I found this story back in elementary school, these books were my favorite. This story still stuck with me, i'm 25 now, so it stuck with me for awhile. :)
I'm so glad books like this existed when I grew up. It's important for the young mind to be exposed to a diversity of art and literature, including those that explore death and horror. Too many adults I run into were too sheltered as kids and it reflects in the way they they think, behave, and how non-resilient they are as individuals.
This would make a good movie, if you show their whole life. How they met, the times they spent together, how they fell in love until the day Jenny becomes sick...Just a pretty normal slice-of-life movie. And then as the big plot twist of the movie Alfred takes away her ribbon and you only see how the head falls off and lies on the ground and then the credits pop up...
"-and Jenny's head fell off." Alfred sat there for a long moment, silent and stunned before uttering one final statement. ..... ..... ... ... .. "THE FUCK?!!!"
I’ve always wondered what happened to Alfred, or how he reacted when Jenny’s head fell off. This story stuck to me the most along with the sweater story.
LOL this and those "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" and one about a Haunted House were my favorites as a kid. It's funny how I'll always remember these.
Still wonder to this day why they decided to give this book to children, like first graders, that’s a terrifying story, I’ve never forgotten it and it’s been 10 years
I read this so many times in 2nd grade, for reading time I would always hide the book in a corner and pick it and keep it to myself. If someone took the book, I would not read anything- or just get a random book and flip the pages. I love this story, and I feel scary stories are comforting
Guy: "Now that we married. You have to tell me about the green ribbon" Girl: "Is that's why you married me? Guy: "Hmmmmmm, nooooooooooooo,...." Girl: "&%$#*%*#$*T$*"
I wonder if he was still inquisitive and kept asking her about her ribbon when she was giving birth to their kids. Alfred: Honey, why didn't you take off that ribbon before you started having contractions? Doctor: Jenny, you're doing great! I can see the head. Alfred: Honey, are you sure that your ribbon isn't- Jenny: Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! *Baby cries* Doctor: It's a boy! Nurse: Alfred, would you like to hold your son? *Alfred can't stop looking at his panting wife.*
Alfred: Now that we are married, you have to tell me about the green ribbon. Jenny: Is that the reason why you married me? Alfred: Of course not sweetheart, it's because I'm concerned about you. Jenny: The green ribbon is a family heirloom with a curse. I'll tell you more when the time is right!
As a kid, this story confused me instead of scaring me.. I was like "so the scary part is that she was technically dead the whole time? If she was walking and talking and even grew old, she is essentially functioning like a living person, so it almost doesn't matter that she was dead". I couldn't understand why it was supposed to be scary since it's just a story about a normal girl's life except she happens to be "dead"
For reaal the same opinion about this Its been 5 yrs but still i think about it “was jenny dead??why her head fell off,if she was fully functioning then why & how she be dead???hear head suddenly fell & a ribbon keep it together the entire time??its funny & confusing
I doubt it. It wasn't even that scary back then and it isn't now. It's just a cool story. I read it in 3rd grade [lots of kids read it, it's been around since the 80s] and no "trauma" to speak of. Lol. It wasn't a "had to read" it was a "want to read" you found in the library.
xxxkitten2554xxx I dont know about you....I had 4 tv channels in 1988 when I was 5. They went off at midnight. This book freaked me out as a 5-6 year old. Not really a "cool" story.
Each child is different Lol To each their own. Some process it as the story it is, others get too far into their heads about it. Her head fell off. Okay.. next. Lol
I remember reading this in 2nd grade. I went to visit the nearby library and found this nook full of fairy tales. Out of all of them, this one has been stuck in my head forever. I'm 17 now. Oh house this brings back so many memories..
I had a book like this when I was younger. Maybe around ages 7-9 or younger. It was a scary stories book and this was one of the stories. I had read all the stories but this one was just really interesting. It was my favorite out of them all. There was something about it that I couldn’t explain that just had a very spooky but weirdly calming sensation to it. It still shows up in my mind once in a while…
This story is special to me, even though it never scared me as a kid. Rather, it made me sadder than anything else at the time had. Broke my little boy heart...
I remember being a little girl and our teacher had us all huddle up in a group. She read all the stories from the book and it was this one that I remember the most. Such memories, I'm glad I can look back to this and I hope teachers are still reading this book to their students.
OK, so I heard this story when I was six years old and never forgot it. Now that I'm a teacher, something reminded me of it, and since we're in our last days, I decided to orally tell them the story. (I was a little off with the details, i.e. he removed the "scarf" on their wedding night). They were all scared but laughing at the same time. I hope I didn't traumatize them. I think today's kids have seen more.....let's see if there were any nightmares over the weekend!!! lol
I would love to tell these stories to my students but I work in a church based private school where parents are so sensitive about any little thing that I'd be scared of receiving complaints the next day. It's an even bigger disappointment when Halloween rolls around and I'm not allowed to celebrate it.
The ending part was very accurate for “Jenny’s Head Fell *Off.* not to mention how creepy vibe it’s giving but it’s been in my head for a year now, and I think also when Jenny head fell off it’s giving *beheaded*
I remember renting this from the library in the 90s in elementary school. I listened to it one evening after school and the power went out i was soo scared!
I was a strange kid, I wasn't scared of this story, but I felt really sad after we read it. I actually cried when it was done, and the teacher was like "it's okay it's okay, it isn't real, you don't have to be scared", and I'm like "I'm crying because I'm sad, that poor lady, and now her husband will miss her". I would get more saddned by ghost stories and the like rather than scared, idk why, maybe I felt sad that the people died.
Don't worry. I wasn't scared about this story too. But I had goosebumps when he lost her, and when she died, even until now. As an adult, I have my theories about this story. One theory I have, is she's a dullahan. The other one is that I see the green ribbon as a metaphor of her hiding her pain (green being known as a color for hope and calmness) and she doesn't want him to know because she thinks that he will not love her anymore, so she waits until her death to reveal her true self to him.
Remember when schools let you take a cassette player and have a read along with a book I did with bernstein bears...but it would have scary to hear this on that... This is a read along too!

I remember reading this in 1st grade, and it was my favorite book, I tried to find it again, but then there were some books that got donated, so.....yeah
