What I love is your enthusiasm, the joy in collecting, your connections with vendors, gamers, and other collectors, and most of all your philosophizing about the nature of collecting and playing. Keep up the good work. I'm sure you'll still have plenty more to share after you get that manual

Hey Mort! The first piece of content I watched was a recording of you speaking for about 30 minutes regarding the psychology of a collector. You were sick. But you pushed your way through the talk. It was a very intriguing, thought provoking talk. That's what brought me to your channel.
Seeing you and your friends out looking for deals is fun to see in between your serious moments of talking about collecting. It's a neat format. Thanks for the videos.

The best thing about your channel and your content, is your overall positivity and high energy. Regardless of what you’re looking for or what you find, whether you see a friend or a vendor you’ve bought from in the past. You’re always so happy and your psychological explanation of retro game hunting and our feelings is always so informative. It always brings a smile to the face of myself and my wife whenever we watch a video, and of course hear that awesome intro song. Keep being awesome Mort!!

I absolutely love the format of these videos and how you break up the game hunting footage with other bits of information, or mini reviews, skits, etc. Keeps things fresh and lets your knowledge and personality shine through.
Also, I have to say as someone who really enjoys shmups, beat-em-ups (b’mups??) and platforming games, the Genesis is one of my favorite consoles to collect for. The games tend to be a little more scarce, which makes finding good ones in the wild all the more rewarding 😊

    • @MortsGarage

@ well mostly the SoR games lol, but there’s also the golden axe games, hyperstone heist, punisher (if you have very deep pockets 😬, luckily it’s on the new marvel vs capcom fighting collection YAY!) power rangers the movie is also surprisingly decent. There’s a few that are exclusive to the Genesis that are worth checking out.

Lots of points to comment on. One of my primary draws to your channel is your insights on why people are interested in video game collecting and what games to you appear timeless. As you and RNG gamer talked about, it's about introducing us to the topics so we can participate and not a sense of lecturing or of bragging that this could so easily devolve to.

All the while presenting in an almost filmic fashion. Also you're genuinely funny. It's all a good time.

Great choices on your timeless games picks. I always hated the N64 controller, and never had an N64 as a kid. But I did play on my friend's and we loved the Pokemon Stadium minigames so much. And we loved Starfox 64. PS1 was my first console and I just recently picked up a working one (mine stopped reading discs), so I gotta go back and play some of my favorite games again. Also got a working GameCube so I can play through Melee again.
I do find it hard to go back and play old games I've never played before, especially on a controller that is harder to get used to, but some games are just so great and intuitive that you can jump right into them and enjoy yourself. And though I've never loved sports games, I feel like I have vague memory of enjoying myself with Blades of Steel - probably at my grandparents' house because I never had an NES.

As a long time collector I have noticed that storage plays a massive part in how long disc will last.
Most CD's and DVD's are silver lacquer based. The cold condition in outdoor storage units causes mold to grown on the lacquer and the silver to tarnish.
There will be disc that last 100's or year but the majority will be junk.
It only has to last our lives, who cares about the future.

I started gaming in 1987. I started with the NES. I next got Sega, snes, ps1, ps2, xbox 360, xbox one s. For handhelds I have gameboy, gameboy advanced, nintendo ds, 3ds. I have mostly moved on from many older games. My nes, snes, ds, 3ds, and xbox one s still work. I also have an atari with games purchased outside of its native generation. I almost never play it. For me nostalgia only gets me to go back and play a game on rare occasions. A short list of games are ones I still complete when I play them on the rare occasions I play them. Tetris is the only game I still play with regularly for older systems.

2 things I would like to say: Blades of Steel is indeed awesome, and how you explained why people would prefer old horror movies on VHS is the same reason i prefer playing retro games on a CRT. Not just because that's what i grew up with in the 80's, but it helps you see the game how the developers intended since it's what they had to work with at the time. Using the bluriness of the screen to blend pixels and create dithering effects, for example, it just isn't the same in HD no matter how many fancy filters you out on the screen 😅

@MortsGarage i managed to aquire a 14" Toshiba that only had 114 hours of use according to the service menu, so I have one that should last me many years. I also have a 27" Trinitron I mainly use for lightgun games, which is also something I find a HD display just can't match. I have 3 8" Trinitrons as well that all have composite inputs, but i mostly have those for the future if my other TV's stop functioning. By then I'm sure they will be impossible to find for a good price, but luckily my area is still lousy with with free CRT's nobody wants in their houses 😆

One thing I'd love to see is more reviews of games in your collection. I feel that a lot of retro collecting channels used to showcase their enjoyment of their collection a lot more and a lot of channels have gotten away from that. A lot of channels have become more about whats the next new crazy thing they can find for the collection or crossing off the next grail on the list rather than enjoying the amazing collection they already have. Getting new stuff is cool, but I always love seeing what's in youtuber's collections, and see them be played, and hear their opinion on an obscure game they randomly pulled off the shelf. It may be daunting, but once the N64 collection is completed, I'd love to see you go through it and review every game, creating your own N64 database.

Going back to older consoles, like NES or SNES, for sports is really fun even for a non-sports fan like myself. The games have to be distilled to its core, be digestable (ie, short), and easy to understand. So they all end up being more "arcade" vs "simulation" like it is today. I can't wait to play Blades of Steel with my pals as a non hockey fan as I am, I had fun with Hockey (NES) and this looks like a nice upgrade from that one.

For the NES I would say the the original Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros 3, Mega Man 2, Metroid and Dr Mario would be my top 5. For SNES there's a ton of timeless classics. Super Mario World, DKC 1 and 2, Final Fantasy 4, 5 and 6, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Zelda a Link to the Past, Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid, Fire Emblem Mystery of the Emblem and Geneology of the Holy War, Tetris Attack/Panel De Pon, Yoshi's Island, Star Fox, and so many more, the list goes on!

Definitely feel like the Wii has some timeless experiences on it. As my nostalgia console, having all those games I played as a kid sure feels like I have done child me a service. Plus a lot of the games, like Wii Sports, Mario Kart, Mario Party 8 and Wario Ware Smooth Moves are all great casual multiplayer games that definitely kept a party night going when I have friends over, even in college and beyond.

I love the NES, SNES and Sega Genesis. I basically love/have nostalgia for pretty much all systems from NES to PS2. Even if I didn't own it like a Turbo Graphics 16 or Neo Geo. That was what I grew up on. Also Sierra Computer games like King's Quest hold a ton of nostalgia for me as i grew up playing those games in the 80s and 90s. I'd add Mike Tyson's Punch Out to the list of timeless games. My favorite game of all time and still as much fun to play today as it was the day it was released.

I'm born in 1998. I'm either a Millennial or Gen Z. I don't know which one. Lol. Anyway, I'm still kind of young. I enjoy collecting physical games more than just buying them digitally if the opportunity presents itself. However, if a game goes for $100 physically and $8 digitally, I'm going digital. I'm also the kind of person who open things up and experiences the things out of the box at least once. I am a Nintendo fan, so of course I'm interested in all of the Nintendo systems, but I'm not so much into Sega. I'm starting to get into Play Station, but Nintendo is still what I play the most. So, for younger people like me, I think it depends. I think if they grew up playing Nintendo games, I think Nintendo fans, new and old, would go back and play the classics at least once in some form or fashion.

Great bringing up Power Quest for the Gameboy. Its kind of an RPG as well as fighter. Since its about kids battling with action figure robots and you need to collect parts. Its an obscure title for sure.
Only other thing like it on game boy is Metal Masters.
As a Sega genesis collector there is such a great variety, to the point the games I appreciate the most as an Adult are not always the same ones I played as kid. I chalk that up to the games being made for an older audience to begin with, and I was not old enough to fully appreciate the design.
I hope sega releases more collections Because they only recently acquired the the Technosoft games which are some of the highest quality non Sega published titles. Herzog Zwei, Thunderforce 3, Lightening force, Elemental Master, and Dragon's Fury. Your missing out if you have not tried these.

It is just like how most sports games these days have far better graphics, game play and etc.. but give me good ole RBI Baseball or Tecmo Bowl back in the day, far more enjoyment from it then than I do on any of them these days. I think Atari and NES are very primitive gaming in the same way silent movies are very primitive movies. But people still go back and watch movies like wizard of oz or early Disney animation because they have a timeless quality too them.
