- A deadly and destructive derecho blasted across the Midwest on Monday, packing wind gusts at over 100 mph. Several tornadoes caused damage to communities on the storm's nearly 500 mile long path. FOX 9’s meteorologist Cody Matz has more.

I know the weather in the northeast has been changing for a while now. We have a lot more tornados than in past years, & the clouds remind me of what we used to see down south. It's like the weather patterns have changed. :(
I got caught in a car during the south Minneapolis derecho of 2013. That was wild. Got off the road in the shadow of a commercial building and watched trees blowing down along the street in front of us. Had to pick our way through whatever unblocked streets we could find to get home. Every curb tree on our end of the block was down; several cars were smashed.

This had to of been the scariest storm ive ever been in.
I have never heard of such a storm before. It was so terrifying to watch. I felt so bad for the elderly couple if one of the stories. It makes you appreciate life so much & never, ever take anything for granted, because it can change in an instant
That trash can went down the street faster than the car LOL. Only thing missing is a speed camera photo.

I live near Chicago. It was real bad here, my garbage can blew way. Very terrifying I could not get into my basement, have broken hip, so I can't move fast. Where I am reports of tornadoes around my place. Also reports of 10 tornadoes on the ground at once. Lost power for about 6 hours and consider myself lucky.

@waitaminute7257 From Google: According to the National Weather Service, a derecho is a widespread, long-lived wind storm associated with rapidly moving showers and thunderstorms. A derecho can cause wind speeds typically seen in tornadoes, but does so in one direction along a “straight swath,” according to the NWS.
So even the weather is here illegally

"Derecho" is also the Spanish word for "straight", in reference to the straight winds of the massive storm line. Ironically, a derecho hit the Detroit area during the 1980 Republican Convention there that nominated Ronald Reagan, and now last night a derecho brushed Milwaukee on the opening night of this year's Republican gathering there.
