    Nice, simple and very economical. Used this design on my 4 metre long retaining garden bed using 150mm x 50mm H4 timber, 100mm galvanised screws and with eziflow drainage behind. Best part is you only need to use the one size timber for posts and retainers. In New Zealand I find "sleepers" are quite pricey so the merch grade timber I bought did the trick. 🤘🏾

    What is preventing this wall from bulging out, after time, since you did not include a deadman every few feet? Also, what about drainage? Thank you.

    • @pimptrizkit5317
      @pimptrizkit5317 7 років тому

      It might bulge. But he has a lot of wide posts, that covers a large horizontal percentage, and if they are cemented well and deep enough, it should be fine for a while. And your right, it does not appear he added drainage, which would add another 20-30 years (or more) to the walls life.

  • @tedwheelock4547

    At 3:21 the cap is shown screwed into the post... There is a second screw. What is that screwed into? Not the post? Looks like the rail? Must not be where the rails butt up against each other... thick rails.. No concern for drainage behind wall?

    • @tonyl1984
      @tonyl1984 5 років тому

      harrison tafea probably used post mix which typically sets hard within 15 minutes of putting the post into position. Once post is in make up temporary batten angle supports until post is solid

    • @tonyalways7174

      It’s ready mix (sometimes called Post Crete or Post Fix). Get it in any big box or hardware store (Lowe’s etc). Just add water and poke it to remove any air pockets and it sets in about 15-30 minutes.

      Yes, it's going to rot. No drainage, and even pressure treated is not immune to rot. If you want permanent you're going to have to use stone.

    • @NightWind420
      @NightWind420 8 років тому

      My thought at first too. I notice other vids showing timber retaining walls also has the posts visible or facing out. Is it better to hide the sleeper's end where they meet, or hide the posts...

    • @tle7812
      @tle7812 8 років тому +3

      if you think about it, the horizontal lumber is being held back by the posts against the movement of the soil. If the timber was on the other side it would be only a matter of time before the soil pushes them and the nails or screws out of the posts. It doesn't look as good but it's way stronger than putting them the other way.
