If the eraser crumbs brought back luster does that imply that there was some kind of residue from the wet cleaning on the surface of the book that the crumbs cleaned off? Thank you for conserving a well loved book.

No, not at all. It is more likely the wet clean had removed oils that bind the dirt and the erasers were able to lift that grime.

@@ShelbysComics I have a float to the top theory related to wet cleaning, too. But I see most on the web do their dry cleaning first, then the wet clean.
