I loved how those harmony guitars complimented Lynott's soulful lyricism. A beautiful balance. Huge respect for Brian Downey on drums...I mean, that monster groove on 'Bad Reputation' I think even Buddy Rich would have approved of. Bob Dylan told Huey Lewis that Phil was a genius. Check Phil's solo demo from 1984 called 'One Wish'. The song really captures the rueful sorrow of his sorry decline. A heartbreaker...but then that aching pathos was always there underpinning Thin Lizzy's storming visceral power...Loved this episode, guys. Continued success with your channel...
They're not my favourite band, but like any hard rock fan I know their material. "Nightlife", "Fighting", "Jailbreak", "Johnny The Fox", and "Bad Reputation" are as good a run of five albums as any band in history.
Great interview guys 👍Thin Lizzy such a underrated band, they are absolutely in my opinion the best band ever, not just because of the catchy rock tracks, the twin harmony guitars, the rock solid bass and percussion it's how it all blends and contrasts with Philips exceptional poetic lyrics and his exceptional phasing that sits just behind the tempo delivered in a streetwise rhyming storyteller rap, he could literally sing the menu of the taco bell and make it sound awesome. So many rock bands have sited Lizzy as a massive influence , and as for the guitarists Lizzy had and what each player added to the sound of each album. On a final note Gary Moore is way more than a blues' guitarist his back catalogue of music and the styles he can play is mind blowing from collosum 2, G Force, Greg lake, Scar's, BBM and Dark days in paradise, wild frontier and victims of the future albums to name a few 😎🤘
@@slappercast thanks 👍 that's one hell of a tricky question, but I would suggest firstly listen to Wild Frontier album ( The live in Stockholm 25th April 87 video is a real good display of his immense talent) also the album G Force and dark days in paradise 👍 I hope you enjoy these suggestions, they are my 3 favourites. If you like the your should also have a listen to back on the streets, corridors of power, victims of the future, run for cover, after the war, still got the blues, BBM, Scars, and A different beat. Enjoy!!! All the best 🤘😎x
The last US Tour came to my town at an intimate small venue in Cleveland Ohio called the Agora. Black Rose was the final encore for the evening. I stood, perhaps less than half a meter from Philip during the performance. It was the fifth time seeing Lizzy with Philip. You really had to see and hear them live to really understand this band.
30 years ago I would have said Sykes was best in the band but now that I know basically every song, Robo is my favorite. Maybe because it’s more my style of playing. Not too tame and not too heavy. Live N Dangerous is my favorite album by far! All players were great minus Snowflake 🤣. And yes, Black rose is a killer song and a bitch to play as well or I’ll say TRY to play🤣🤣🤣. Good stuff fellas, Keep rockin! Good seeing you guys in Austin around the Hollidays. ( Think Lizzy boys)❤
Love Robbo... just put off by the attitude and immaturity that cost them so many opportunities **My only gift is holding a grudge** Y'all SLAY Black Rose, btw
Thank you! I was about to explode listening to that guy going on and on about Sykes and Moore and not even mentioning Robbo. Sykes was awful in my opinion always sounding the same no matter what the song was. He just had to throw in that same screeching and screaming sound so subtlety and variation was not his thing Furthermore he arrived like two minutes before the band broke up and was only playing on their last album which - from what I’ve heard - was pretty much finished by then because Phillip kept hoping for Moore to come in. So Sykes' contribution to what was Thin Lizzy is so negligible the massive praise for him is entirely undeserved. Robbo was unsurpassed when he came in with his solos on e.g. Showdown, Cowboy Song and Suicide. There are no words for what Robbo could do. As for Robbo ruining opportunities… I don’t understand what he did that the other members of the band weren’t also doing. Getting drunk, stoned, high etc. and getting into fights was not unique to Robbo by any means.
Gary Moore went all John McLaughlin with Collusseum II in the 70s. The man could play anything. So to mark him as a blues player is not correct. Lynotts phrasing has more in common with Frank Sinatra and his crooner friends than his hard rock pals.
@@slappercast Thin Lizzy / Queen. Jan 25, 1977 Ottawa Civic Centre and then the next night in Montréal at the Forum. The Ottawa show was amazing and a friend dragged me to an after party that 10 CC were at too. Freddie blew through the room for 5 minutes with a hot girl on one arm and a hot boy on the other. Had so much fun then we hitched to Montréal with guest tickets and raved on! Phil was on fire in both shows.
I'm sorry but for me John Sykes was a metal guitarist/shredder. He may have fitted in on Thunder & Lightning because it was a metal album but he'd never have grasped what was needed on albums like Jailbreak, Johnny The Fox, Bad Reputation and Black Rose. He'd have ruined them because with John everything's done at full tilt. There's no light and shade. To not even mention Brian Robertson seems ridiculous. And it's no coincidence that the vast majority of Lizzy fans will tell you that their favourite guitarist line up would be not Scott and Gary Moore, or Scott and Snowy, and certainly not Scott and John Sykes, but Scott and Brian Robertson. That pairing was perfect for Thin Lizzy - hard edged but extremely melodic, subtle and pared back when necessary. Scott and Robbo complimented Phil's song writing and lyrics in a way no one else did - not even Gary Moore.
^. ^ You didn't even mention " Vagabonds of the Western world;" That is a work of genius! Then of course was Jailbreak.... Johnny the fox ...bad reputation Lizzy invented a totally original form of music called Celtic Rock. I saw them play in Edinburgh in 1979...... They were amazing!. Foxy love fae Scotland VVxx
Wow, cool! I’m so envious, I wish I could have seen them live. You’re absolutely right, too much to cover for one episode… I had intended to talk about “A Song For While I’m Away” from Vagabonds, but we’ll do this again for sure. Cheers and thanks for commenting

As good as Gary Moore and John Sykes were, the Robertson and Gorham combination was the best. Melodic, measured and with the right speed and volume. Even Gary Moore admitted that this duo produced the best Lizzy sound - magical he called it. The times that Moore joined Lizzy, his playing was a little too fast and aggressive and at times it jarred with the Lizzy sound. What can't be argued is that Robertson, Gorham, Moore, Bell, White and Sykes were probably the greatest collection of guitarists that have ever played for the same band.
Fair point, but even Jim Fitzpatrick has said that he believes an invitation to Live Aid would have provided Philo the motivation he needed to get clean.
Sure, but it might have got Phil back on his feet. Live aid saved the career of Queen - it might have done the same for Phil and Lizzy. Apparently he was backstage at Wembley during the live aid concert - what a waste not having him perform. One could only have imagined a 3-song set of Jailbreak, Cowboy Song and The Boys are Back in Town and how that would have blown the roof off the stadium.
Phil was in bad shape. Geldof didn’t want him up there in that kind of poor health. He probably didn’t want Phil to suffer the embarrassment. Better he didn’t play and then maybe got him to get clean. Playing was a high risk that Lizzy would have laid an egg.
Thin Lizzy ,my favorite band of all time.have been since 1977.
My favorite album by them: Johnny the Fox

Thin Lizzy should be in the Rockroll hall of fame.
Brian Robertson & Scott Gorham were an important part of the development of the Lizzy sound.
my fave band brian robertson best guitarst for lizzy style

Greg Fugate has a great 'Top 5' TL list... wonder if he'll post it
I’ve seen them with all the guitars players ,they had to give it up !
sykes and moore together in lizzy would have been a metal band not a hard rock band which made them the best
