From my own personal experience flying Charter Flights to popular Holiday destinations like Tenerife with British Midland Airways…..The Charters were flown by BM on behalf of Air2000, during their busy summer schedule….’Non Radar’ airfields were very common in locations such as the Greek Islands, and at many ‘out of the way’ destinations, even as late as 1999!……Whenever we were approaching our destination at ‘Non-Radar’ airfields, we would always configure our Boeing 737-400 (the type BM used on its charter flights) early…..Had Dan Air 1008 brought their speed back to around 170 kts, they would’ve been able to establish on track with a much smaller turning circle….Early flap deployment would’ve also greatly helped maintain their separation from the slow moving Iberia F-27 Friendship…..With reduced airspeed, they probably wouldn’t have been required to take up that Non-Standard Holding Pattern, the one that caused all the confusion in the first place!……A key Take Away point from this disaster: If the Pilots were unsure of exactly what was being asked of them, why didn’t they simply ASK ATC to Clarify the instruction??….And, why did ATC give the crew a Sudden and Convoluted Holding-Pattern that wasn’t even published??….Why didn’t ATC simply state that they were catching slower traffic and instruct the crew to simply maintain a Track Outbound from the NDB??….A track that would take them out over the sea until they were clear of the traffic, then descended them to 3000 feet and turn left to intercept the Extended Runway Centreline for Runway 12…..Then this terrible tragedy would Never have happened!
I had never heard of this tragedy until recently. RIP to all those who lost their lives in the crash of Dan-Air flight 1008 and condolences to the loved ones they left behind. 😔🙏
I was in Tenerife in 2018 and went to the area around the mount of La Esperanza / La Rosario. It was very eerie from a distance knowing of the crash and even on a mid summer day there was a lot of mist around it. On visiting Los Rodeos just earlier, you could see the airport very rapidly misting over without warning. Benefit of hindsight and all that. RIP all that lost their lives in both accidents.
The crew's total loss of situation awareness, which culminated in an inadequate terrain escape maneuver, is mind boggling. Coming in balls out, navigating inaccurately, showing no awareness of their surroundings (otherwise, how would they have proceeded offtrack below the MSA towards high ground?) and very little sparial orientation... A display of poor airmanship and low professionalism that caysed the loss of all on board dor no reason. The holding clearance given by the substandard Spanish controller was the catalyst but the crew really was responsible for rhis mess.
Thanks for another very thorough and very well presented accident analysis! Splendid job both, in regard of presentation and professional competence. I am slowly catching up past videos as I have become aware of your channel and subscribed only lately. Kind regards from a ret. ATP from Switzerland! Charles
The use of the timer counting down to impact is really useful and compelling. I actually prefer you reading the radio communications aloud much more than the slightly jarring robot voices you've used for those parts in other videos. In any case your dedication to meticulous technical and analytical detail is really appreciated! Hope your work here gets a bit more attention
At 4:22 does anyone understand the airspace designation? Seems like a Class B and D over laying themselves. I looked at an updated sectional online and it has a similar overlay but the sector altitudes make more sense, upside down wedding cake style.
I know that this was a charter flight....but isn't 138 passengers a pretty tight fit for a 727-100? I'm used to the 727 accidents with 100+ casualties mainly with the 200 model.
I love your videos, but you speak in a volume that's way too low, and I can't understand you even when I put the volume at 100%. Will you please speak way up?
You've got a new subscriber here! What a stellar video!! I have an extensive library of aviation things and I can help translate if you ever want to do something from Sweden/Denmark/Norway! Just holler at me and I'll help!

Dan Air had a number of fatal accidents, and I'm guessing that's the reason why I often heard them being referred to as Dan Dare when I was a kid.
Dan Dare, a wing and a prayer
What about aeroflot, comrade. Dan Air had a record better than most. Air Chance for one.
They bought over the years a lot of old aircraft of many different types / marks.
Dan Dare was a brave hero in the Eagle comic in 1960s.
Underrated, you deserve subs for the amount of work you do!
Massively underrated! Love the vid from ireland❤

Fantastic, dramatic story telling voice and very well researched. Many thanks for taking the time and trouble to make these.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing channel. As good as Disaster Breakdown and Mentour Pilot. Your approach to detail is outstanding.
Many thanks @NicElderGoth. Appreciate the kind words & support 👍
I love your channel, how do I support it?Post instructions for how to buy you a coffee.
Really appreciate that @kenitomendez. Just click the link above in the discription 👍

This reminds me of Inex Adria flight 1308 just a year later... They had nearly identical loss of awareness and crashed into the mountain on Corsica.
Superbly produced video 🎉
Many thanks alistair for the kind words 👍
Man, Kelsey and Peter better watch out because there's a new million+ aviation channel on the rise
😂 …….. 🤞It’s been slow progress though, so far. Thanks for the support & kind words.
HOW SAD
I love your videos, but you speak in a volume that's way too low, and I can't understand you even when I put the volume at 100%. Will you please speak way up?
From the very first line of the intro, this was riveting.
As ever littlespinycactus, really appreciate the support 👍
Appreciated
First officer and navigator could have given the captain more help. That's what they are there for...Sad

A friend of my Dad lost both of his parents on that flight
