Also, in the future when the HDD wears out, I might do a fresh install on an NVME SSD rather than getting a 2.5 inch (SATA) SSD. Is that possible with this laptop?
Would be great if I could just get rid of the HDD and simply run everything on an NVME in the spare slot available!

Hi PC Monkey, I've tried unsuccessfully to replace my Aspire 3 A314 HD with a its cloned SSD, when I boot up, it gave a "NO Bootable Device: error. I tried to follow the link you suggest for that message, but the A314 Bios dont have the option to select Legacy and UEFI. The Boot menu is blank. Can you do a video on how to solve this error. Thank you
Yep had a similar problem. Excellent video but when new SSD is installed how to get it recognised. Also the reason for for the switch is my old HDD crashed. So have a Seagate backup but exe is incompatible with w10. Did not have the liscence key. Is this on the backup ?

When I replace my HDD with an SSD my laptop is saying that there is no bootable drive but I tried the SSD in another laptop which worked fine. Any solutions for this?

As long as the both laptops take the same kind of hard drive, then yes :) Usually standard laptops all take the same size so you should be fine.

Hi Pc Monkey. Thank you for you're straight to the point video. Really helped ne out as am new to laptop upgrades. My question is. Is there a big difference between SATA III and just SATA, as on amazon SATA III seams to be more expensive than the SAMSUNG SATA SSD. Thank you in advance.
There is a bit difference on speed. However, they are both compatible with each other so you should be all set. However, the added expense is a waste if your computer only has a SATA I port as much of the extra speed will be lost on the older port.

would like to upgrade my machine in late 2020. As this video is quite old by now, I'm wondering: does it make sense for me to upgrade and is it doable? Model is Acer A315-51-331E and has Core i3 inside. My intuition is that by replacing Ram (currently 4GB) with the most I can and replacing HDD (1TB) with SSD 500 gb at least would improve the laptop speed considerably. In case I go with it, what should I know before proceeding? Have little tech knolwedge and would like to basically transfer all content to the new SSD. Thanks for any answer!!
When I look for a ssd card I see a SATA III will that work or must be a normal SATA ?
thanks! i'm pretty good with computers but i just wanted to check if i'd have to take off all the back or if its just an easy access door to it. i bought this laptop for my mom a while ago and the hardware is extremely good still now but the hard drive has like 400ms response times and it takes like 10 mins to boot to windows so it really needs an ssd to make it work well
If you have a model where you can access the HDD then yes, you would not have to take off the entire bottom case :)

As i observed from your previous video, i noticed that this laptop has a m.2 SSD slot just beside the RAM slot and need to open the whole back panel to install that. Can you figure out this?

If your computer allows both and has slots for both then yes, you can use both. If not, then you can always use an external set up and still use both :)
Hi, great video, Im having massive problems with this laptop. It crashed during a system restore and now it sooooo slooww. I've tried reinstall windows but doesnt but get past 0%. Its always had high disk usage with very little apps open, so i guess its the hard drive. I cant recover the keys for windows through cmd. Is this a problem? I came with windows 10, is it stored in the BIOS or UEFI?

Do you recommend a specific caddy for holding an SSD in the HDD bay and a SATA III connector cable for connecting the SSD to the motherboard? I have an acer Aspire 3 A315-51 which only came with a very small internal SSD, no HDD and neither caddy, nor SATA III connector :S I do now have a larger 2.5” SSD that I would like to install in the HDD bay.

I got a slight problem, the laptop im trying to add the harddrive to came without 2,5" drive nore a caddy neither the connection cable.
I do have bought the cable and a 1tb samsung 2,5" ssd (yes with a sata connector) but forgot to check if there was a caddy delivered with the laptop, sadly there was none.
My question now is: as the ssd is quite light and should be quite rugged, would it be ok if i (you're gonna be wanting to slap me in the face for that question) put it in with some doubble sided tape and maybe some additional foam pieces ?
Im pretty sure if i gently squeeze it in with the foam pieces that it should be protected enough but i wanted to ask for a second opinnion on it. Thy if you answer

No sorry. If the model comes with other CPU options, then there is a good chance you can upgrade it to those options. You can also check out crucial.com for upgrade ideas :)

i have a same brand and model. seams like it is a model version like mine coming whit the m2 ssd under the hod and they cheeped out on the hdd caddy and cables the place you are doing. i find a video whit the guy sasme problemas mine and got the parts for the ssd cable and caddy. many thx for you help

Interesting... great video, but I have an Aspire 3 here that has no bracket to insert any RAM stick in. The model number is A315-31 series (N17Q2). To be honest, this is the first time I have run across a laptop with no apparent way to upgrade the RAM. Am I missing something? Thanks for the great video.

The RAM is integrated into the motherboard. It cannot be easily removed / upgraded. Common with many laptops unfortunately :(

Is it possible to have a seagate hard drive in a new Acer Laptop. I sent mine for repairs and it came back with a seagate hard disk. I bought it brand new. So I’m thinking my hard disk was swapped.
The fact that i had this exat laptop and keept wondering why it's slowly as hell and now seeing that mine never had a Hard drive in the first place explains a lot

@@foxtrondemonprotector4051 Ah so you did have an SSD in it. I've not heard of a "weak SSD" but I suppose there are low-quality SSDs out there like anything else. That explains things . In that case yes, switching to a good SSD and upgrading RAM can greatly increase the speed of a system. Unfortunately on this system the i5 is a 1.0ghz CPU (slow) so it's going to run lots slower than say, a 3.5ghz. Still, it does the job if one isn't putting a lot of strain on it. I've had one sitting chugging away 24/7 on some processing for quite some time now. Have been trying to decide whether to upgrade it or replace it with a newer model. All I need is a business model (no special graphics). So almost time to make that decision. :D

Ive got the Acer Aspire A315-51 and I recently bough 8gb of ram of crucial and what a difference it makes to this fairly slow laptop. Running tasks is now quick and snappy. Next thing is getting a ssd!!

Its always safe to remove the battery before doing any repair work, but no, you dont have to unless its physically in the way.

Look up a 'Hard Drive Connector' for that model on Ebay or Amazon and you should find the part.

Hi iv just bought one of these and was going to put a hard drive in it that im unable to read via usb doc or anything, would it cause any damage to the laptop trying to start it with that hard drive?
Hope I understand correctly. No, it will not damage a computer to start it with an external HDD plugged into a USB port.

If you have files or other data you dont want to loose then yes, back it up. However, if you dont have any data that you want to protect, then dont worry about it :)

460GB SSD is a good size for most normal uses :)

The SSD itself will be much faster. The size is up to you. I generally to go about 1TB for most users.

It depends on the exact model Aspire 3 you have. They are all different. HDD upgrade options are usually to a SSD. The size is up to you. The RAM would depend on what your computer can take. You can find that info in your user manual or by using websites like cruical.com to scan your computer and tell you what your max RAM is

@@uwkcal If I am going to be using a computer for myself, I usually always upgrade the HDD to a SSD. Faster and break less often. I also, max the RAM on it as its a pretty cheap upgrade for what extra speed it gets you:)

Hi. My acer stopped charging and I noticed it doesn't have a hard drive. It's empty, is that how it originally comes?

@@PC_Monkey it's Aspire 3 A314-21 series. Model N17Q4. It won't charge. The charge light won't even come on. So I can't get the laptop on anymore. Think we've had it at least 1.5 years
I went to remove my hdd from my Acer Aspire 3 and discovered one of the screws that's holding it in the little case, is literally amd the screw is a tad bit worn out... I don't know what to do now. Is there a cable or something that I can get to connect it to my new laptop so I can retrieve my files? I'm at a loss and super upset as I don't want to lose any of my family photos and stuff too. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
If the screw is stripped then you would need to drill it out.
Yes, you can hook up a HDD to another working computer via an external hard drive hookup. If the HDD port is accessible, you may be able to hook it up to that without removing the HDD all the way
