I was at the Packard Museum a few days ago for the first time. I really enjoyed my visit, and the young man at the door was very informative and friendly.
All the Packard cars are so fancy and lovely! Sometimes I wonder what it would have been like to drive around in the old days when the cars were as nice as these. 😍😍😍
Our family had a 1948 Packard that was simply wonderful, dependable, comfortable, quiet and performed quite well. Mom cried when it got hard to find parts for it after having it for years, and she and Dad sold it.

I bought a 1940 Packard right out of High School. Around 1968 or 9, don’t exactly remember. Cost me $250. Was not in great shape but it ran and the interior was not all tore up. Man did I have fun cruising around in that old car. Lots of weed got smoked in that old Packard!
I have a fascination with 1930’s streamline cars because of their exotic shape and designs, they look fast just standing still. Packard and Dusenberg made some of the most beautiful cars in the early years of American automobiles.
Packard closed the Detroit plant in 1956, after the '56 Packards were built. Packard got screwed royally by Studebaker when they merged. Most every Packard built after 1956 was really a Studebaker with Packard badges......
@@milojanis4901 Yes, the infamous "Stude-Packards." Like most independents, Packard was in trouble by mid '50s, but was still relatively stable. Studebaker merger would finally kill them off. Too late they realized they'd hitched up to a sick horse. Ironically, Packard really didn't go "belly up," they fought to bitter end, but the parent company backing merger made the call. Production ceased in '56. I'd never get to be "the man who owns one." Old derelict plant is to be finally demolished.
visited the Packard Museum last week. It was great!! We got some 'guided tour' from the guy at the desk....and apologies for not recalling his name....but many thanks to him. Beautiful cars!!

I toured this museum in 2017. Itis housed in an old restored Parkard dealership from the 20's. I remember the red 53 Caribbean convertible had belonged to Perry Como and the hearse was used in the movei The Godfather. It is certainly worth at least a couple hours for the visit.
The hearse with the purple interior I was able to look inside one while it was being used for a funeral service about 2 years ago. It had the same interior, color and all.

My Dad worked for Packard after graduating HS in 35 until 45 as a Tool and Die Maker. Where during the war he worked on the RR Merlin prototype engines that they wanted to use in the P38 fighters. He often used to walk through the 2nd floor where they built the custom bodied cars. In particular he mentioned the 40 Packard Darrin. Before the war my Dad and Uncle wanted to buy a used mid 30s "Big" Packard. My Grandfather told them not to buy the car if the owner stopped at the gas station on the corner. He did and they didn't. Very thirsty cars. In 40 my Dad bought a maroon 110 convertible which he always said was the best car he ever owned. After the war he bought a 48 Super 8 which wore out the motor very quickly. Dad called a friend at Packard who told him that they were using "Green Blocks." Dad sold the Packard and bought a dark blue 50 Dodge Coronet which he kept till he bought a Corvair in late 62. Packard until WW2 was the pre eminent car mfg in the USA. You were a somebody if you owned a Packard. The advertising was "go ask a man who owns one." It was the standard to beat. After the war Packard faded..due to styling and quality issues. Where Cadilliac, Lincoln and even Chrysler Imperials rose to the fore front of luxury automobiles. I imagine if I were to own a 30s Classic it would be a Packard Straight 8 cause the Twin 6 would be too dm thirsty to keep filled up.

But, after the miserable collapse, He lost everything！Even his live.I've ever heard his weired story by my grand mom.And after her death, I knew'bout the truth was just only me among my relatives so far. Anyway,at last,this American outstanding Auto has been special one in my heart. I was watching SHERLOCK HOLMES in Washington (1943) starring Basil Rathbone. When the car pulled up in front of the rail car, the grill "told" me it was a Packard!!!

Love the quality that went into the Packards. Surprisingly, Packard survived all the way up to the dual headlight era. The overall design at the end got a bit wacky. Love the cars at the end of the video with the hood scoops. Were they functional ?
@Steven Gird starting in the late forties,Cadillac knocked the shit out of Packard and Lincoln, style and performance were way ahead of anything Packard had, that’s what killed the brand, not Studebaker like some think, they were not willing to adapt......
I just stumbled on this tour. Thank you for posting it. My Granddaddy had a 1953 Mayfair that he traded in on a 1955 Clipper Super Panama. I got it in the will and my ex wife conveniently (for her) got rid of it. I WANT IT BACK! In the same condition it was in when she got rid of it. But alas, I don't think that will ever happen.

This museum is dedicated to displaying real and running Packard, not replicas. Also it is focusing more on the history of the company as well as the showing the cars themselves.
@@uniquelymadison Thank you for the reply, but the Addams did have a real Packard with the only changes being a vulture hood ornament/radiator cap and a large circular squeeze horn attached to the driver's door. It was a convertible with seats dressed up to the back of the car and no trunk. The wheels were dish discs with large spool center caps. But due to so much internet misinformation, I don't know the year which could be anywhere from 1925 to 1931. I KNOW it is NOT a 1933 V 12 as stated on some sites. Anyway I was just hoping to see the car in its original form. Thank you.
The two finest cars to ever come out of America were Packards and Duesenberg's, the Duesenberg's were loud and raucous machines that were the powerhouse of the road built more for a rich playboy, while the Packard's had more of an emphasis on being smooth and quiet built more for a rich family, both were built with the highest standards and quality, I myself would have gone for the Duesenberg, but that's just me.
I was there in 99, and enjoy it and be pround to be an american employee that time @packard electric 👍 and missed the opportunity to get a packard for 8000 USD prod Year 38 didn'd remember the type, it was a town car 4 doors and seats... 👍
When I was born, my young parents had a pristine 1941 Packard Straight Eight 8 passenger limousine with jump seats, dual side mount tires and every conceivable option that Packard offered that year. Right down to the flower vases in the interior and the liquor cabinet in the rear, and the footrests. My father said it drank gasoline so fast he could watch the gas gauge needle fall as they drove around. Finding a used good car right after WW2 was problematic, and in 1946 my father bought the Packard from the back row at a used car dealer for $150.00. NO ONE was interested in a car like that then. Later on, he traded it for a 1940 LaSalle Coupe with a V8. I don't remember the Packard, but I do remember the LaSalle.
Amazing how there'll be a spell where a car like that is considered almost worthless then years later it's priceless. I laugh all the time at the look on a young gear heads face when I explain to them that when I was in high school in the early 80's the muscle cars from the late 60's and early 70's that go for huge money on Barrett-Jackson were $500 to $1,500 because most of society at that point considered them worthless, nobody wanted them, they were looked at as just 10 to 15 year old used cars that were gas hogs nobody wanted. Worse than that was the original Dodge Charger Daytona and Plymouth Superbirds, when they came out nobody wanted them, they'd sit on a dealer's lot for a year or two quite often with the wing on the back that everyone looked at like a bad rash being removed by the dealership in an attempt to sell them, now they're $100,000 and up for one. Just amazing how that works.
@@dukecraig2402 Daytona's and Superbird's are selling for a lot more than $100,000, a Daytona sold for $900,000 not too long ago, half million is not uncommon. Around 1980 I bought a 1967 Nova II with a 327 for $300, that car is probably worth 20 or 30 grand now.
@@bigredc222 Some of them are selling for that much but certainly not all of them, it all depends on which motor and options they have and how original and unrestored one is, Hemi's with manual gearboxes are considered the prize especially if one's unrestored in mint condition, but if any of the former owners of one is anything like me it certainly won't be in mint condition. When I was a kid in about 73 or 74 there was a used car lot at the bottom of the hill from where I live that I could see from my bedroom window, I remember a yellow one, either a Daytona Charger or Superbird, sitting on that lot for quite a while, I can remember seeing it with snow on it and seeing it through the leaves on the trees, needless to say one of those things wouldn't sit for that long for sale these days. It's amazing how it's nothing more than people's perceptions that determine whether a car is worth $1,000,000 or $1,500. Oh how I'd love to be able to go back in time to 1980 and buy up a bunch of cars and bring them back to present day, I'd probably make enough money to buy Twitter.

Thanks for sharing, so sad that their demise ended up in 1958 being nothing but a “badge engineered” Studebaker. Same fate with Hudson, they ended their life the last couple years as a Nash.
The cars are of course magnificent, but Dayton, Ohio is no place for a Packard museum. Warren makes sense as the first cars came from there, and these two museums are to close together.

Cars back in the 30’s and 40’s were works of art as well as engineering. Cars today are practical and boring. They all look the same to me.

Actually most of these do get driven, almost all of the them are working cars.
The blue one at 9:18 is not a Packard, it is a Studebaker with Packard badges.
