      Nick Nurse is an all-time great Head Coach, even if he doesn't win NBA Coach of the Year (2020):
      Became the youngest college basketball Head Coach at just 23 years old; 2× BBL Champion (1996, 2000), 2× BBL Coach of the Year (2000, 2004), 4× BBL All-star Game Head Coach (1995, 1997, 1999, 2001); 2× NBA D-league Champion (2011, 2013), NBA D-league Coach of the Year (2011); NBA Champion (2019), NBA All-star Game Head Coach (2020)...

      We say defense wins Championship Ring, right ?
      Ben Simmons is Top 5 NBA point guards when it comes to perimeter defense.
      6'10 point guard should live in the paint against 6'2 point guards.

      Brad Stevens, Steve Kerr and Erik Spoelstra are definitely on the same level.
      The Raptors are able to defend and utilize such a style because they have 3 of top big-defenders (Gasol, Siakam and Ibaka). Plus Lowry is relentless on D as well. But what really puts them over the top is that they fully commit to their style and their assignments, rotating on switches and so on.
      Their team actually puts 100% effort on the defensive end, and their offense is secondary. The guys know their roles and fulfill them. Overall the Raptors are one of _the most_ all-around teams in the league.
      *Nurse is great coach, but you can't teach perseverance, hard work and the defensive prowess that these guys have. The guys on that team simply need a wise mind to guide and direct them. As great coaches do. If you put a different lineup of players in the same system, it likely won't be as effective. Formidable teams and formidable coaches go hand in hand.*

Nurse’s coaching definitely elevated his teams play, and the players want to play for him.

      @@Bluefire064 1.) No one said that he doesn't deserve COTY..
      2.) The 3 coaches that I listed could very likely coach the Raptors with great success
      3.) Despite the Raptors losing Kawhi. They still have one of the best defensive teams. Both individuallly and as a team. Combine that with a defensive-minded coach like Nurse and success is practically inevitable.
      4.) Nurse is a very good coach. However it takes a truly phenomenal coach to coach a team without a true superstar to a championship. So I hope that Nurse and the Raptors have what it takes to win without Kawhi.

    What's scary is there core is still young. They somehow transitioned from the Lowry/DeRozan era to the Siakim and Co. era while staying a top team in the conf. Siakim, Og, Powell and vanvleet will hold it down for years to come even if Lowry and Ibaka starts to regress.

    Let me start with how much I enjoyed your video. I hope kids sit and focus on how the basics work in team defense. I would like to see you do a series on great defense and how they were applied through time. So today's 3 happy league and what teams do today vs the pick and roll days and how the dynasty Spurs used their roll players like Malik Rose and Tiago Splitter in that system. Then how the 90s defensive teams defended in the iso era. That's a series I'd watch with my kids too.

    My 76ers were projected to be one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference but were 6th by the time the season was suspended. There's obviously been a lot of noise, but I feel like it'd be interesting to quiet the noise down and see from a game tape coaching perspective why the 76ers had struggled for most of the season.

    i like the jumping high stuff but it only works when close enough and there are definitely holes in the D as you pointed out and we may see teams beat the D now by using their weaknesses you pointed out if they see this. The only problem I have with high-jumping closeouts is it leaves too much room for good shooters to draw fouls and to get beat on a drive if you get them to bite on a pump fake. Not only that but it also opens up unneccesary opportunities for players to get injured on the landing all to maybe block a shot maybe not block a shot. I'd rather see tight D and better self awareness to not run into screens so you don't need to jump high to block because you'll already be so tight you'll just need to put a hand up. Like, you know when a player sets a screen and unless they move they can't stop you so it should be impossible to get beat on P&R, yet teams somehow do.

    I am so fascinated by the raptors defensive scheme, so high school and so basic, yet you will be surprised how fewer pro players actually doing it and doing it well. For an instant, hands out to close the driving gap, it is so basic and yet so effective however you will rarely see them in NBA. Thx Nick Nurse.

  • @ewencameron9382
    @ewencameron9382 4 роки тому

    Coach Daniel, you featured the Raptors & Celtics' perimeter shot challenging technique-- differing from a defensive "chop" closeout at about the 4 minute mark. Do you think this is an adaptation to the zeitgeist of abundant perimeter shooting at the highest levels or just a better technique overall for all levels of basketball? What I'm wondering is how the Raptors & Celtics recover from a perimeter pump fake that draws the on ball defender out of the play, allowing the ball carrier an open lane to drive to the hoop.
    Is this tactic good for all basketball levels? And how do the Raptors & Celtics recover?

    • @coachdaniel8163
      @coachdaniel8163  4 роки тому

      That's a good question. I personally think this style of closeouts can and should be done and at least experimented with at high school and college levels. Jumping is seen as bad, but it can really effect the shot. In terms of recovery, it just takes smart defenders to rotate and force the next pass. The Raptors are betting the tradeoff of a few open shots because of their style is worth it to contest and prevent some 3's.
