they are happy. And i couldn't be happy, if they would live in a small cage. And you can see, that your animals are happier in a big cage, because they can dig etc:)
      And some people have (for example) 5 hamsters in small cages. If they don't have much space for big cages, they shouldn't have 5 hamsters!
      I hope it's okay, that I wrote my opinion 😁 :)

    • @ErinsArk
      @ErinsArk  9 років тому +11

      MySweetGerbils I couldn't have put that better! I completely agree with everything you said. Too many people think it's acceptable to house rodents in small cages because 'the pet shops sell them' and because 'they don't need much room as they are only small'. It's a big problem and I hope that one day pet shops sell larger cages as I think they have a big influence on the way we care for our pets :)

      Most of the breeders in my country (Netherlands) warn about the size though. The say it can be too big, causing the gerbils to create different, competing territoria inside the cage, which can lead to fights. However most of the stories I hear from Germany is that they advice bigger cages then that they do in the Netherlands. It's a bit confusing but I think that if you are bright minded you can probablly figure out when a cage is too small.

    Hey I really need advice one of my gerbils lost both top teeth and its bottom teeth got so long we had to clip them. Then we accidentally clipped them too short so that his bottom lip (or whatever you call it) completely conceals his bottom teeth. We give him applesauce and a really great powdered food for gerbils mixed in when he loses teeth. He is grabbing his bottom teeth and opening his mouth wide and overall just looks really uncomfortable having really short teeth. What should we do (or will he just be fine)? I will copy and paste this to a couple of other gerbil youtubers who might know. Also please use the reply instead of just commenting so I get the notification.

    Hi, I have an important question. When my gerbils pee in their sand bath is makes the sand gross and stick to the bottom of the bowl, but in the video there was no sand stuck to the bottom of your bowl. Am I using the wrong kind of sand or what? And even if it didn’t stick to the bottom, how would you filter out the pee when cleaning?

    • @laurasrodents
      @laurasrodents 4 роки тому

      No, you're not using the wrong sand, just she didn't film it or her gerbils do not pee on the sand. Of course you cannot filter the pee, that's why it's important to change it once a week/ every 5 days so that the pee you cannot take out doesn't make the sand accumulate the amonia.
      A tip to take out the stuck by pee sand is to take it out with a spoon, easy .

    Very nice video!
    A biologist advised me to not give my gerbils water just dry food and various veggies as water is not normally found in their natural habitat and they can contract illnesses. Kept them in a classroom for 3 years with never a problem. He advised that if I needed to add another gerbil, place it in a large can with the ends closed with hardware cloth (1/2 square wire mesh) and place it in the cage with the established gerbils for several days. That gave them time to establish the hierarchy. If you don't do this they can fight to the death!

    Very informative, thank you. I just adopted 3 gerbils the other day (all from the same litter and all male) The cage I got seems a little small for three (especially since they don't climb through the plastic tubes) but they all fit in the igloo and they seems to be eating and drinking when they need it. I am thinking of upgrading to a glass house like in the video so I can put more bedding and then add some wood and cool stuff for them to climb on and through.

    hello!
    Im thinking of getting a gerbil/gerbils but I've had a bad experience with biting situation (with a rat) and my mind can't get off the fact that rodents do bite...I'm so attached to gerbils and their personality but the biting part puts me off...
    any suggestions? thx

    • @sageacris
      @sageacris 7 років тому

      the rat probably was just different, more moody, i bet it was just the personality. if you need, year gloves or dont handle them too often! rodents rarely bite.

      rats are very clever and they hold grudges so your rat probably just wasn't handled very well by the pet shop gerbil are generally a lot nicer, if u get them from someone who has raised them well since pups they can even purr in ur hand while ur stroking them (its super cute). or, even better get a boy and a girl and bread them urself.

    Hey there! You’re the first channel that actually has gerbil care videos that I’ve found!! Thank you so much for this video; it’s so lovely!! I’ve always owned hamsters 🐹 but am now interested in getting a pair of gerbils for myself! I see that your cage is made of wood and plexiglass? I want to buy this bin and make it a cage:
    www.target.com/p/40gal-wheeled-latch-box-with-wheels-and-handle-tote-clear-purple/-/A-76149756#lnk=sametab
    It’s a 160qt bin.
    The dimensions are:
    36L x 21H x 18W cage which comes out to
    Roughly 756 square inches. The plastic is extremely thick & I was wondering if that’d be a suitable enclosure... if I add plenty of things for them to do, will they leave the bin alone and not attempt to chew out?
    ALSO: will one wheel be enough for 2-3 gerbils? ☺️
    Thanks!! ❤️❤️

    Can I ask, which brand of wood-shavings do you use? I've seen all your gerbils videos, but couldn't find it. We have only few foreign brands in my country such as Allespan, Allspan, TierWohl or Aubiose. Unfortunately, there aren't any aspen wood-shavings and I can't afford buying them from UK. Could you please tell me, which one of the brands I wrote above is the best for making tunnels and has the smallest amount of dust? I'm sorry for all mistakes! Thank you and everybody else for helping me :-) Also I'm a big fan of your channel, you have the best videos with animal care on UA-cam. Can't wait for another gerbil video :-D Maybe you could show us your gerbils in playpen in the garden, if you do so :-)

    What veggies would you suggest keeping them 100% away from? Which ones are better? I checked your description and didn’t see it. I’ve had a gerbil for a year now and just got a new one a little over a week ago and your videos have definitely helped me out so much. Especially with the split cage method because I had to do it when I got my new gerbil, Peaches. They weren’t getting along at first but now they love each other.
