WE MADE IT TO YOKOSUKA!! Sorry to leave anyone hanging for house tours. In today's video, I thought it would be really beneficial to explain how to find a rental place in Japan as a foreigner. There are cultural nuances that differentiate the process from my previous experiences in the states. Other topics I hope prepare you are renting with a dog or a cat (pet-friendly rentals), discuss foreigner discrimination in the housing market, and… of course, share some hope! We are so excited to move to this area, and I hope you enjoy touring 2 out of the 5 houses we looked at. Stay tuned for the next video where we look a the rest of the 3 homes!

can't wait for a new series of "things in my Japanese home that just makes sense" on tiktok, I started following because of that and since then your videos have not disappointed, excited for new home and neighbourhood adventures 🥰
I grew up in Yokosuka since my dad was stationed there! I'm excited to see it all again through your videos!
Oh that's so cool!!!!! We love the area so much already. I spend a lot of my time in Yokohama!
I don't know in Japan but the outdoor shutters here in Europe are also used to keep the sun out in the summer and does wonders with keeping the house cool!
Same here, quite handy also for blocking the 4:30 am sun!
I love that area! Yokohama is the best. I spent 89% of my spare time there. There’s always something to do.
I'm moving to Yokosuka in the next 4-6 weeks. This was really helpful. I'm looking forward to watching the next tours you post. I will need to find a house as well.
This could not have come at a better time! I have been accepted for work in Japan, and I have been doing lots of research since last week, trying to look for a house in Sapporo. This is a good starting point. Now I have to look for any of your videos that have how-to bring your dog to Japan. Arigatou gozaimasu!
Japan has extremely strict quarantine measures, especially if coming from a country that isn't rabies-free (as Japan is). It's definitely something to be organising/looking into immediately! Most say to start the process 6 months before moving.
If you plan on bringing your pet and don't want them quarantined for long, (basically less headache & money) then you should've started the process months ago.
We brought 2 cats and a dog.
Yaaaayy I’ve been waiting for you to upload this video!!
yes I LOVE house tours! so excited for you
#1 being at the ocean walking Gus Gus and the baby on that boardwalk.
so peaceful!!!
So true! 3:00 it is definitely true. When I moved to Fukuoka I shortlisted 3 properties near the subway say about a 2 min walk from the subway. Before moving we were told those properties were no longer available because we did not speak Japanese.
Thanks for sharing!
Loved the video! It‘s so interesting to see the Japanese way of living. I‘m more than excited for the next video ❤😊
So hooked on this series !!! 😍 can’t wait for the next one. When do you release the next one?
the first townhouse is awesome , the view and the inside is really pretty ! and it look peacefull ! but it sad for the parking lot its a lot of money to put for another parking
YES! The parking is wild. It is located on a really peaceful street, and the realtor said that on a clear day you can see Mt. Fuji!!
Agreed ! So hard to beat that view! Gorgeous.
The views from the first one were amazing but the second one overall i liked much more! The space, the homey-feel, the japanese garden!!, tatami room etc so cool
Aaaaah that sea view was so nice 🥺
I know it’s only been 2 weeks 😂 But I am jumpin over this next video! I’m excited to see the other options & which one y’all picked! I know y’all are still probably unpacking and trying to get things together AND film/edit AND settle the baby & GusGus! Gosh, just thinking about it all makes ME tired and it’s not me LOL SOOO EXCITED for the next video ✨💖✨🙏🏻🌸 YEEE!
This video gave me major house hunter vibes and I am here for it😂
Thanks for the video series. We PCS to Yokosuka at beginning of the month. We’d be very happy with either of those houses. Thank you
Hey!! I hope you find this super helpful… welcome to Japan!!!
i would choose both these houses for my family (husband & 2 small dogs!) absolutely loved the vibes 😁
Looking forward to the next episode! So far second home has more potential to me, even that some appliances or cupboards may look outdated (you say the price is way lower, that's attractive!). It has nice layout, not that much of a long corridor, interesting what would be another options :)
Renting as a foreigner is always difficult, I moved from Poland to Germany and this is totally different experience (a lot of bureaucracy, most of the flats are with no furniture, good that there are at least bathrooms and wooden/titled floors :D) That was a cultural shock to me. In the end we found a really nice flat which I hope we will stay at for longer before moving to something we will buy in the future :) Good luck Atlas family! :)
Renting in Japan is really challenging! It takes time. And be ready to pay much more than you expected)))
I laighed at the "very small" bedroom in the first house. It must be either the camera not showing it how it was or a cultural difference, because it looked perfectly normal-sized to me, haha. I'm lookign forward for more house tours!
Also, an Instagrammer from my country has been recently house-hunting in Australia, and I loved that content. Seeing how yours video made me excited I might have found a new favorite genre 😂
My husband looked over my shoulder and said, "Are you watching House Hunters"? I told him it was even better it was Her Atlas House Hunters lol
The basketball team I was on at the international school I went to in Tokyo used to play against Yokosuka so I have been there quite a few times.
How has it been over 4 years😭😭 followed you since you moved to japan in the beginning and i'm also somewhere else entirely, it's crazy!
So cool! We live on Yokota AB, only about an hour and a half from there! We should meet up and get coffee sometime! ♥️
The views were amazing on that first house, but I think the one parking spot and the shared walls would be a big con. That second one with the Japanese garden and tatami room I thought was a great family home. Half the budget too?! Can easily upgrade the window treatments and make it more modern.
When are you gonna show the rest of it I can’t wait to see which house you chose
Miura might be perfect for you guys 🙌
In Canada, we don't have the monthly rent beforehand to pay, but the rent for what you showed for a house, is actually the price of a small appartement. So it's not perfect anywhere I guess!
If the second house won’t turn you into a hoarder I don’t know what will! 😂 But in all seriousness, I wish I had all that storage space in my studio apartment.
I get the Sakuraco box and I loved it.. then I dropped the adorable plate and it broke :(
Can't wait to see more!
Your silent screaming from the tatami 🤣
My house meets all your requirements! Too bad it’s in the countryside.
Hi from Australia. I have never rented here but in your vlog and one or 2 others I have watched about house hunting in Japan there is never a mention of references from other estate agents. From my perspective wouldn't positive past references greatly reduce fears of accepting foreigners as tenants ? Here I think the estate agents have a online bad tenants register. Given the over the top upfront costs I would ask why the renter is forced to purchase insurance, something I have not heard of before. I have not lived in Japan but if the landlord tried that in Australia there would be so many complaints I don't think it would see the light of day.
Hey Richard! great convo points!! In the states, it's the same. You can ABSOLUTELY have your previous landlord as a reference for your new home, and it's always really beneficial to do so. In Japan, you can have a reference from your landlord, usually you can provide a telephone number if you want it to make you more competitive. the challenge is that as a foreigner living in Japan, and if it's your first place, a reference from a previous landlord is absolutely worthless. The reference won't hold any value since it could be a fake reference. This is another reason it can be a problem for foreigners trying to rent here. Another option you can have is a co-signer, but they have to be a resident or visa holder of some kind in Japan. This co-signer is responsible for anything you (a foreigner) may skip out on. The crazy thing to me about the co-sign is expecting someone new to the country to know anyone who would be willing to sponsor them and sign legally binding paperwork!!??
Did you end up getting this house with the ocean views?
In the US that’s what we paid when moving into our rental
Does your husband's job help towards rent or rental moving? The first house has a million dollar view 😍
Cant wait you living there make up evry rooms
This rent is considered super expensive in India. Your conversion for India is 116000 and the price here in India is on an average 40000 per month for a 3LDK
I just double-checked I did the conversion right for the rupee, and I did!!! So that’s WILD! Is that an average rent (40000 JPY) for a city area too?
@@heratlas yeah like for cities 1 level lesser than the metropolitan cities have an average of 70000JPY monthly rent
You can’t compare India to Japan, lol.
i think the key money is crazy exp tho! $9k aussie before you even move in ;O
Will any of those deposits or fees made upfront be returned at the end of your lease?
“Check out that view”. Lol, that view will be a nightmare when an incoming tsunami comes.
I’m active duty and want to go reserves . I heard reserves have can have “deployments” to Yokosuka. Know anything about that?
sorry I have no idea about that!
The first townhouse made me feel claustrophobic
the bottom felt like a dungeon ahaha
Multitask you drive your bby chart with
Japan is a really good place for a two weeks trip. Full stop.
ahahahahah after year 1 the rose-colored glasses definitely become clear!
Or a lifetime. Give it a try.
did you bring your car from the us or bought in japan, i know sounds dumb but not impossible maybe
That old place more jappan than this one😊
🍀🍀🍀
What is the difference between a townhouse and a one family house? The townhouse has a upstairs and a garden, too? Im confused. 🤡
It shares walls with one or more other units?
@@rsmith02 Aah, thank you! Now I understand everything. 😇 Here in Germany its a "Einfamilienhaus" (one family house") and a house which is connected to one ore more houses is a "Doppelhaushälfte" (double house half) or a "Reihenhaus" (House in a row). 😆
Foreigners, also may "struggle" with the trash schedule, which is why they may hesitate to rent to us. I dont care, I still love Japan. 😂
I have never heard of this as a legitimate reason but I mean…. ALL FACTS ahah
I can't imagine if landlords discriminated against foreigners in the US. They would be sued immediately.
Yep! There’s a lot of it here in Japan, and you don’t really see or experience it until you’ve been here awhile. Rose colored glasses when you’re new!
I know delusion is strong in white America but this is next level. You can’t really believe Vietnamese, Mexican, Pakistani, Kenyan, Egyptian, etc, etc people arrive in the USA and don’t face discrimination when trying to find a place to live. My family couch surfed for over a year. Sure my non English speaking parents should have just sued, so easy huh? It wasn’t even a case of pay more it was a case of we don’t want to rent to people like you at any price.
Different histories- Japan wasn't a slave society and didn't pass such anti-discrimination laws in response to centuries of oppression.
The camera moves too much, a bit uncomfortable to watch.
