    DOOM 1993 is timeless, i've played that game more times than i can count and i can always go back and replay it, it just doesn't get boring Timeless game design at it's finest, it hasn't aged a bit so DOOM 1993 is my pick :)

      I was 12 at the time and when I knew quake, whenever it came, was gonna be heavy and my dad was like no the requirements are a 486 I’m like dad no it’s gonna run shit, so lesson learned, when quake 2 got announced we got a pentium 133 and a voodoo…1? I think at the time, eventually we got voodoo2 and that changed my life. I’m old and it’s hard to remember cause I was a little kid but either way man, good fucking times, no?

    16 years separated the Atari 2600 release and the arrival of Doom. It was incredible. I was working in computer retail when the shareware Doom version arrived and it was a phenomenon. Everything changed after that ( we had 6 years of doom clones lol ), and it fuelled what was the arms race to get Doom running on a console. It made PC Gaming more relevant than it had been

    There is no other game, other point in gaming history where I can remember where I was stranding, what I was doing, where I was , when first experiencing the game like I can Doom. Doom created the world's most popular genre that endured the longest. Anyone who played it back then wouldn't even dare to start comparing. There was nothing like it, everyone who saw it was blown away. It wasn't merely a game, it was an experience to remember decades later. If you didn't go through it back then, you can't replicate the experience today. And the people, they were dodging physically in front of the screen!

      Yes. But that’s nostalgia. We’re talking about is new doom better than original. Yes, no one can deny the new one is blatantly the better game. But people have nostalgia for firsts. It’s why the Beatles are still over hyped. Because that generation have rose tinted spectacles. Same with original doom.

    • @killall-games
      @killall-games 27 днів тому

      @@iio58 It's pretty easy to deny the new one being better. It has a lot of modern flourishes that detract from the core gameplay loop. It's also got a bloated story that, while funny how the Doom Slayer doesn't care, you still can't skip. It's also wildly unbalanced with its weapons and has a lot of redundant monster types. The OG Doom, while lacking in level design compared to what custom WADs have delivered, is so pure in its focus and execution that it's hard not to get sucked into it nowadays. It really does stand the test of time and is only let down by the limitations of its designers working in 1993.

      That's not about nostalgia. New Doom is one among hundreds of other better games. Old one was the best of its time. I left new one halfway and didn't miss it, way better games since or before it. Old one had no competition in its day, everyone tried to imitate. New one ended up a footnote.

    Doom 1993 is hands down the most influental game of all time. Nothing compares. However, Doom 2016's gameplay is also sooo memorable. The feeling you get when you're playing Doom 2016 on Ultra Nightmare Difficulty in the later levels and wreck the absolute shit out of the poor demons is just insane. The bullying you have to go through in the first six levels is so demoralizing, but if you make it past Kadingir Sanctum, you become unstoppable. It's just too good. Here again, nothing compares. Not even Doom Eternal, since it has a vastly more balanced and overall more forgiving difficulty curve.

    I think people really underestimate the cultural significance of Doom 2016. Not only did it revitalise the FPS genre with it's emphasis on speed and offense over defense, but the influence of the soundtrack by Mick Gordon can be easily seen in countless other game soundtracks ever since. Not only that but the current rock and metal music landscape would not look the same without Doom 2016's soundtrack, with some of the biggest metal bands in the world being influenced by Mick Gordon's unique blend of synth and metal, with him even now helping to produce for bands such as Bring Me The Horizon.

    I think Doom (1993) is overrated. Not at the time, mind you. But those levels... um, mazes, more like. I was there when it came out, and the graphics blew my mind. But I vividly remember how much hatred I felt for wandering aimlessly in the samey looking corridors and searching for a red key. It was a step up from Wolf 3D, sure. But I think the biggest next step was Duke Nukem 3D. The levels actually looked like real places! And the whole game has a more creative and inventive style to it. And BLOOD oh my, now that is even better!
    But, of course, I understand the significance of doom. I just don't understand why so many people wear those rose-tinted glasses regarding the level designs.

    DOOM(1993) didn't age well at all
    at least 2D games from back in the day aged quite well
    sure for its time it was amazing, but anyone enjoying it today is doing so purely for nostalgia and out of respect for what it did for the industry

    • @Roach22
      @Roach22 27 днів тому

      I would love to see them upgrade the original games (prior to Doom 3) using the modern ID Tech engine with the ability to scale the graphics from the look of the original 1993 version right up to a modern looking game, with the ability to toggle quality of life improvements like being able to aim up and down etc. That would modernise everything but the basic gameplay and level layout, and would test how the game would hold up today. So essentially a complete version of the hidden Doom 1993 levels you could find in Doom 2016.

    • @NIGHTWULF
      @NIGHTWULF 26 днів тому

      I don't think it's fair to say that. I play a lot of older games (not 2D) yes some of it might be nostalgia but it's not the only reason, I also play them because they're genuinely fun, a lot of games that come out these days I don't enjoy because they just don't make them how they used to. This includes Doom.

    • @Roach22
      @Roach22 26 днів тому +1

      @@NIGHTWULF Video games today have a monetization first approach with questionable pre-order practices, microtransactions etc. Older games were focussed purely on fun and were more focussed on sustaining that with a simpler design. Today, games are designed to keep you playing with cosmetics, microtransactions, slowing down progression to force you to grind so you are likely to spend more money. All with tactics derived from the gambling industry - with bright colors and punchy sounds when you achieve something. People have been aware of this for a while, even social media gets in with some similar tactics. Mobile games are the worse for all this, yet a lot of them are free and generally make more money than any PC or console game.
