I was born and raised in Atwater,CA, 15 minutes north of Merced. The area was pretty small town cool up until 2001. The homeless thing didnt really start until then. I loved it so much that I ran screaming to NorthWestern Montana 2 years ago.
Your on the wrong side of Merced. Good video but its like going into south central Los Angeles to do a story of Beverly Hills. You’re kinda in the hood. I liked the video because that was my old stomping ground. The homelessness issue wasn’t a thing when I left Merced. I left in 1976 now, the homeless is in your face. Thanks for the video.
As a student, i will say I love the community of Merced and many of the locals are wondeful people. I do however, stay away from the south side of Merced, and will rarely ever see the other side as I have been warned about the area. Overall i do feel safe living in merced as a student, but can also recognize my immense privilege in living in an area that has been developed for the amount of incoming students
Lol. Of course, everyone always shows the older part of Merced. It gets nicer when you go up North towards Yosemite. That's where I live, 5 min from the UC. Very nice subdivisions and lots of tranquility.
NORTH MERCED is the Nicest , around the MERCED MALL and near the Merced Community College , Not by the University , you were Not even close to the Best side of Merced :) OLIVE AVE. is my Favorite part :) ++++++++
I’d have to disagree about the mall, although that’s because I worked there for a year and in that time saw and dealt with things I’d have preferred not to.
Merced is the junk drawer of California. All the unclassified flotsam and jetsom washed up there. In a way, that's good - nothing to live up to - but nothing memorable either. Even the fact that it's the location of the most recent UC is lackluster.
I remember Merced; when my twin sister and I were in kindergarten Daddy worked in the appliance department at Montgomery Ward and he was transferred to Merced. I remember my parents didn't like it so about a year later Daddy got transferred to Yuba City and they liked it way better. Have a wonderful day Rosie 🌹💛
Lol I see these type vehicles all the time nowadays. Jesus saves then their cash app info, say no to drugs then their PayPal link below that. Just the new form of panhandling
Haha! Too funny. Why didn’t you go to the North side? Every town has its rough spots and you were definitely around those areas. I’ve been here living on the North side of Merced for over 20 years and never had a problem. In fact, live in a great quiet neighborhood and love it here.
So much has changed in 50 years.. I was stationed at Castle AFB in 74 and drove those streets pretty regularly... I remember a few things but not much... I wish you had made a detour and went through Castle AFB while you were there... I would like to visit again one day... Thx for sharing...
Literally walked the part of downtown that the city hasn't spent any time developing. It's really nice from the Merced MMA building all the way to the old theatre. No one walks the part you walked cause like most towns you can always find a slum.
@@adammccoy1Nothing it's so dead there's literally nothing going on in Merced it's a city for boring people with no life ,it's The dumpster of California
The Tioga used to be the Hotel Tioga. My mom, grandmother, and aunt all worked there in its heyday. It was like the Hilton back then. Carl Malden, and the rest of the cast from Bombers B52, (which was filmed at Castle Air base, in Atwater) all stayed there.
Sad to see Merced this way. I grew up there also lived in Planada and LeGrand in the 60s through 1976 when I joined the Army. I remember cruising 17th Street on the weekends with my friends or hanging out at Lake Yosemite. I've only read negative things about Merced over the years. Too bad. Does anyone remember The Club Joaquin on Motel Dr? I worked there in 74.
You just went downtown. That's not all of Merced. For over 50 years there was a military presence in the area. A lot of military families. When the air force base closed the local economy started to struggle. Believe it or not, there was more to do in Merced 30 years ago then there is now. The UC hadn't brought anything other than higher property prices. The students don't stay or contribute anything to the economy.
What you've shown is essentially Any Town USA. Go down the old highway to the old downtown, you're going to find a redeveloped area and shuttered businesses. People approached you near Franklin & Ashby? Didn't happen, not there. Having trouble changing lanes in light traffic? Perhaps grasp the concept of sharing the road, sometimes you can't change lanes right when you feel like it. Yes, the homeless are rampant. Partly because of resource$. It is very expensive to do the cleanups and store their belongings. And they have "rights". Merced also has a soft heart, so much so that crews come from the bay area to work the corners. Collecting for cancer, funerals or whatever. I live here. Walk, drive and shop anytime, anywhere mostly after dark. I'm in my 60's.
Lol well you sound all butthurt that most people feel merced is a dump. Just because you might find it a great place to live doesn't mean that it's not a dump. The price of real estate in your town says it all

Ha! Ha! Ha! You drove past the building I sold computers from in the 90s, nothing has changed. There ARE things to see in Meeced but you need a guide to find them. Did you make it to the Castle Air Museum? Atwater is smaller, but at least they have Castle!
