This song is about broken dreams, aspirations and a lost sense of purpose. It's a beautifully written song. Symbolic of growing older and losing our dreams to be astronauts, pro wrestlers, beauty queens, gold medal winners, movie and rock stars then having to settle on the reality of a 9-5 life that is ultimately less fulfilling than the lives we all dream about when we're young
toy story managed to put in two of the coolest songs in one movie, this one being one of the saddest songs i've ever heard and the You've got a friend in me - one of the happiest songs i've heard in a child's movie
Randy made these songs specifically for Toy Story, so i've come to the conclusion that it's basically about Buzz. His entire "life" he's believed he's an inter-galactic space traveler, and now he's coming to the realisation that this isn't so. The part "I could fly if I wanted to!" is him trying to deny this... and then the end, again, when he ultimately realises that everything he's believed is a lie. Apart from this, I absolutely adore this song! Toy Story = my childhood
I was only 4 when i saw Toy Story in the cinema. I'm 18 now and i'm still totally hyped for Toy Story 3, I'm ready to relive some great childhood memories :D

This video reminds me of a few years ago. I got up on a railing and tried flying to a window. Instead, I fell and my arm fell off. It was at this moment I realized that I was, in fact, a toy. I then went crazy and thought i was Mrs. Nesbit for a while, until my friend slapped me. Good memories.

I saw one comment saying that this songs says the opposite, and about Buzz kinda flying in the end.. I think it's about him accepting reality, but then he achieve his goal in a different way, in a newer perspective, as if all the weights have been lifted off his shoulders. I think this song's about accepting reality as it is, and then getting over it and thrive once
I feel i can really relate to this song. I recently got into a drama school, and was so excited to finally hit the tough road to become an actor. But I found out I couldn't take out a suitable loan to fund my course, and had to pay a deposit in a short amount of time. Despite lots of support from the school and friends, I had to give up the opportunity :( And it felt like all my dreams came crushing down at once, like the lyrics in this song :( i'll never give up sailing/acting tho...

@Xienux It's about Buzz's feelings after he realizes he's a toy. The ship that "sailed far beyond the moon" was the spaceship Buzz imagined he had as a space ranger. All the "brave things he'd done", his adventures (as seen in Buzz Lightyear of Star Command) vanished after he realized they were not real. I could go on, but I guess that's all that really needs to be said at this point... ^^;

This can be for more than Buzz Lightyear. If you've played Final Fantasy X before, you would know that after the party enters Beville Temple and they see the machina there, you could play this song for Wakka when he sees the teachings are all lies.
@philipsdisc1 Ironic, isn't it??? This is most-definitley a Buzz Lightyear song, no question about it. Buzz realizing that his entire life, everything he believed in, thought, knew about himself, etc. are complete lies & they never happened.; I agree. Mainly, the part where he tries to fly out the window at Sid's house, he fails at it & he realizes that Woody was right, the whole time in terms of Buzz being just a toy, he's completely crest-fallen & in denial, over it. Perfect!
@Xienux 365rl, I applaud your description, but I'm afraid Xienux may have been referring to what Randy Newman was implying in the song's lyrics, rather than its purpose in Toy Story. Randy is imagining/dreaming of himself as the captain of a ship (a vessel) that is capable of flying through space. I'm sure you've seen artist depictions of such. Quite simply, he produces these scenes in his head, but is never granted the opportunity to actually fly, or sail, or live the life he dreams of.
