  • The East by West Ferry got into difficulties this morning when while attempting to cross Wellington Harbour in a strong gale the front windows of the boat were smashed by a large wave and the Captain and a passenger were swept overboard. The water that came in through the front windows caused flooding in the passenger compartment and the catamarans hulls stopping the engines.
    The 44 passengers were rescued by the Worser Bay Surf Lifesavers and the boat was towed to a mooring in Worser Bay by the Police Boat.
    The grey boat seen is the Police boat after the rescue and at the end of the video the East by West Ferry limping back to the safety of Wellington Harbour after it engines were repaired.

    If the engine rooms were flooded she would have sunk ... best guess was that the skipper shut them down because of the emergency.
