As sensational as your dry, composed monologues are - watching you interact (however disconnected) with your audience is a delight. More of this, please.
Being away from your family is a serious note everyone in filmmaking should take. I'm not even in the big leagues and I would love to, but at the same time I've been weary of this problem. being away 2-3 months ocassionaly is understandable but being away 6+ months while starting a family is hard. I love my family, and I've been considering to change career or at least come to terms that I will not achieve my dream of becoming a DP if I keep down this path. That's why I have tried to focus on color grading now
Hahahahah!!! I narrowly avoided a harsh dressing down. I see the key to the argument. To each their own. If its your production and in charge of everything then its all good.
@wanderingdp excuse the puns Hehe. I am really digging all of the 💎 gems you have dropped since forever. Likely one of the best lighting resources on the Internet.
Broad and narrow/short key are pretty common terms where I work. Also broad lighting can be very beautiful. Its cool that you feel most comfortable shooting on the shadow side, there's nothing wrong with that, but I don't think you should say any other way of shooting is wrong or ugly. Anyways love the podcast keep up the good work lol.
In a strange way, this video showed me more about who you are...like you showed us your vulnerabilities more than usual. It was great. Your channel is very good and even though I know more than you and am a better cinematographer than you, I still watch ;) Jokes aside, thanks for keeping it real. You're doing great for many, no doubt.
If anybody is wondering if the paid course is worth the money, here's my honest review: it totally is and there's nothing else like that out there. The Advanced Cinematography is his biggest and most complete course (A to Z on a single imaginary commercial project). Patrick is very system-driven, he breaks everything down in stages and processes and lists your goals and priorities for every stage. But be aware that this is a course about the realities of THE JOB. It has 0 info on cameras and lenses and movement, it's not about the creative part at all, it's about the managerial and planning parts. Even lighting is discussed systemically as it pertains to blocking and coverage and scheduling the shot list and making the day, of course while delivering the Framework look. Not saying this as a negative, just be aware what it is and what it's not. Every year for the past few years I save up to buy a new instalment of BODVO system every Black Friday and I'm thankful to Patrick for doing these sales, otherwise it would be prohibitively expensive for a lot of people.
hi . i noticed on your youtube description you use photek softlighter . i have the aputure dome iii softbox and its not giving a soft enough light on the face even if i get it close to the person. will this photek give me a softer light because im on the go camping and cant have c-stands and diffusion panels. if i need one single modifier what do you recommend? thanks
Thanks for the reply! Totally understandable. I of course stand by my request for my work to be judged by you, I think I can take it. But maybe you're right, depending on the day I'm one critique away from a good shower cry.🤣 Regardless, thanks for taking the time!
Off the wall question... saw the gear list and the photek softlighter listed as key modifier... and I'd never heard of anyone using one with a cob light. Are you using the front diffusion? Love the look.
You have a gift. I Love it. Too much fluff in the World. Imagine how much more we could do and get done if we just spoke in a way that was this direct. Nice.
I know this vid is a bit older and the comment exercise is over but the amount of sarcastic reverse psychology painful truth we get on this channel Is top tier. The world needs more of this. As an aspiring filmmaker everyone lies to you and tells you you’re good because they don’t want to be the bad guy or gal. But here, we’re told you’re not as good as you think you are but also not as bad as your inner voice tells you. So thank you. You always say the things I need to hear in order to grow.
What's the usual price for the course? I need to know how much I'm saving, so I feel good about myself and my astute propensity for jumping on a good thing when I see it.

the more comments i get the more videos i can do
2 questions:
1. Can you critique some of your own work?
2. What are some examples of really good downstage lighting?
I think he did a color grade video with his footage and said some bad things about his own work, i love it
1. Yes I have done over 100 of my own commercials on the wandering dp podcast. youtube is trickier with permissions and what not
Patrick. You are just saying what we are all thinking. Gold mate!
Appreciate the humor in your videos.
Glad you like them!
Man you are way to humble. I just saw your reel on your website. It had me emotional and shit. Your stuff is so damn beautiful!
i'd get emotional watching my 2018 reel as well. All the dreams I had then that have since been crushed. another life

Getting only semi-roasted for my comment? I expected a Barbecue
Honored that you liked my comment. The glorification of being a one man band must end now. 🤣

This man's honesty and charcter is even better than his cinematographey 😆👏❤️🔥
Jesus, stop being so funny. I'm mean, seriously, I'm trying to work.
The t shirt/wall separation really sells your backlight, wrap, neg style.
What lights would you recommend that are inexpensive or on the cheap side for a Gaffer to have or invest in?

I will have a look
Great video, couldn't stop laughing!
If you ask the Wandering DP a snarky question/comment you'll get a Rugby-like answer.
Great video.
exactly

yes

Working on set with you would be a good day's work.
