I love the use of the plastic arch to maintain the spine during the humidifying. I use a pipe insulation foam tube, but I think I like the idea you showed better. I think most covers would benefit from a little blue light therapy before the final pressing. If you maintain the ambient humidity in the box with the comic with a piece of wet sponge you get very little, if any, dry waves in the paper. You did a fantastic job.
#580 🖖👍
Dell, Gold Key & Whitmann are the best books.
Always dig the music choices for your videos.
Glad you like them! They are hard to find where I do not get copyright strikes LOL
😎 Shelby I LOVE Dell & Gold Key books , loved seeing that you loved them too. Enjoyed what was in the box so I watched a couple more times. 🤓 Jack's tail had a cool , casual wag that sums up what Dell & GK are a!l about - cool and casual reads.
It is the Punisher from the Bernie Wrightson 4 issue mini series, I think he was fighting demons in the series
This may be the first one where the clear out/sell pile was equal to the keep pile. How often does that happen with us collectors? : )
Not very often LOL
Looks so much better after that dry clean.
Wait till you see the Marvel Family next week LOL
Sometimes, the tears can interfere with the dry cleaning and it’s a good idea to wait, thanks for mentioning that. The document eraser shavings are great also for ingrained dirt. The book looks so much better. The buffing at the end is so beautiful luster indeed! Great job, Jack and Shelby!
Thanks again for your support my friend
Thanks for sharing your steaming process Shelby! Was there any reason you decided against an aqueous bath? Just a risk assessment against color fading or something?
Yes, that was part of it - concern over the light blue ink, but also, it really did not need a full bath. The book was not that dirty, nor much tanning.
@@ShelbysComics That makes sense. I was wondering about the conservation aspect as much as the cleaning aspect, but I suppose if the paper doesn't seem particularly beat up or brittle that goes into the risk assessment of a bath as well.
Pucker puss was Gould's last great character! I have the hard cover. Is Tracy still in the newspapers?
Dear Shelby, that Jack ❤️ he must love those patriotic covers also 🤣. PS: Got me a big mat finally from Amazon! I’m back to school now and really trying to find time to work on a book. I have the same steamer! And use a rod like you with the srp paper. Great idea on the cloth hanger though! Great job!
Love it!!
Hey Shelby. Hope all is well. Miss ya bro. Had to take a break for a little while and reattach my head.
Welcome back!
well done my freind 💯💯❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥
Thanks!!!
Hi Shelby, I grew up reading Disney, Superman and Batman in Arabic. We didn’t get most of these. Little Lulu title later and I did enjoy reading these. I didn’t know about Barbalella comics, very cool. I would list these as separate lot on eBay! Nice lot and conditions.
That is awesome! I have listed all the "for sale" already on ebay!!!
I’m sorry to see this happening. You followed the procedure. It does present well though and overall it wasn’t a total disaster. Hi to Jack!
It was a good test. We now know what NOT to do LOL
Hello Shelby. You violated the first rule, do not use a new method on a book you care about UNTIL you have practiced it enough times on books you don't care about. Live and learn. I applaud your bravery. The cover of the book should be dry when you start. Build your press stack with the cover before misting the paper. Mist the copy paper away from the book. I think your copy paper was too wet. Damp, but not sloppy. It should still have a little stiffness as you lift and lay it across the book. I am sure your other mentors, better skilled than I, will give you better instructions. Thank you for showing us your minor failures as well as your successes.
We are good -- this book was rough and would not go into the PC. I would be looking for an upgrade in the future. I needed to use a mist sprayer for sure LOL. Thanks for watching and the comments !!!
Sorry for the misfortune Shelby. On the bright side it was a learning curve and I think the book felt the love 🫶
Maybe next time one like this gets a dry cleaning, misting and tear seal, and light treatment for the cover and inner pages. Maybe not a bath? Then a little humidity and a pressing. And back in the bag and board to be accessed in another five years. Or maybe you thought of this one as a practice book?
No, never thought as a practice book. I saw issues that I felt could resolved through conservation process. Not sure, if you are disagreeing lol.
@@ShelbysComics No, you just sounded like it was more than you expected. And since you did not show it, I am guessing you did not give a bath to the inside wraps.
I assume it's going to be read...
I'm to the point where I refuse to buy any amount of books unless I've read and sorted all of what I have so far. Also, Gyro Gearloose's first appearance was in Comics and Stories #140 I believe. That issue you have might be his first self tiled book though. That I am not sure.
Correct on the Gyro - thanks for the correction. Good rule on "refuse to buy" - I will be honest that I get the nostalgia itch bad with these Dell books and do not always read them *bad Shelby* LOL
I have the same issue. Too many boxes not sorted well. I usually find what I am looking for but not always in a reasonable amount of time. It is always amazing what books get grouped together. But then it is like going through a dollar bin - "Wow I forgot about that one. Happy to find it again."
Exactly!
Joe Kubert is the greatest in my view! Jack is off the chain!! LMAO
I love how Jack is biting on the plastic - he has such a good taste 😂 these are some nice extra books to go through. Love the Dr strange/Beatles cover. The Blue Beatles had its followers for a while. I had a few of the title. Probably still around. Congrats on this box collection, some nice picks!
😊 thank you - still a lot of boxes to go through and trimming down the collection.
Beautiful job. I love the gloss on the cover and the interior wraps are vibrant. That small piece missing is a shame or this book would be high grade for sure. Excellent work as always, Shelby.
Thank you! I am going to start leaf casting so I can fix those little areas. I will be reaching out to you for sure.
How come ya do not mix everything thing together for the wash??
OMG! That kid holding a gun!! 😲 that was the good ole days!! 😉
I think two hours in the blue light box with just light would bring out those whites, and may get rid of the hint of staining. Overall great job as always.
Awesome my brother I love it I remember it keep up the excellent work the G-Man always approves well done my man 👊👌
Thanks for the visit
Great looking book. I see Jack is helping out again. Excellent job being hosted by the Conservation dudes last night, btw; some excellent tips I could use.
Very cool, I have learned so much from you and appreciate your friendship.
my brother this was an awesome show my friend nice to see you made some really good impressions on some dy hard hobbies and good friendships and mentors as well . always learning and striving for the best ,well done Shelby I had a really good time last night watching this and learning also about you and the proses of some of these interesting and fun as well works I've dabeled a little . A lot to say but my friend keep up the excellent stuff hear had a really good time and I hope you make more indevors into this field .and thank you for caring and saving our history as well 👊💯 Love ya my dude Keep beging awesome my friend. The G Man Totally approves well done 🙏👊👊💯💯💯💯 and two your Mentors on the Big Thumbs 👍very nice indeed your friend G👊
Thank you for all the kind words my friend!!!
I agree with the Professor--extra added staple. I remember when we were younger this was the size of a kid's stapler. Looking forward to seeing the leaf casting in the near future!
I think the gel Evapo-Rust is more concentrated than the liquid. I suspect four hours was just too much at that concentration and bleached the paper.
Love these! Lots of potential. 👍🏽
I didn't realize how small those Immaculate Comics plexiglass pressing boards were when i bought one. That was on me of course for not really looking at what i was buying, but they're obviously intended for a folded book, not an unfolded wrap or cover. At any rate, great work at always. I always get a little nervous when you man handle those immersed wraps, but then i remember that you have them between holytex or remey or something.
I am going to talk to Rick about making some large acrylic boards, but you can find suitable sizes on Amazon. I only use Hollytex - I have some Remay, but it is much courser.
I do not know who you are on the Facebook group. Friend me and send me a message please and I can share the links.
@@ShelbysComics That would be great.
hey shelmeister,...sorry about the phone call, my batt died.......do a frigging video w your poa stuff! regards, unca jeff
I need to do that. Great talking to you, been a while.
Nicely done.
Thank you sir.
Nice results, but would you use the ComicQ on a GA again? How do you feel about this method?
I like the product. I would have to do more experimenting with the product. For example, I am very comfortable with using Immacuclean and know when to use and not use. Yes, I would use ComiQ again, but I need more practice. I would suggest other try the product and post results on the CBCC board :)
I like the results! Definitely improved it. Really a great job. Jack’s helping you with the buffing lol
That is the secret sauce, Jack buffing the book LOL
Beautiful conservation! And as you say, can't hardly find a better practice book.
Just do it! Tape removal and spot casting 100%!
Nice books! Love the Web of Mystery. The Target Comics issue is Vol 4 No 1--Vol 1 No 1 is a very famous and sought-after Basil Wolverton cover featuring the first cover appearance of his creation the SpaceHawk! Still at only 8 Universal copies in the CGC Census a very rare book indeed. Imagine Target Comics is so early that it's already in the 4th volume by 1943. I would keep that one Universal.
I am guessing the cotton rounds are the exfoliating style and they look like the ones I get from Kroger/Ralphs/Frys supermarkets. I love how you had to talk to yourself about being brave.
Got to talk yourself into it sometimes LOL
It looks like the cleaning is coming along nicely.
Overall I was very happy. This book has a lot of issues with staining.
That’s amazing results. Glad the solution worked on the DT. That color loss on the SA scared me.
I expected it with the SA DC. You look at them too long and they lose ink LOL
My guess is the book was shot with a be-be gun. You see this in many 1940s and 1950s comic books. We are lucky it was a single shot. Nice find, and great work so far.
I had not thought of that LOL - you will shoot your eye out!!!
@@ShelbysComics I do like the Red Ryder ads on the backs of many 1940s and 1950s comic books. : )
Really cool book. How long was each wash?
No more than 5 mins each.
Captain Marvel #18 is beautiful! Thanks for the history lesson on Dick Tracy and his origins. The book looks great to me - interior quality looks superb. The cover looks so much brighter and cleaner. Congrats on this cover project!
Clips worked really well! Great result and preserved for the next generation!
That seems to have worked pretty well. I was thinking maybe put the staples in first, then come back and run a brush with glue under the edges of the tipped-in pages to secure them down. Looking forward to seeing it all back together.
Looks great. Agree i think put the staples in first, then apply a bit of glue.
