  • I wanted to take some time to talk about how and why I chose music therapy as a career path. Hopefully this will help others who are interested in this field decide if music therapy is right for them. I'll talk about how my own relationship with music developed and how that impacted my decision to pursue music therapy. Being in this field has allowed me to work with amazing people of all ages and abilities, and they've taught me so much about myself in the process.

Thanks! I’m a former lessons teacher, songwriter, and recovering addict. I’m looking forward to exploring this field and possibly becoming a therapist myself! When I spent ten days in the behavioral health facility for drug related psychosis, music was the bridge between staff and patients. We had a great time picking songs from one of the nurses’ playlists and dedicating them to ourselves. It reminds me of that great movie Awakenings! Thanks again!

I'm in my final year of music performance through classical voice and I'm having exactly the same experience. I used to want to perform and be an opera singer but now, I just don't. The main reason I do sing and perform is because I can see what emotions my performance evokes in other people. I'm not at all religious but most of my work comes from singing in churches with weddings and funerals because I see how important music is in other people's place of worship. I've recently started thinking about doing a Master's in music therapy, and I can't get it out of my head. This video made me feel validated in my thought process. Thank you xxx

ditto, watching this video made me feel so validated. I was neck deep in the stereotypical music culture of perfectionism and overwork, lack of sleep with touring, etc, and my peers all loved it and loved for the cheers from the crowd. I just don’t care, but always felt like it was my best option. I’m legit considering going back to school wish me luck lol, cuz using music in a meaningful and healing way just clicks with me so much more than performing music just for people’s entertainment

I love it! I just discovered music therapy a few months back and I want to get in to the field.
I originally went to school for music ed but tendonitis injuries to my wrists prevented me form completing my proficiencies and so I had to switch to general music. That was such a huge blow for me and I felt completely lost since then, haven't really played music since. That was five years ago.
Since then I moved overseas and became a stay at home mom but I always felt like something was missing. Started seeing a therapist for some direction in life and she just casually mentioned music therapy and it was like a light bulb moment. I knew that's what i wanted to do and I could make a huge impact as there are no music therapists where I live. I could probably be helpful with special needs children in particular.
Everything I've heard about and watched convinces me more and more that this could really be the path I take to help others using my passion for music. I hated performing in undergrad but I'm right now planning for a public performance at a store that has an open space for musicians. I just feel like the barriers are so much easier to overcome. Of course passage of time helps, but so does working toward something that fires you up.
Thanks for sharing your story. It's beautiful to hear about your connection with your clients and how it's empowering them to overcome their own difficulties in life. I wish you the best of luck in starting your own practice and I look forward to seeing more of your videos.❤

I appreciate a lot your efforts to spread your experience about being a music therapist ♥ I've just found your channel, watched quite some videos and immediately subscribed. I've been thinking about studying music therapy as my Master's even though I have Bachelor in Communication, Social Science. Without even realizing it, I chose my thesis to be about how heavy metal can be used in our society, and unbelievable findings came through through various kinds of research on how much benefits it can have to people who like this kind of music. If I study music therapy in the future, I'm definitely continuing to research this topic in broader way. And again, thank you for inspiring and giving a lot of insights in what it means to be a music therapist. I hope it works out well for me, other people that seek this path, and you - to continue being passionate about it. ♥ Take care!

I think it sounds perfect for me because I love music, I play flute, piccolo, and saxophone, but I wasn’t sure how I could incorporate that into my job asides from a band teacher. I don’t comment often but your channel is legit a hidden gem. Im a veteran with some mental health issues, and was receiving treatment at the VA in Palo Alto up until a moved recently. While there, I wasn’t having much success with their standard treatment until I started the art therapy. It helped me a lot, but I was hoping there may be something else out there that can use in addition to the art therapy. Music therapy is definitely something I’m going to look into as soon as it’s safe. Growing up in the Bay Area myself, music was a constant part of the culture, and something that really just connects us all on so many levels. It’s what inspired my channel when I was in high school haha. Anyway, I’m glad a found your channel and think you are genuinely amazing. Looking forward to your future content!

Hi, Rubato! I'm currently a junior in college, having studied music therapy for about 3 years now. I've been wanting to become a music therapist, but I feel like that I sometimes dabble in doing music therapy "things," rather than fully understanding and applying what I'm learning in these classes as a professional music therapist. I recently shifted from music therapy into wanting to do therapy alongside being a music therapy educator, so with these new goals comes new efforts! I found your channel from Reddit and the Music Therapy Leaders Facebook page, and I hope to learn a lot from it!

Hi! Thank you for this amazing video! I was wondering if you know anyone who was not previously in the music field in college who became interested in music therapy and how they made their way into the field? I used to play the viola from elementary to high school and I loved performing in shows but I was never any good and I was always nervous about what other people thought about me. I went through college and even through graduate school and I earned a masters in medical biology because I wanted to be in the health field in some way but ever since the shutdown and seeing how much music actually helped those with depression (including my own family), I suddenly had an idea to pursue music therapy. Any thoughts or suggestions?

So by now I was teaching, playing with bands, doing, but I'm thinking very seriously to get my keyboards, guitars, knowledge and passion all together and start doing it. Hi I have a question- how is the demand for music therapy in the healthcare world? I’m very interested but I’m worried that there isn’t many job opportunities especially right now.. how easy (or hard) is it to get a job out of school?
Is this something one NEEDS a music degree in?

I’m in my foundation year of medical school rn, and i reaaaallly love music. Do you know anything about the possibility of going into music therapy after medical school?

Definitely a possibility but I think it would be kind of a waste of your medical degree 😬

Hi! I’m a Junior in high school and I’m thinking about going into music therapy. I have a few questions. Are there many job opportunities for it after college? I’m afraid I’ll have the degree but then I wouldn’t be able to find a job with it. Also, is it hard to find a college that offers music therapy? What do I need to major (and minor) in to become a music therapist. Can I become a music therapist with only a Bachelors degree?

I actually made a video about job prospects in music therapy, you can view it here: ua-cam.com/video/uXi_tvGHtKA/v-deo.html
There are more and more colleges offering music therapy degrees. You can get a Bachelor's degree in music therapy, or you can go in a more roundabout way as I did and major in something else (psychology or music related) and go on to do your Master's of music therapy equivalency program.

That’s a great question. There’s talk about possibly making music therapy a Masters level profession, but right now I would personally go for a masters in social work or counseling rather than music therapy, unless you have a specific modality in mind (e.g. Nordoff Robbins, AMT, NMT, etc)

Hi. I am currently an undergraduate who will be entering into college in fall 2023. I am interested in the field of music therapy. I was wondering, which should I major in, music or psychology? I know that these two do not define being a professional music therapist because even if I studied these both, I have to take a equivalency program. But I wanted to inquire which should be a major and which should be a minor? And did you have to take an equivalency program? Thanks.

    • @CreativeVibesMT
      @CreativeVibesMT  2 роки тому +1

Hi Rachel! That’s really up to you and your needs. If you feel confident with your music skills, then do it as a minor. If you feel you could use more training, then do it as a major. I did a dual degree in psychology and music and did an equivalency program for my masters.
