What are YOU giving up for lent? No worries if it’s private, but it can sometimes be helpful to declare a resolution in an external/public way in order to solidify it.
I typically cue up the youtube video, but mostly listen to the audio while I work on projects. IMO, if you are just listening to audio, it's fine. HOWEVER, if you are actually watching the video the low quality is a bit distracting. Appreciate the work you and your team do.
Fr. Pine mentions that due to his listening of podcast he was finding it difficult to make time to call friends, reminded me that I have been neglecting to call my dad. so I paused this episode and called my dad
This is wonderful. I am Protestant and my faith has been so enriched by these UA-cam videos I have watched and learned from in the past year. This is such a meaningful and thoughtful preparation for Lent and the whole year. Thank you so much for sharing your faith and discussion with the world and myself in particular.
I’m planning to make intentional time for silence in my life, at least 15 minutes a day. Life has been pretty loud lately, and I’ve been hearing the phrase “God is found in silence” a lot the past few weeks. Kinda feels like a sign.
Thanks for reminding me that you can do fasting and penance throughout the year. Lent was a massive flop for me and I'm struggling with some sins that have flared their ugly head again. Once Easter is over I'll be trying again.
Wow. That insight around 22:00. Using social media specifically to be seen and forgetting God always sees you. It is obvious but you know...i didnt think about how the first could be used to 'replace' the later.
Public Service Announcement: If you have a history of an eating disorder, don't try giving up foods or doing other strict fasting practices. I tried starting by just giving up sweets and waiting until 3pm to break my fast last year and kept thinking, "Well this hardly feels penitential. I used to go days at a time on nothing but an apple and sugar-free gum." By the end, I was doing liquid fasts and contemplating restricting water. It was not about God, it was about mental illness and I'm still trying to climb out of that hole I dug myself right now. This year, I'm doing a media fast. Only Catholic books, movies, TV, and podcasts!
I like the video podcasts as an option, because I can see the facial expressions of both you and the guest, which adds another dimension to the conversation.
For lent I'm going to do the fasting and abstinence for food and meat that is standard along with a daily rosary and also am going to donate to a charity once a week
Re: relief on Sundays of Lent As Catholic Christians, every Friday is a "little Good Friday," thus meatless Fridays throughout the year (or other penitential sacrifice). Likewise every Sunday is a "little Easter." No work, no fasting, etc. on Easter. Sundays/sabbath are days of refreshment and renewal. Once I understood the fullness of that spirituality, it wasn't a cop out to have what you'd given up for Lent on Sundays. Proper balance on all things. BUT my experience has also been, at times, that having a taste of the sacrificed thing can make giving it up on Monday harder. 🤔 Of course that could be a positive, too. It's all good in God's design. 🙂
Yo Matt! Love your friendship with Fr. Gregory. Y'all are a blast to watch. I was noticing your merch and have a suggestion :) I'm extroverted and LOVE discussing Thomistic metaphysics. Can there be a sweatshirt for us extroverted folk? Haha, something simple such as: "Willing to discuss Thomistic metaphysics." That is all. Peace!
I liked the split screen and think that it is effective. Even better than face to face because this way we see each of you "face on" all the time instead of in profile like usual. The lighting for Fr Pine was better than for you though, so you might want to give attention to that.
I disagree about the lighting, I feel that Fr. Pine’s lighting was too dark compared to the background. It also seems like he’s being backlit which is almost always to be avoided. Matt’s lighting is better but it could be diffused and made less yellow with a sheet or one of those professional photography thingies (i dont even know the name lol) that you put in front of the light source
Hoooo boy if we only knew the kind of lent we were about to have... I mean, I was still Protestant at the time (confirmed VERY recently), but I can only imagine what a COVID Lent might have looked like
Not that Aquinas would have known the modern science, but with reference to meat and sexual desire, it may be worth noting that meat, especially if it has good levels of zinc, is helpful in maintaining and even boosting testosterone levels. Eating less meat or no meat could have a biological effect on decreasing sex-drive.
This cafeteria style fasting where you choose whatever you want is pretty chaotic and stress inducing for most lay people. In this style of lent, how do you even “complete” a fast? I think the fundamental error here is thinking that Lent is a personal fast. Personal fasts (ones that you choose) should be frequent. Lent is about fasting as a unified community. That’s what it was originally created for, no? The cafeteria style is not very unifying.

Does it count if I simultaneously want to lose weight and quit my alcohol adiction? I mean if part of my goals are worldly, does it count for lent?
Sugar and wheat.

Im excited for lent 2022🙏🏾😊
2023❤
Matt's content is timeless, but his face is much better with a beard
I'm giving up desserts, candy & soda. I chose the three things because I knew if I gave up only one then one of the others would be a replacement.
Praying for Fr. Pine's family as they go through a most difficult time. St. Peregrine, pray for them! Blessed Mother, console them!

One of our priests, (school principal) is challenging the high school students to do an Exodus 40 for Lent!!

please continue uploading all podcasts on youtube!
I love Fr. Pine. All his suggestions really resonated with me. Thank you Matt for inviting Fr. Pine on. Here's to a blessed Lent.

Honestly wasn't expecting to give up so much for Lent last year

I think it's a great idea to have both video and podcast formats. Great stuff!
I like the video podcasts as an option, because I can see the facial expressions of both you and the guest, which adds another dimension to the conversation.
Wow. Awesome conversation. I'm recommending this to everyone.
Love Exodus 90
I've seen others do this style, and I don't think it worked out as well. I love that it's as relaxed as it is.
For lent I'm going to do the fasting and abstinence for food and meat that is standard along with a daily rosary and also am going to donate to a charity once a week
Love Fr Jacques Phillip
Loved that talk Matt, please continue!
Regarding 'giving up' for Lent and possibly not sticking it through: I recommend GK Chesterton's essay, 'A Defence of Rash Vows.'
Saludos cordiales desde la Ciudad de México! Gracias!

COFFEE AND MUSIC

I'd have a horrible time giving up coffee. I'd have to really prepare for it. Ugh. Could I do it? Maybe?
Let's do this together. I'm going to quit alcohol and you're going to quit coffee.
@@michakowal7750 nooooooooo! Okay. I'll do it.

My pastor said not to give up coffee if it's going to be just as much as a penance for others as it is for you, lol!
Please!! Continue recording via Skype. It almost drove me crazy trying to find the odd episodes
I'm doing more spiritual reading (and studying Aquinas 101). I'm giving up some of my phone time.

I like your new profile Matt
“Aw man I am so discouraged by the fact that I am a bum:/ would that I were not a bum”
OK
I'm giving up smoking weed for Lent.
Our pastor said that giving up a vice doesn't count, bc you shouldn't be doing it anyway.

What about fasting for the sins of the world such as for all the aborted babies?
Is anyone else bothered by the ad that played before the video? "sex abuse attorney"
