    Ahh you youngsters! I am of the age that I was around for the quartz revolution. You have to remember, watches back then we’re first and foremost tools with which to tell the time, secondary was brand or looks. Everyone needed a watch. So, imagine that scenario where you have a mechanical watch that perhaps on average kept time to around 30-60 seconds a day and every few years you had to spend money to have it serviced and when that was happening you were without a watch as most owned just one watch. So, along comes quartz, all that was needed was to change the battery every year or so which was quick and cheap and adjust it twice a year for daylight savings as it was so accurate. This was a premium purchase back then, it was cutting edge and showed that you were living in the future, not the past! Man, who wants an inaccurate, prone to shocks mechanical when you can have this amazing technology that meant you never needed to adjust, wind or service your watch!
    I remember the day I got my first quartz, it felt like I had stepped out of the dark ages! Oh and those were the days when people swam with 30m water resistance ratings!

      So, if the watch is from a legit manufacturer, and the 30 meters is legit, you can absolutely swim with it. Dive with it even. 30 meters is about 100 feet, which is the limit for most recreational divers. It's fine!

      Anyway, on my reduced speedy I've found in watch service manual(Omega caliber 1140) a notice about that:
      To set the minute hand, turn the crown forwards or backward. To synchronize the minute hand with the small seconds hand, the minute hand should be advanced about 30 to 45 seconds from the desired marker. (This procedure is normal to the design of this caliber). The energy transmission from the movement to the hands goes through three wheels. The play between the theeth of these three wheels must be compensated when setting the time by positioning the minute hand 30 to 45 seconds fast.
      And I should say that is a pretty hard to align it perfectly. So I'm wondering how many calibers got this behaviour...

I am new to the Hobby, and up until recently, my one and only watch was a Citizen Echo Drive, Perpetual Calendar, Atomic Time, with an E650 movement, Sapphire Crystal, 200 M water resistance, etc. Bottom line is it’s a beautiful timepiece with every feature I can think of and it was just over $300 when purchased new. I recently added an Orient Blue Ray 11 which I really enjoy, yet it runs around 90 seconds/fast/day, which is very frustrating. I just purchased a Seiko Presage Cocktail Time with the Power Reserver Complication. It’s an attractive watch and keeps fantastic time, running only 15 seconds/fast/day. Great video man. I had the Bulova moonwatch in my hands this past week. It looks amazing, especially the dial. Pus it has a great high frequency quartz movement. I believe it should be on this list for sure. It looks great and offers lots for the money.

    • @hoppysport2872
      @hoppysport2872 5 років тому +1

      I love the list, but I completely agree with you on the Bulova Moonwatch. I've owned a Speedmaster Professional and enjoy the Bulova equally. Hit the chrono button and the second hand is as smooth or smoother than any manual or automatic. And it's just about the most accurate watch made. I have the bracelet model and it looks like a million bucks.

    • @AKSD1985
      @AKSD1985 5 років тому +1

      @@hoppysport2872 I don't know if I can justify spending over 4k for a moon watch. I see that it looks nice on the backside and really nice in the front. However, the moon watch is similar in quality I am sure. Yes it is a high quality quartz watch, but is it really that shitty of a watch and this is why it costs 10 times less? I saw it in person 2 weeks ago, and the dial looks almost the same as the moonwatch. Is the omega really worth that kind of money? I mean how frequently would I have to service it if worn on occasion? The average service interval that is? How will it hold its value over time?

    • @hoppysport2872
      @hoppysport2872 5 років тому +1

      @@AKSD1985 I bought my Omega Speedmaster used in 1988 for $375. I sold it a few years ago for $2,000 on ebay. It needed $800 in repairs. I had added a genuine Omega skeleton back that a jeweler friend got for me for $25 and a newer bracelet for $140. I sold the original OEM bracelet for $400 and the original case back for $175.
      I intended to buy a new Speedmaster at some point...then the Bulova Lunar Pilot Moonwatch was released. I will never buy the Speedmaster. The Bulova is beautifully crafted, and the movement is a technological wonder. Frankly it looks just as good as the Speedmaster.
      If I were to make changes, I'd add a domed crystal. That's about it.

      @@hoppysport2872 Wow that was a while ago. Was your speedy a manual wind 1861 movement? So your recommendation is to go with the bulova instead or is the speedy that much better? I mean 4k is a lot when you have toddlers growing. Do omegas really hold their value vs. Rolex submariner or sea dwellers? I don't think so, but I wouldn't know. Please let me know what you think?

    • @hoppysport2872
      @hoppysport2872 5 років тому +1

      @@AKSD1985 My Speedmaster had the 1861. It was from 1971. I loved the watch but didn't want to invest another $800 into it. The bezel also was nicked.
      The Speedmaster Professionals have gone up so much in price that it's hard to say if they will hold their value. If you have the money, why not? That said, I get just as much satisfaction and pleasure out of my Bulova Lunar Pilot Moonwatch.
      The back of the Bulova is even more beautiful than the Speedy. I do like the saucer subdials on the Speedy better than the Bulova's. However, the Bulova has a much nicer dial with so many levels.
      If I were buying the Bulova, I would definitely buy the bracelet model. It's really a quality bracelet and actually reminiscent of the bracelet from my old circa 1971 Speedy bracelet, only much nicer.
      You can buy the Bulova for under $500. That 10x less than the Speedy. It all depends if you want a mechanical watch. I don't care because the Bulova movement is just so perfect.

    TT nothing wrong with a quartz watch, like many others I love watching the mechanics of an open case back with a vast majority of my collection being automatics. Since becoming fully addicted over the past year to the small MB market I have purchased many quartz watches that I love. This video brought back some nostalgia from 20+ years ago when I bought my first brand name watch that kicked off my watch collecting addiction the Tag Heuer Kirium (Quartz) & the one thing I remember was that I had this watch that I could wear in the shower & swim with at the beach. Before that I was wearing Seiko's, Citizens & even had a Casio Calculator watch (several from memory). Another excellent video, keep up the good work.

    The Grand Seiko quartz I'd want is the GMT limited aniversary model with the green dial. I like G-shocks (well the rectangular cased ones anyway). I wouldn't pay the price for one of the metal cased ones, but the one for $50 is a perfect beater watch. That Hamilton has always been cool. It's hard to get more retro 70's than that. There's a new Citizen diver GMT that apparently is only available in Italy currently. It's one of the few that has a GMT function but keeps a dive bezel. I don't dive, but the minute timer bezel is useful.

    I'd placed Seiko 7546/8/9, 7Ax8 and Pulsar's Y513/4 over the 7C4X series as they were the first mechanical quartz movements to combine accuracy/reliability to the market. It's easy (or given) to spend money to develop a movement only a few can afford but it takes a true visionary to make it affordable for everyone.
