@@michele9159 I believe he planned this out to be his defense from the start. I think with all of the research he was doing on past shooters and mental illness was to learn how to malinger and play to his own diagnoses. I think it was based on the national conversation on mental illness and gun violence. He saw an opportunity to do this and possibly get away with it. Ik I can't prove that and I don't mean there were no mental disorders present with that pos, but I believe that his behavior and claims made after his arrest, were part of an act to exaggerate for leniency.

Really who suffers? It isn't the one who gets a quick painless death. Also nothing is bringing those children back, death or an entire life in prison, either way the pain the family feel isn't going away, no matter what sentence the murderer gets.

He will stand before the real judge one day that's the sentence he needs to be really worried about. It's sad I don't believe his sorry for taking so many lives or he would have never done it in the first place. God knows his heart and it's not right what he did to the victims or the families. But if he didn't get the death penalty for this then I don't know if anyone should.

6:59 I feel for this father who lost his beautiful daughter. However, the act was not "excused". Serving life in prison is no picnic, and I would argue that it is harder to serve life, completely restrained, than it is to being put (peacefully) to death.

Yet everyone on Death Row (other than Gary Gilmore) has fought like hell not to be executed. Somehow that makes me think that perpetrators believe life in prison is better than death by execution.

"Completely restrained"?.. you mean with internet and weightrooms, friends and laughter, ping pong and never having to work for food, shelter, medical care, post-high school education programs.... monsters shouldn't be entitled to any of that after they wipe life out so callously and without remorse or empathy. If we are "too civilized" to end their lives (like they deserve) then we sure as hell shouldn't all have to foot the bill support their life til they die of natural causes... there should be an island or something somewhere where they may go support their own life...

While I can understand the family's anger and pain, the justice system is not run on anger and pain.
"Competent to stand trial" and "sane" are not the same thing. A person who's mentally ill COULD be competent to stand trial; and if a jury feels that the defendant is mentally ill then they CAN'T return the death penalty. That's the law. And the Jurors were obligated to do their duty as per the law. Their job was not to be avenging angels on behalf of the families. Jurors are not finders of law; they're fingers of fact. And if the jury instructions include that they can't return the death penalty if they are convinced that the defendant is mentally ill, then that's what they have to do. That's their JOB.
This is exactly WHY family members and people who knew the victims are not allowed to be jurors.

He will never again walk by a stream, walk through the trees, see wildlife and nature and feel freedom which should never be underestimated. This monster will never enjoy any type of normal life and will always be looking behind him coz he'll be targeted, I have no doubt on that. The families must take comfort in each other and know that those who lost their lives would want their family to continue in as best way they can, for them.

There is no way a CEO of a mental health org and a self-proclaimed mental health advocate should have EVER have been on that jury. ESPECIALLY when Nikolas Cruz's mental issues were a major issue. There is no way a person in her position would be able to ignore her own expertise and bias in judging rather than judging based ONLY on what was presented during the trial. I thought the prosecution did an excellent job but not excusing this juror during voir dire was a huge mistake imo. Anyone with any connection to the mental health industry should not be on that jury.

I love when family members sat "they didn't do the right thing" because the family didn't get the justice they wanted. Even if he had gotten death it would be 15, 20, 30 years before he is put to death... Having a family member that was murdered and the murderer never found, he should grateful for what they did get. Life in prison. We will never get that for my uncle's murder or some 20 year bs, like my friend Michelle Tuenmire's murderer got. It's all about perspective.

So exactly how did the hold outs determine mental illness when defense didn't bring any evidence of mental illness. The presumed mitigation was:
Fetal Alcohol syndrome, disruptive behavior and learning disabilities. Those are not mental illness mitigations. He was diagnosed with antisocial behavior and some learning disabilities. The defense's experts did not conclusively prove Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
The prosecution rebuttal blew the learning disabilities and Fetal Alcohol syndrome out of the water. He was shown to be very intelligent and articulate in the interviews. When ALL documents were addressed about his birth there was absolute proof he had no FAS. The antisocial behavior was done because the teachers never held NC accountable for it. It was always the "schools fault"
    Absolutely zero mitigation was proven.
I myself am not for the DP but I would have voted for it because a juror is supposed to put aside his own beliefs and follow the law.
The three jurors lied under oath.
