- We meet local artist and barman Graham Vasey, who trots for some amazing grayling with his cane rod, centrepin reel and nothing more complicated than a worm. That is, when he's not pouring pints or taking evocative photographs of the Teesdale landscape. On the border between Yorkshire and Durham, the inspirational landscape of the Dales shifts with the varying weather, and all the while the River Tees tries her best to hold onto her secrets. But the skill of the angler ekes out some sizeable fish, and a massive surprise when a chunky wild brown trout gets greedy.
When he spoke of the transition from winter to spring, I absolutely love this time of year.
What a lovely film, taking the viewer right into the heart of the fishing. Graham is an absolute natural and the filming.. one of my favourites so far.
Beautiful little film. I really felt at home during the first day’s filming when the video really captured the gray and warm brown colours of the Pennies, the heavy rain clouds and fog as Graham mentioned. Can be a gloomy and moody place but it’s very special and magical. And so is its river fishing!
I learned to fish as a boy on the free stretch of the Tees at Cotherstone. Thanks for a lovely trip down memory lane. I now live in Cornwall and Fish much smaller rivers.
Beautifully paced piece and lovely music! Magic!
Sat outside on a lovely May evening watching this. Although I feel that May is the most beautiful month of all, this is such a lovely film, it actually makes me look forward to those clear winter days on the rivers!
Thanks for your kind words
Another insperational film, looking forward to getting out on the bank tomorrow, thank you for posting.

Great filming and music. What was the cup you were using, where can I get one from?
Cheers it’s a traditional Nordic cup called a Kuksa I’m not sure where mine was from exactly because it was bought for me as a gift but if you google them there are loads available
😬May I ask what rod and reel were used by the Graham as I am new to vintage fishing gear. Excellent story video.
Hi thank you so much. The rod is a Chapmans 11ft Amwell and the reel is a wide drum Allcocks Aerial, hope that’s some help
Looks like High Coniscliffe?
Lovely film. Which cane rod do you have there? A Dawson’s of Bromley?
It’s a 11ft Chapmans Amwell Steve with home made replacement top section 👍
