Nicely done. This helped me to do a basic walk in Spine. Than you. I must say as an animator I prefer Toon Boom Harmony for animating, but many game studios seem to be using this software. Its quite interesting, and I can see why they use it.
I know AE and I wanted to start learning flash and did but after a few tutorials and some light practice it seemed like it takes too long to do anything, at least for me. This one makes more sense, I think, or at least it looks easier. Thanks!
Here is the link where you can find the project and diagram files: esotericsoftware.com/forum/Run-animation-tutorial-2612 But I think you have to set it up yourself though.
No, bone binding shortcuts does not work as you describe. I am using Ctrl instead of Shift, but upon release (1.dragging to create a bone, 2.pressign ctrl to select an image 3.releasing ctrl 4. finishing drawing the bone) nothing gets assigned, just new bone appears, Very frustrating
I made a quick video to show you how to do it. dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/18870395/SpineHelperVid01.mp4 I'm in the process of creating an entirely new series of videos for all features in Spine that will follow the user guide on our site at esotericsoftware.com/spine-user-guide
Two points to make here that have been missed out, I'm learning the software a lot better now just by randomly messing around, in order for your shortcuts to work properly you must first select the root in the hierarchy ( the little crosshair below the skeleton ). Duplicating the keyframes does not always work depending on how your animation has been done, sometime it is actually better to do it manually and just animate they keyframes in reverse. I found this out through experimenting in Maya but because this is a bone system the same is true in Spine as well. This does mean you have to take note of the coordinates that your frames are being recorded at but in the end it makes for a much smoother animation that doesn't snap back or look weird. The reason being I had a much simpler character done up and because I had rotated my leg which was just a basic shape it decided to simply rotate in reverse when the keyframes were duplicated rather than go backwards. Hope this helps anyone struggling with the tutorial.
Nice!!! I have been looking for a program a.k.a Spine 2 bring my 2.5 Iillustration, Animated life! That maintains the vector illustration look, That I get from AffinityDesigner. But NOW ANIMATED!! KOOL
For the feet trespassing the ground problem, what about a function that let you manipulate the IK constraint point in a way that the feet (or hands etc) stays in a fixed position while the body moves? I don't know, that you can choose which end of the constraint to move?
Hi, i m just starting with Spine, it's great but i have a problem when You select all bones and click key rotate and key translate, they appear to be green on video, i have it all grayed out, and can't do that step. When i select diagram pose buttons are green and red, but my character have it gray
Soren, I need your help...Just got the software but can figure out how to have the images ready for Spine.... I have the character separated in levels in photoshop .I did all the steps but when I run the script to save each individual file it save it wrong....The arm level is now part of an head, the antenna is now part or a foot....everything was wrong... By the way, I have Spine Pro 2.0.23 Can someone help me?
Hello, do U know were I would be able to find LayersToPNG.jsx file? I was tryng to make my own jsx file with proper code from some website but it doesnt work
No matter what i do, it wont do the whole thing with creating new bone and attaching it to the right image. (At 3:13 in the video). its driving me nuts :/ what am i doing wrong?! im following the exact steps....:(
Hey! thanks! Yeah the way of it saying to use CTRL doesn't work either. I tried that :/ Im using the slower way, since it seems to be the only one that works...hm..maybe its something in my hot key settings, but i didn't change them, so that would be weird :/ thanks tho!!
Zoe Leandra yeah so just click the bone you want first (in this case root at the beginning) and then hold ctrl to select the picture. You can then let go and just click and drag the mouse if that makes sense?
hi, nice tuto brother. The hotkey "Control + 1 or +2 ..." doesn't work for me, so do you know any other hotkey that can do the selection stuff in spine version 1.7 ?
I have a question on a more complicated concept when animating for video games with Spine. How do you set up different animation states, as in attack 01 and attack 02, a running state and a walking state, and how you set it up so your animations transition smoothly between them? Say I ws standing idle (idle animation) and I start running forward (run animation), how do I make it so it transitions from idle to running smoothly?
Did you find out how? i think i will have that problem as well ( i havent started animating with spine yet but im gonna fall to that problem sooner or later)
The small thing like shift w click the bone drive me crazy ( I don’t know about those hot key would help sooo much) I almost give up on this program THANK U SO MUCH U SAFE ME
I'm using the professional edition. When I get to the part where the images cannot be found, and I locate the correct path to the images folder, the images show up as items in the hierarchy view to the right, but still do not display as anything but empty bounding boxes in the workspace. I thought this was some kind of display/hide setting issue, but it doesn't seem to be so. The completed versions of the included animation file do indeed display normally when opened. Can't figure out what the problem is when I go step by step.
The Spine forums are best to get help, but your problem is because of how Spine finds images. It looks for imagesPath + attachmentName + ".png". The attachmentName is something like "head", so you need to set the images path to the folder containing "head.png".
Nate Sweet Thanks, Nate. I posted here because I was following this tutorial when I had the problem. I figured it would be good to put the post here, in case anyone else has the same problem with this same tutorial. It sounds like you're saying that I need to make sure that the image path points to the folder that actually contains the images. I tried that every way I could imagine, and I still have invisible bounding boxes. The problem seems not to be the path linking, because Spine displays the images as a list in the Hierarchy view once the path has been set, just as one would expect.
R-800 You mean you have the red "missing" images? You can type "images" into the Images node path and press enter, or you can click browse and find the folder that way. Maybe you can post a screenshot of what is happening? We should continue this discussion on the Spine forum.
Hello, nice tutorial, I'm not sure Shift (to get the bones attached) works on MAC, I've tried pressing CMD instead of Shift, and it get's highlighted, but if I make as you do, (click, press cmd, leave cmd when highlighted, leave click) a new bone it's created without the image attached... :'c. Thx!
Søren Nielsen so does it mean that I have to use photoshop only in order to use spine? Because I am having Inkscape and all my sprites are done in inkscape. So is it not possible to import my Inkscape exported png files and make animation in spine?
vignesh sivakumar Using Inkscape is fine we just don't have a script for it. The script just exports a JSON file and PNG's so it's a bit faster to import into Spine.
Erixzone Reyes Sorry about that. The method for doing this has been changed. You now need to hold Ctrl instead of Shift to select the image you want to bind to. Hey there do you recommend Spine over Harmony for game creation? I noticed one of the featured in Harmony is that you can export the art in various sizes for different screen resolutions. Is that also possible with Spine? I ask because you are importing pixel art from Photoshop. Thank you!
If you press K all changes on the current frame will be keyed, is this what you're looking for ? We have a cheat sheet for keyboard shortcuts here esotericsoftware.com/spine-cheat-sheet
Søren Nielsen That's the problem. Only changes are keyed but I need to set all the default first mesh poses of the animation like the bones. If I make changes in another frame without that the animation is stepped instead of interpolated. Set this manually is a pain.
SoulGuitarMetal There isn't a way to key many meshes at once. This is a pretty heavy thing to do, maybe skinning (controlling the mesh vertices via bones) would be easier?
This tutorial is not up to date, the current version does not work like this. Also the documentation for rigging is next to non-existing. The documentation in general is lackluster and needs to be more fleshed out.

Hej Søren! How does Spine work with 2d pixel animations? Can you do a tutorial for pixel art in general? Im finding it very hard to get something decent from it! Thanks! :) Nicolai.
I really love how you explained all the actions. It’s very clear and on point! THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing ✊✨
Thats how all tutorials should look like, Good Job you are an excellent teacher!
quick, to the point and extremely helpful! Very rare these days, thank you!
I gotta try this out. You made it look actually doable.
Awesome, thanks!
Whenever I create a bone and drag it "shift" does nothing. Can you clarify on that? 2:58
UPD: alt doesn't work either :(
I don't have to worry about animation anymore, thanks !!
Thanks this is a great tutorial for the basics! I'm excited about this program!

so the shift thing has changed either that or the program is dumb
this looks so simple it might make me switch from ae! thanks dude
Such a great video tutorial, THANK YOU SO MUCH for your help :)
The shift thing doesn't work for me. I have to pick the bone I want as parent, then hold command and choose image, then draw the new bone...
That shift-key rig setup doesnt work in the latest Spine I guess, huh?
